You really do take the cake for producing new and interesting collections, Brilliant Classics. Thank you for this one. I like Dvorak's music but am ashamed to admit I am pretty ignorant of its range and variety. This introduction to his concerti was heaven-sent. The three works blew me away. I felt his writing for the two stringed instruments, particularly the cello, was more positive overall than the piano concerto.

I would not call the Piano Concerto " tentative but beautifully peaceful". It is beautiful, and beautifully peaceful in the slow movement and moments of repose, but tentative ? It is a true masterpiece, full of blazing conviction, the demands on the soloist as high as in any mainstream concerto. It should be programmed as frequently as the concertos of Schumann, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, and Grieg. It is no less a mature masterpiece than Dvorak's other two concertos.

It's more tentative than beautiful.

I like all three movements. It's interesting... you may hear the details of melodies at the beginning around 2:30 is the melody that reminds the Russian folk song Kalinka, composed in 1860...but it's like he is celebrating the folk songs....As David Hurwitz said around 5:00 minute is the melody that reminds Mozart´s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik... He admired other composers, but of course. there are other melodies that he created by himself. If you pay attention, you like the concerto more. He often cited Beethoven to his students but admired many composers. He became friends with Brahms and Tchaikovsky. Sometimes he was inspired by traditional music and sometimes he was inspired by folk music etc.

@@Chorizo727 If it's played in a tenacious way... Listen to Firkusný version, his playing is very elegant thoughtful. David Hurwitz said that doing this piano concerto well, both the pianist and orchestra must be on the same page. Firkušný did it best. If you don't understand it's on the pianist to make the piece sound elegant and beautiful. It's about the interpretation. There is also a new video by some Russian pianist. He did it well too.
