I have installed both a 30A and a 50A Smart Plug on my RVs. The 30A went on a Coachmen 22' travel trailer, and the 50A Smart Plug went on my new Alliance Avenue 32RLS fifth wheel. Installation was straightforward, easy, and quick. Highly recommend. Great product. Suggestion: Do some shopping because you may find a better price. Thanks for the video. Lou from Georgia.

I like it not so much for the safety issues but for the ease of use. He is right about the night time use and the older hands (men and women). But my concern would be if something happened to your cord i.e. damaged, stolen, whatever, how hard would it be to replace it without having to order it online. Chances of you finding it in Walmart or a mom and pop RV store is slim until it’s gains more traction in the industry.

Speaking from personal experience, I would DEFINITELY recommend changing to something like this! A couple years back, I had my 30A twistlock cable short out in the middle of the night. It actually melted my cable completely in half. I have no idea how it didn't burn my trailer to the ground! I will definitely be converting my new trailer to this set-up when I purchase it in a few months.

The biggest cause of connector issues is using an external surge protector. The trailer cord is constantly being connected and disconnected from the surge protector which weakens the terminals within the connector. The connection is also not protected from the weather by the pedestal cover. You should be advocating hard-wired surge protectors as well as a better cable connection.

If you know how electricity works regarding resistance, even at an amateur level, you will understand that this plug is a good buy. The old rv/marine plugs just aren’t smart. Smartplug is smart. I’m installing this on my RV when I get the electrical re-done (in a month or so). If you’ve ever had your plug melted on your RV, you should automatically replace it with this. They have kits where you can keep your old RV cord and convert it. And from what I’ve seen, it will usually go back in the same hole where your original plug came out of.
@YallAintRight Жыл бұрын
For the record, I’m an amateur. I took the NRVTA RV owner’s class. I learned so much about electricity and resistance and now I understand why it’s incredibly important that you don’t have corrosion on your plugs and everything has a good connection.

I had an Open Range 5th wheel and it was equipped with a Furrion twist lock. One of our forum members pointed out that very problem the VP pointed out, they do not have adequate pin engagement. His Open Range had burned one of the connectors and he also knew of others that the same thing had happened . The smart plug was around then and several folks installed it, I however did not want to spend the big money they were asking for their product. There are other plugs out there that plug straight in and are much less expensive. They do not have that 3 way locking mechanism however.

This is great. But does it then require a proprietary brand extension cable if you run into a situation where it's not long enough to make it to the shore power pedestal at the campsite ? And how secure are the splice points at the back of the plug ends ? By splicing, are you are creating a possible water intrusion point ?
@mikes79 Жыл бұрын
This product only changes the plug and cord end that attaches to the RV. The plug end that goes to the power pedestal (or extension cord) does not change - it remains the industry standard plug.

One major point that I think you guys missed. All of the things you said are correct and give peace of mind. But I bought that thing simply to get rid of the plastic nut that you have to thread on. I’ve cross threaded that thing so many times, and it pisses me off. With this plug it’s a simple plug and play
@evanmartin7809 Жыл бұрын
not a bad design. I will say that the pedestal end of the connection is by far the more common point of failure. The plugs are more prone to getting dirty and corroded, and the campground outlets are often old, dirty and worn out. One of the best upgrades you can do is a 90 degree twist lock cord. Smart Plug should do the same thing. Some manufacturers provide these from the factory, and I don't understand why everyone doesn't. Most times I don't even bother to screw the collar on, because the weight of the cord is holding the twist lock in place. 30A plugs are also much more susceptible to damage than a 50A, because you are running at full rated current much more often. Unless you have a toy hauler with 3ACs, the chance of pulling 50A on either leg for more than a couple minutes is pretty low.

The part that goes into your RV is the smartplug part. The part that goes into the pedestal is the usual pedestal plug shape. That shape will work with your surge protector.

@@YallAintRight makes sense. So that end is still the classic 30 or 50 amp plug that can still sometimes work it's way out.
@YallAintRight Жыл бұрын
@@REL3712 Yes, it’s the usual end. 👍🏻That’s why you can use your old RV cord but cut off the end that attaches to the RV and put on the smart plug attachment. If yours is coming loose on that, maybe you should replace that end as well. I’m not an electrician so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

@YallAintRight Жыл бұрын
@@REL3712 I’m totally impressed to be honest with you. Thank you for your service and I’m kind of jealous of all your knowledge. I’m always careful when I talk about electrical stuff online because I’m not qualified to give advice. I’m a complete newbie when it comes to this stuff. When I looked into it, you have a lot more contact with the smartplug than with the old kind and it’s designed so it’s much less likely to have an issue. If I had an RV with a burnt out plug, I would replace it with this. My RV, which I’m going to buy this plug for comes from Japan so I need to replace it anyway. I spoke with a friend and she’s had the traditional plug on her RV go bad two or three times. At that point, it would be cheaper to replace it with a Smartplug. I don’t know of a single case where the Smartplug had a problem. I’m not affiliated and I have way less knowledge than you, so please check it out. I would actually love to hear your opinion of it.

I have an Airstream that uses a 50 Amp Smart Plug, biggest complaint is this company needs to make more adapters. If you want to use a 30 Amp cable (cuz its lighter) there no adapters you can buy. You have to use this heavy 50 Amp cable to simply plug into a portable generator. They show the CM50043 but I've been waiting for over a year to try to get one of these.

Love this product, except for the cost. I really wish the boat and RV industries would switch to this. I did it on my boat after having my connection start to burn/melt a little, plus my shore power connection was in an inconvenient location and this is much easier to plug in. For the RV, it s a little costly for a consumer upgrade, unless you already need to replace something that has failed.
