Torrence’s mom was actually referencing a real true crime case in the beginning of the movie! A mother, named Wanda Holloway, hired a hitman to kill a teenage girl’s mom. The girl was on the cheer squad, and Wanda believed she would be distraught over her mom and quit the squad. Then, there would be an open space for her daughter. This happened in Channelview, Texas, in 1991 😄 (Edited for accuracy, thanks for the comment from @CMO for reminding me of the full case! 😊)

I think this movie was one of the first instances I ever had with gay representation. I was only 9 when it came out but I was OBSESSED with it lol. Everyone in my elementary school would quote it constantly and I knew the beginning cheer by heart. Back then any representation that was even remotely positive was huge so I give this movie major props for that little moment.

9:28 for all years I was in university (and a few years before that), our basketball team was barely winning games. Meanwhile the cheerleading squad were champions and VERY popular. The cheerleading competitions were always sold out, while most of the patrons for the basketball games were old-time fans and alumni who have seen the team in their heyday. The half-time performances of the cheerleading squad became a selling point to encourage attendance for a younger audience. It was a spectacle. Nowadays, it's the opposite. The basketball team won the championship last year, while the cheerleading squad is hot garbage.

8:43 It's when one person kills someone 1-10 minutes before killing themselves. Like a suicide pact except that only one person does any of the actual killing. Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria did it with his mistress - we know that because when they forced the door down she was on the bed with her hair strewn over the pillows, a flower in her hands and a bullet hole in her head, and he was sitting in a chair next to the bed with a glass that still smelt like cognac next to him still holding the gun in his hand with another bullet hole in his head. Both bullets were found. His cousin Franz Ferdinand became the next heir to the Austrian Empire and we all know how THAT turned out.

I was a cheerleader in middle school and did different types of dance growing up and this movie was popular with all cheerleaders. I did actually have a similar fall to the girl towards the beginning, but I messed up my right shoulder and was caught just as I hit the ground so it could have been much worse. I always wonder what my life would have been like if I stayed with dancing and cheerleading into high school. W didn't have sports so our big thing was the marching band and I was in the choir which was varsity and always scored very highly at competitions. My university's football team has gotten better over the years but this was our story with the cheer and dance teams being national champions and the football team being absolute trash. I remember the worst game we lost 42-7... oof
