I’m here after a recent power outage due to the heavy rains and high winds in Northern California. I had SOME emergency lighting but this gave me additional ideas to be even MORE prepared and comfortable next time. An interesting video would be what lights you used, where and how during a power loss. I found myself moving from one room to the next and forgetting my flashlight or lantern and having to backtrack in the dark. I wasn’t in the habit of having to carry my light with me rather than flip a switch! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS EXCELLENT INFORMATION! I took notes and look forward to purchasing more light to help during a power outage.

Headlamps are great for hands-free lighting when you have to perform a task during a power outage, but for use indoors and around other people you will want a headlamp that is not too intensely bright otherwise it is blinding for other people when you look at them which of course would aim that light at their eyes. For a nightlight in a windowless bathroom, one of those jar candles set inside a metal or glass bowl half-filled with water and the bowl placed in the center of an empty bathtub or on the floor of a shower (shower curtain looped over the shower rod and well away from the candle) makes a relatively safe and inexpensive nightlight that may even extinguish itself if there is a strong aftershock following an earthquake. I found this method useful for two days without power following an earthquake when living in a neighborhood that did not have natural gas pipelines. If there are toddlers or over-active pets around, small solar-charged lanterns work well for lighting bathrooms at night, but it helps to have more than one of these lanterns so another fully charged lantern can replace the first one when if loses its charge before sunrise. It is also helpful to have some type of safe lighting to sit beside the top and bottom steps of staircases rather than just relying upon some kind of handheld light or headlight because the last thing you want is for someone to fall down the stairs in the dark.

I love my candles. When used safely with common sense and forethought candles are a great asset. For Kylene, one of candles' best features is that they will store safely, forever, with no expiration or best by dates. Even those slumpy ones that we all have that were accidently stored in the too hot attic, can easily be remade to be usefull again. Be warry of candles with seemingly ridiculous stated burn times because frequently that means that the flame is so small as to be virtually pointless. I found the dollar store type Jesus candles to be one of the worst offenders, beside that they are too tall and narrow making them easily knocked over.

I'm glad that you talked about the 100 hour candles. I have them and I wasn't sure about how much light they made.

Did you mention oil lamps or did I just them? Ole Abe used them to study law. Being an open flame method of lightning you may not like them but they can be very safe and they can be left out on display for decor so there is no searching for them. It is good to keep a book or small box of matches immediately behind the oil lamp. Also in emergency supplies one may want to keep extra mantles, matches, or Bic type lighter in a box and store it in a shed or garage outside. I realize this video was designated for lighting purposes but anytime there are flames inside a fire extinguisher are a must. My dad was a firefighter and I a property insurance adjuster. We each saw many means of the origins of fires. Liquid refueling should be done outside. I enjoy information and presentation of your videos.

Yes, I was surprised that you didn't mention regular lamp oil, which IS intended for indoor use. I have multiple glass oil lamps, which are good for task lighting, have a globe to keep the flame from being blown out, and when combined in multiples of more than one, give off a surprising amount of light.

Wow. I am so embarrassed. Unless it would be written on our lamp oil bottles, only doing liquid refueling outdoors would have never occurred to me. 🤦‍♀️😬 Thank you for sharing that. I will add a note to our light kit and also teach my boys to know/remember that as well.

I keep and number of small flashlights, most the cheapy ones from China, up to a Mini-MagLite, but my main light is a full size wall mounted commercial emergency light that gives me about 3 hours of good lighting. So it and two small plug in emergency lights come on by themselves when the power goes out. And for extra safety, I put night-glow tape on stuff like door frames, fans and anything else that gets moved or is a trip hazard.

I had gotten my mom a power failure light, and every time she uses it as a flashlight I have to remind her to not switch it off before plugging back in, otherwise it won't light up automatically when the power goes out. When I was young it seemed like MagLites were the most coveted flashlights, now it seems like they aren't really talked about anymore since flashlight quality has improved so much over the years. I have a hand-crank lantern, and what's worse than it being tedious to crank is that the rubber housing has become old and gummy and gets my hands sticky every time I use it. Because my dad grew up so rural, he saw no problem using a kerosene heater to heat his apartment, he preferred the more "natural" heat they gave off compared to the baseboard heaters. It took lots of chastising (warning about the carbon monoxide and fire risks, along with how it made him and everything in his place smell like diesel) to finally convince him to stop that practice.

I have always kept flash lights and candles around for emergencies. Over the last few years I have been replacing my old incandescent bulbed lights with LEDs, simply more light for the juice. More recently anything new I get must have a solar charging option. I really like the outdoor lights in a bucket arrangement, very convenient for carrying in and out.

Those 100 hour candles can be refilled with lamp oil using a larger bore syringe through a really small hole drilled and then metal-taped shut at the "collar" of the reservoir. Of course the wicks don't last forever, but I've gotten 75 or so more additional hours out of one and have used it to heat my traditional oven to raise bread in, when the power was out so the oven light wasn't working. Keeping the oven door cracked helps too.

My collection of railroad lanterns took great care of me through many New England storms when power went out. Very rare to also lose the phone. Living across the pond I have had to make a few changes. I wrote a new trade plan to allowed for adjustments before the Friday expiration and closing positions early when a storm is predicted to hit our area of the Philippines. Still, I like to capture all the time value in short options that I can so I am guilty of sometimes cutting things close to the wire. My bride on the other hand, often has orders due that she must send in by a deadline. Maria is an academic writer, working for several companies and clients around the world. Writers get very heavy penalties for work not completed and sent or sent in past a deadline! Our short term solution is to use either a "pocket WiFi" devise or she will create a "hot-spot"with her cellphone. If additional time beyond what the devises batteries offer is needed to finish/send a project, we have small inverters made by Tripp Lite that will power a laptop from a cars charging system. This is also a mobile solution for travel BTW. The phone company sales rep never mentioned that when the power goes out, you lose phone service with the phone that is connected to the fiber-optic box. That little fact prevents me from calling my broker to make "broker assisted " trades for me. This was not the case with the land-line-DSL combination. You must provide power to the fiber box or you lose both your internet service as well as the telephone. When work is completed and sent and any trades needing attention are set, we enjoy the peace and quiet of a night with no streetlights! A few small LED devises are all we need, We only haul out and test our "large scale " emergency lights but really have never needed to actually put them into service.

At this point, all of my lanterns and lights have built in Lion batteries and are USB rechargeable. This lets me charge them with my phone charger from a wall outlet ( Not much use when the power is out) and also from my car. I also have a 100 watt solar panel and battery for a long term source of power to keep the lanterns and lights charged.

Asking with those small yard solar lights, there are some really good solar flood lights, adjustable spot lights, and now you see other solar lighting for the sides of buildings. All are great options for light with it needing batteries, and can be charged each day.

Thanks for this video. We do have a collapsible camping lantern that uses 3 AA batteries. But coming up with a plan is next on our list. We have seen some LED lights that automatically light up when the power goes out. But we love a solar option also.

When my children were younger. I would buy them glow sticks from the Dollar store. You would pay a dollar and get 16 of them in a package. I just went to the dollar store two days ago and I purchased 6 packages of glow sticks. That is not our only light source we have . I was at our local grocery store last week and I noticed a box of candles on the clearance shelf . The box has 72 candles in it each candle burns for approximately 3 hours. The price of the box was 3 dollars.. I just wanted to share that with everyone.

One question I just thought of. Would oil lamps be a good option. We do have a couple. Would that be a high soot and therefore a lot of CO?

You can also use the solar spot lights that go in the yard that usually come in a three-pack with one solar panel. If you purchase a toggle switch you can actually control electricity when you want to turn it off and on as long as the sun is down because those solar panels have a sensor that will not turn on until it's dark. I created a video showing what I did and how to do it if you want to have light in an outbuilding barn or whatever or you could use it in your house in a grid down situation. Feel free to check out the video here's the link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWqvaoqlbrp8rbs
