Having owned outstanding horses for almost 40 years, most of them homebreds, Louisville's Klein family raced its first millionaire and winner of a million-dollar stakes when the Kentucky-bred Brilliant Berti captured Kentucky Downs' $1.5 million Gun Runner Stakes on Sept. 8. Brilliant Berti, named for the late family patriarch Bert Klein, represents four generations of Klein family breeding. After the race, we spoke with Richard Klein, who was considering getting out of the business until his daughter, equine surgeon Chelsea Klein, and son Casey Klein, chief of staff for Belladonna Racing and Ingordo Bloodstock, got into horse racing.
