Great video Nick, Settle to Carlisle line is best experience on grim weather than Sunny Weather (But Sunny weather does have it's advantages) But speaking of Yorkshire I did mentioned in a video of mine at Bramley (Hampshire) that one day some KZbinrs will do a journey from Bramley in Yorkshire to Bramley in Hampshire.... So I'm putting that in as a suggestion lol

Kirkby Stephen station was designed by the Midland Railway company's Chief Architect John Holloway Sanders and opened in 1876. As the company architect, John Holloway Sanders designed many stations for them like Dent, Settle, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Ribblehead, Langwathby, Appleby, Creswell, Lazonby & Kirkoswald, Dore & Totley, and Shirebrook. And he also designed the Dandry Mire Viaduct! When the Settle & Carlisle Line was being built, the traversing of Dandry Mire was to have been by use of an embankment, but the bog swallowed all of the material poured into it, so a trench was dug instead, and the viaduct was constructed! The Ribblehead Viaduct on the other hand was designed by John Sydney Crossley. Kirkby station on Merseyrail was originally built in 1848, as part of the Liverpool and Bury Railway. This then became part of the main Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway route between Manchester Victoria and the former Liverpool Exchange. After the nationalization in 1948, the use of the line as a through Liverpool to Manchester route declined, however local commuter traffic levels remained significant. Despite this, it was still on the Beeching Axe, but thankfully its closure was rejected in December 1967. It joined the then newly created Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive's rail network in 1969. In 1977, the station's configuration was altered due to electrification and the closure of Liverpool Exchange.

You could’ve done a slightly different route back by going to Long Preston or Hellifield, then taking a train from there to Lancaster, and then heading down the WCML to Manchester on TPE. Granted it’s probably a much longer journey but offers variety. In fact if you timed it right you could get the Liverpool Lime St - Glasgow TPE service to Carlisle and then come down from there to Kirkby Stephen. As regards future point to point, I think an interesting one would be Dalston (in Cumbria - on the Cumbrian Coast Line) to Dalston Junction/Kingsland on the London Overground!

There used to be like a 2 or 3 minute wait in Newton-le-Willows because those Nova's are really speedy on Electric power and the timetable didn't cater for the speed difference... Yet despite the Nova's it still takes two hours from Liverpool to Leeds. The wait is done in Victoria now, it's to let the stopper service (using the old faithful 185s) from Piccadilly get far enough in front so it doesn't slow down the Nova's. Well that's if they don't get delayed or cancelled...
@bluechang0811 ай бұрын
Using the train should be quicker than going by car, but 2 hours on a train to do a journey you can do (station to station) in a car in under 1hr30 is stupid, and probably cheaper going by car too.

Super video as usual. You could actually have done two point to points in one video by going to Preston from Kirkby, then to Long Preston via Lancaster to join the Kirkby Stephen train. Perhaps the timetable might not have fitted in as well though as the trains across country from Lancaster (another beautiful but lesser known line) are not as frequent. I suspect that there will be other possible double point to points that are doable if you really want to challenge yourself!

Kirkby was founded around 870 AD according to Bronze Age evidence. Kirk-by derives from the Northern dialect of Old English word Kirk ('church') and by (settlement or village; cognate with Old Norse byr). Kirkby once had ROF Kirkby, a Royal Ordnance Factory, which was established in 1939 and produced munitions from 1940 to 1946. At its peak, the factory employed over 20,000 workers. There were two explosions at Kirkby ROF, one in February 1944 and one in September 1944. It took three months of work to clear 4,000 bombs which were buried in the rubble after the second accident, with a total of 37 awards for bravery and distinguished conduct made by King George VI. Kirkby station has been the site of many accidents. In June 1857, a goods train collided with an excursion train stopped at Kirkby. The goods train passed a signal at danger protecting the stationary passenger train, overrunning it by 238 yards (218 meters). More than 200 people were injured, some of them severely. The driver and guard of the goods train were found to be at fault for the incident, having not reacted to an adverse signal in a timely fashion despite clear weather and good visibility. In March 2021, a train overshot the platform and overran the former buffer stop and 12 people had minor injuries. And investigation concluded the driver was on their phone.

Can I suggest "Point to Point" from University to University? I remember this coming up as a question in the "minimum number of changes" round of the annual Oxford v Cambridge railway quiz, about 30 years ago... Only the change since then is that now there are *three* stations in the UK called "University": the obvious one in Birmingham; the one on Northern Ireland Railways; and the newer one on the Tyne and Wear Metro. So you could do a point to point to point episode...

Kirkby Stephen East is a restored Station forming part of 'The Stainmore Railway' ... you'll have to go back 😮 May be to add to your challenge go via Carlisle, then south via the Kirkby Stephen Stations, on to leeds and to Nottinghamshire for Kirkby in Ashfield on the Robin hood line, with 2 options, Sheffield and worksop, or to Nottingham and back out. Do the whole and return to home without travelling on the same rails twice?

I enjoyed the video. Here's an idea: Kirkby to Wigan Wallgate. Wigan NW to Lancaster. Lancaster to Long Preston. Long Preston to Kirkby Stephen. Or to avoid a walk between the two Wigan stations: Kirkby to Sandhills. Sandhills to Ormskirk. Ormskirk to Preston. Preston to Lancaster. Then as before. Both far quicker than going via Leeds City. Which leads me to an idea. A race between between you and someone else - an added dimesion would be to both roll a dice to determine that minimum number of different train companies used. Eg. Start at Lime Street, roll the dice and the first to Swansea wins - Loser pays for both journeys.
