idk y I’m commenting on this all these years later but I was talking to a friend about how I direct the videos for our band & this was the first one i ever did. It was 2 days after I relapsed and very emotional. On Forest’s first take i cried. As we were trying to write amo, I refused at first to write about anything to do with my marriage/divorce. It had been a few months & I was happy to be out of a relationship I realised was very toxic. So I felt like writing about it was very insincere as I believed I was in a good place. What I hadn’t realised is I hadn’t processed what had happened, I hadn’t dealt with the trauma of finding out the person you loved had chosen someone else over you. I hadn’t accepted my part, I hadn’t processed anything. I just ran. & because of this I couldn’t create real, honest, passionate music. I was stuck in a limbo. & my band could only stand and watch as I was trapped in this place. They knew I needed to process the events & write about them. This video is inspired by my journey to the realisation that feelings need to be felt. You can’t run away from trauma you can only work through it. Taking that idea this is a story set in a world in a very bleak situation. The ecosystem has collapsed, most of the planets creatures are extinct, and forest is a scientist that holds the key to salvation. But his refusal to process his grief has pretty much wiped his memory and left him empty. I always wanted the details to be interpreted by you guys but I do want to tell you one thing.. listen to the very end of the video… with headphones. I may do this for every video if anyone interacts hehe Love oli xx

❤️Yes Sir, you got that absolutely right! Song is a banger for sure, or as Oli said - "a bop" Truth be told, I didn't even "hear" this song, even though I'd listened many times, I just never "got it". Then I saw that video someone posted of BMTH doing this live at what looked like a smaller venue, more relaxed with no props, lights or confetti. I noticed the cool rhythm and tge song's "aura" hit me. And hard. The way Oli sang and moved, really got to me, I'd never seen him like that, it waa fascinating. Just add rhythm & blues, jazz, and soul to BMTH's musical madness! ❤️ Hell, I'm all for the mingling of genres and fans🤘

Just gone through the whole thing of fans hating on this album and these kinda songs and I absolutely gotta agree on this. Fans can be incredibly narrow-minded and will deem everything that seems a bit more "mainstream" as "sell-out". I mean let's be honest. Bands and the music industry have always been having financial success to some extent. Why would it be different here. No band would produce high quality albums if it wasn't for them being able to put their full-time into it. I barely have time to play the guitar besides my job, I wouldn't create and produce multiple full albums. But looking at bands like BMTH... Managing to walk that fine line between evolving and appealing to more people/seeing what works and still staying true to yourself and doing what feels right to you is something not a lot of artists manage to do and I feel they do it pretty well

For those asking about the meaning…Sykes explained to NME that the visual is "meant to be a representation of the grieving process. It's a visual metaphor for what the song is talking about." Sykes added: "Forest is the protagonist and a lot of people are counting on him to be able to recall these memories and process them. The spectrum of his emotions is impacting on all of these different experiments. I wanted it to have a message for what's going on in the world right now."

Okay so from the comments and studying the video and listening to this a million times because it's awesome I think that: Forest had a wife and child. Forest was driving his daughter when they were in an accident which left his lower body paralyzed and killed his daughter. After the accident Forest's wife likely blamed him for their daughter's death and cheated on him with the man we see in the video over and over depicted with flames / menacing look. She left him which broke him to the point where (in whatever future we are in) it was necessary to try extreme mind altering experiments in an attempt to bring him back from the edge. Most of the video we see of him is a simulation where he's being forced to confront and visualize the memories and thoughts that are haunting him. He's eventually able to stand up in the simulation which is impossible for him in the real world, but symbolizes that he's ready to move on and overcome the tragedy he's endured. That's my guess anyway.

I don’t if the band will see this comment, or anyone will read this comment, but this music video and song made me realize that recovery from grief is possible. In 2018 my ex boyfriend died from a car accident, he was only 23. Then in September my mom died from her drug addiction, then in November 2019 my sister’s dad who wanted to marry my mom when she was sober and paid for her to get recovery to get sober, died unexpectedly. I dropped out of college to help my grandma raise my ten and eleven year old siblings. Everyday I cry, but now I can start to look on the bright side. I just need a little faith.

Since in the dark was released, I have interpreted the lyrics of this song as a message to Hannah and her supposed cheating on Oli. This was even clearer in my head with this video, looks like if it refers to someone in a "brainwashing machine" reviewing several times something extremely painful (in this case, the betrayal, actually is looks like some scenes refer to it), although with some moments of joy (represented by the fireworks - "trying to figure out somehow, nothing of this is real, no") and trying to erase it from its mind. The message of this video is very deep and can be interpreted in many ways. BMTH never disappoints.

What an actually banger video. The visual metaphors in this are super strong and leave room for interpretation. My boi Forrest over here is a man about to die, reliving his life. The “electric chair” made of Xmas lights is a pretty safe assumption as a metaphor. The wires run from his head to a shattered, faulty screen in front of him, representing his memories being lived out in front of him. He’s being confronted by the relationships he had with the major women in his life, all forced into one fever dream of a moment. It’s also represented by the faceless women behind the screen, their silhouette forcing them to look like a grotesque amalgam of multiple people, wouldn’t you agree? The men we see throughout the video are younger versions of himself. We see two versions. A young, sinisterly lit man sneers back at him. I believe that at this time in his life, he had his daughter, the little girl we see, who’s snatched up by a shadowy monster. We also see what could be interpreted as a slightly older version of her, with glitch effects and similar lighting to him as a young man. He looks at himself in horror and disgust. He was a terrible father, alienated his daughter who ended up just like himself, the way he never wanted her to be. We see an middle aged version of himself, wiser. He sits in a evenly lit room, focused on a pedestal with flora sprouting gradually from it, powered by his body. He’s more focused now, intent on improving his life. The woman who could be his wife, holding a sparkler brings light to the dark of his life. As the timeline progresses, they’re seen watching fireworks, then finally she is then silhouetted against bright light on the beach she was seen at with the sparkler. A fully grown tree now grows from the pedestal. However we see intercut footage of a rainy car ride and a woman floating in a tank, connected with what seems like life support. This leads me to believe they got into a car collision, and he loses her. The woman in the tanks sinks into blood-red water, he closes his eyes, almost recoiling in pain at the memory. he is now faced with the regret of feeling like he failed the two people most important to him. The silhouettes behind the screen scream in agony, and so does he. The screen glitches and distorts, the tree is on fire and the printer that’s been running throughout the video starts printing in negative colour. The woman in the tank disappears, leaving bloody water behind. He is dying. He gets up, starts walking towards the screen, almost as if just touching it would allow him to relive those moments and make amends. Even just to apologise. The glitches start becoming more frequent as he walks towards the screen, he sees himself. His life has now fully caught up with him. The onlookers stare in awe and amazement as he gets closer to the screen, but it all comes caving in as the lyrics say. He sits in the chair once again, the screen is now blank, and the camera focuses in on his face. There’s a look of hopelessness in his eyes. As the last remnants of memory escape him, a hand reaches out to his shoulder as if to tell him that it’s time to go. There’s no more left to see, he now moves on to the afterlife. At least that’s what I got out of it. It’s all subjective, so I’m sure everyone gets something different out of it. And hey, if you read this whole thing, I hope you enjoyed my ramblings :)

Rio can you tell me the exact word spelled in English? If so then maybe I can help you understand it. Although in American music even if you know the meaning of the word as defined it can hold many more meanings depending on the persons interpretation. So even if I can give you a definition of the word it won’t mean that it is what the director meant. That will be left for you to decide. It’s the beauty of music.
@rio20394 жыл бұрын
Crystal Litchfield Thank you for your comment. I understand what you say. And I apologize my poor English. I meant "アーク" and "ark" have the same pronunciation. @crystallitchfield46394 жыл бұрын
Rio ok so maybe the word “ ark” in your language is the same as dark in ours. In other words meaning black, the absence of all color or all the color being combined. In any sense of the actual word means nothing. It’s your own to decide. Much love and happiness.

Never ever get sick of this amazing music video!!.. Honestly it makes me think about when I finally get up the courage and visit my old hometown and go to my neighborhood where my childhood home resides. That little house scares me more than anything..

Beautifully done from the attention to detail, hidden messages in each scene, how the video relates to the song (Some artists don’t do that), and the endless metaphors!

Agreed. Im more of a Sempiternal and earlier fan but they’ve made a few bangers since then I’ve really enjoyed. This is one of them.

For everyone who’s asking what the Japanese “Arc” means, it’s simply the name of the lab doing tests as we see at 2:17 the camera/binoculars are labeled “Arc-Hive.” Seems like the video is portraying our memory’s and how we almost process them if you will

So the background of the video was they wanted to see his memories and he became paralyzed in a car accident which killed his wife and daughter and the black guy smiling in the video was the one who hit them because he was a drunk driver... and that's why he was crying in the video but he had the strength to stand up after which in turn meant he finally faced his demons and accepted them for what they were this video is cold...
