The difference between this story and the Titanic is that the Titanic's captain and the senior officers loaded and lowered the lifeboats knowing that there weren't enough for everybody and that they were probably all going to drown. Only 2 of the senior officers survived, 1 was ordered into a lifeboat with very little crew in it, and the other managed to swim to a boat after the rest were lowered.

The captain was protected by his company (Epirotiki) and wasn't given a punishment from what I can find. He's most likely retired now, but looks like he got away with it.

It was actually all the high-level staff oddly enough, the stewards and other low-level crew were left to die by the officers. The captain was dragged onto the ship before he could leave by the staff and later pushed a passenger aside and forced the South African diver to haul him into the helicopter.

The Oceanos was saved by two performers, not one guy. Also, the hull's plating didn't give in. The Oceanos was being rented by another company which didn't take good care of the ship. Passengers were surprised by the rust and grime on the ship when they were boarding, and the ship's water pumping system had recently been "repaired." The repairmen did a bad job repairing the pump. Eventually, from the waves hitting the ship, the pump broke and water filled the engine room very slowly. The engines were running when they short-circuited and exploding, plunging the ship into darkness. The crew all prepared lifeboats and boarded, leaving the passengers on the ship to save themselves. The captain was pulled back on board by the performers, staying on the ship until rescue arrived. No lives were lost, and the whole thing was caught on video.
