The Broadway version came out in 2002, which of course, gave us this musical version of 'Hairspray'.

Favorite part of this is the entire ending from when Tracy comes in for the final danceoff. It is a non stop slow build from then on. And it just doesn't stop. Just when you think they're going to call it, they key change, bring in 20 more people and make it bigger. It's incredibly empowering because everyone just keeps finally being themselves and not caring any more. Link dancing with Ines is such an awesome moment. So much talent in this. But several of them went well above and beyond. Marsden sells it and then keeps going. Travolta went all in on his role. Amanda Bynes... damnit I miss her. She was so good. Efron... he's turned out to be a pretty solid actor, who can legitimately sing pretty damn good. Marsden has the greatest facial expressions. And he just nailed it in Enchanted as well. His eye roll at Amber dancing. And how quickly he just adapts to changing times willingly and happily. He doesn't care who dances when and where... he just wants to make his show.

Unfortunately the hair height thing is still in effect, but it’s mostly for people with naturally curly hair. And their emphasis on Afro hair🙄 Other than that love the video

Yesss! I'm so happy more people are reacting to this musical! Even with how 'old' it is, the message is still super needed and relevant today. My favourite part is probably the moment Tracy goes into detention the first time. Getting that funkalisious music and dance with the black kids is just so great
@frederickseltzerjr2170 Жыл бұрын
I was born and raised in Baltimore, so I remember very well when the 1988 original "Hairspray!" was released. The "flasher" in the opening number is John Walters, the guy who wrote and directed the original (which discovered a then unknown Rikki Lake as the original Tracy Turnblad), plus it was based on a real dance show broadcasted in the 1960s in Baltimore known as "The Buddy Deane Show." So this brings back a LOT of memories for my childhood, including Travolta's dead-on Baltimore accent.
@Inucat93 жыл бұрын
Well it’s still an era where hair height is policed. When I used to wear my hair naturally I couldn’t have it be too poofy so other kids could see. So moreso black women are usually the ones who are affected by it now.

When you said "Imagine going from Grease to this", it occurred to me it's also kind of a merging of Grease 1 and 2 with both John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer together in it. I also read that they called "You Can't Stop the Beat" "You Can't Stop to Breathe" because it's so hard to sing and do the choreography with so many words in the song, and that made me wonder how much harder it was for John Travolta to sing in that suit. OMG! I never noticed before, but in that shot of the agents, was the woman agent the original Tracy, Ricki Lake? Or am I just imagining it? I Googled it and it WAS! My favorite movie musicals are technically not traditional musicals even though they were usually found in the musical section of video stores; Fame, Flashdance, and Footloose! Though they did eventually come out with Broadway musicals of Fame and Footloose (not sure about Flashdance). But Grease and this one are definitely favorites too. I was in high school when Grease came out and I really identified with wanting to remake yourself into a cool kid to fit in. Not the best moral to a story, but fun. Also maybe the movie version of A Chorus Line if only for the song "What I Did for Love". And just about any Disney musical, but especially the modern ones, Lion King, Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Hercules, Frozen, and Tangled (I haven't got around to seeing the more recent ones like Moana). Oh, and Rent if only for "Seasons of Love", Dear Evan Hansen, and the Greatest Showman; songs from those musicals really get me in the heart.

I saw this movie a long time ago and liked it but apparently I forgot about 90% of it. (I had no idea Zac Efron was in it?) This was a great refresher and so now I feel like I should watch it again! The biggest thing I remember is that it takes place in Baltimore, Maryland. Gonna give you 2 musicals I love. 1 - "Into the Woods". Not the 2014 movie but the filmed stage version with Bernadette Petters (1987 or 1988). Great show. The DVD came out in 1991, but you can find it on KZbin. 2 - "The Slipper and the Rose" 1977. It's a Cinderella story, but it's more focused on the prince (Richard Chamberlain) who is being pressured to marry for the sake of the kingdom, not for love. Great movie, wonderful music. I really hope you react to it. So underrated.
