In one of the most eyecatching policy reveals ever, the Prime Minister has pledged to introduce a new mandatory form of national service for all 18-year-olds if he wins the next election.
Teens will have to choose between a year in the military or volunteering for organisations such as the police and fire service.

The government hopes it will give youngsters 'life-changing opportunities' to learn 'real-world skills'.

This is just a way of using our youth for cheap labour, rather than tackling innequality. Fully franchise our youth, by making social mobility possible again, free Higher education,affordable homes, good pay and conditions. Stop squeezing the young, and start investing in them. With those conditions in place, asking for voluntary service is fair. In fact, all retired people too could volunteer,if they wish and are healthy enough.

I work for the Fire Brigade and there's no way we have the resources to babysit thousands of reluctant teenagers every weekend. Even those who are enthusiastic couldn't be taught anything meaningful on a once-per-month basis. These are technically complex jobs that require of months of intensive training before any genuine sense of competence is achieved.

The last people who had to do any form of forced national service are in their 70's. As such, if this is a policy people support, like Albie and the caller Charlotte, I would expect they would have no complaints if the policy extended to them as well. Make it mandatory for everyone under 70 who hasn't done any elective service during their lifetime. One of the British Values that everyone keeps harpering on about is sense of fairplay - so let's make it expand to everyone. It is their civic duty, after all. I wonder how popular the policy would be then, hm?

National Service enrolment finished in 1960, if you were 18 in 1960 you'd be 82 now, and only men were included and not all men., so very few people around today would've done it.

Alive seems to have had a logic bypass, an 18 year old is going to be no use to the fire service one weekend a month or the NHS, these services are paired to the bone, they won't have time to do anything useful with them. The idea they could contribute with cyber security is risible better do a degree first. The military today is quite different from the military in 1945, this policy invented the day before is just to grab headlines, it's not at all thought through even Steve Baker came out against it. Other countries like Sweden have embedded this system over years, they didn't invent it one day and implement the next.

I don't know if this has been answered or can be answered but what will happen if any one or many simply tell them to frig off and refuse to volunteer? They've already said that no criminal sanctions will be imposed so that will leave civil proceedings to attempt to impose and then collect a fine which will cost far more than anything (if anything at all actually is collected). I am Swiss. In Switzerland, we have compulsory military training, and you do it for a few weeks every year until retirement age. It is not very popular, and then they also have special provision for conscientous objectors. Yes...not many people know that neutral Switzerland, like neutral Sweden have an army, which is a defence militia. I am neither defending nor attacking this system (many years ago, when voted to keep this system or abolish it, I voted to abolish it. It was a very close call, so the ministery changed the organisation in order to defuse hostility and created the conscientious objector provision). I am stating a fact.

Teaching life skills, isn't that what school is supposed to do? In regards to the Duke of Edinburgh Award, has anyone considered the effect national service will have on it. Why would anyone pay £28 - £35 to do the voluntary sections knowing they will have to do it anyway when they are 18 and it will not cost anything. You then have to think about all those who make a living from the scheme especially on the Gold award when participants spend a week away from home doing a chosen activity, the leaders of many of these activities are veterans. Just think how many of those jobs would be lost again kicking our former military in the teeth.

i am austrian and we do have such a system. back then it was 8 month military or 12 month civil service. this is highly controversal here as well but we have this system since ww2. 25 in civil service doesn't help anyone. I was working as a first responder. Even the training to do the easy stuff took 4 weeks. university in austria is free - i think this is a valid point of marina.
