Unspoken assumption here is that Latin Americans, when push comes to shove, will take over that infrastructure and nationalize it. Which seems likely. China is FAR away. And these countries are in better shape (if only via size) than Sri Lanka etc.
@showcaseSampa22 күн бұрын
Yes, it is a correct assumption. Albeit a cyclical one. Good point. But at this point, the Chinese have not built anything but expanding a port here and there. And most of concessions are subject to a bidding process. Up until recently, they were built by the Government and then offer in a tendering process. Now, the turns is, "we grant you a concession so you can build upon our rights of way ".

Peter makes a good point. On the Monroe Doctrine, that was geared towards the Europeans. The US didn't want European wars coming to the Western Hemisphere. That has been successful for the most part. China will try debt trap diplomacy, and many people use the example of Sri Lanka. The US has no pressing interest in Sri Lanka. The Indians do. Let them deal with it. In South America the US will step in, where it makes sense, to bail out those countries, and it probably will be private capital. There are already examples of the "tofu dreg" construction that the Chinese are famous for in South America. The South Americans will get the point. This is true in Africa, and western countries have started to step in there as well. As China collapses things will get better. Frankly, that collapse is going to happen sooner rather than later.

So by selling off their US treasury bonds and investing that cash in friendly countries, China is hitting 2 birds with one stone. @@showcaseSampa China began assembling the antenna of the China-Argentina Radio Telescope (CART) at the El Leoncito Astronomical Complex in Argentina’s San Juan province on November 23, 2023, generating concerns among experts despite its importance as the largest radio telescope in South America. With 20 percent progress, the radio telescope, which will have a 40-meter diameter dish, is projected to be completed by May 2024 and fully operational by the end of the year, reported daily Diario de Cuyo, based in San Juan, Argentina. “China seeks to expand its global surveillance reach to monitor the activities of the United States and NATO countries. This objective is replicated in Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, and Venezuela,” Euclides Tapia, a senior lecturer in International Relations at the University of Panama, told Diálogo. “The radio telescope is not focused on exploring the moon, but quite a bit further down.”

Let's hope the USA can learn from other countries' successes. While I might be pessimistic, it often feels like American banks and construction companies fall short when it comes to large infrastructure projects. In contrast, China has shown remarkable progress in this area. The USA seems more focused on developing new social apps and payment platforms, with banks even financing billions for platforms like X, while China continues to improve its food production and makes it more affordable. There's a lot the US could take from this, especially in terms of long-term, practical investments in infrastructure and sustainability

China has only recently started doing it and builds what isn't really needed, just what China thinks they can stick the local population with.

The Chinese are trying to build from the Coastline up to Sao Paulo ???? How clueless of him . Hey Petey , this has been done decades ago , before there were Chinese around in measurable numbers ! It got started before the British laid rail tracks . A.k.a. SPR- Sao Paulo Railways , later State Run RFFSA, connecting Santos, through ABC , Sao Paulo towards Jundiai and Campinas. And then paved roads ... 1. The old and now historically landmarked " Estrada Velha " or Old Road , snaking from Sao Bernardo , by the now VW plant though Cubatao ending in Santos. 2. Then, the newer , Anchieta Highway ( SP-151 ) , same parallel itinerary. Which is mostly used by freight trucks and buses. 3. And then the Imigrantes highway , completed early 80's, which bypass the sinuous and steep inclines employed by Anchieta. And then, connecting them all by Sao Bernardo do Campo, the Rodoanel beltway which is a huuuge toll ring road that connect to other highways North and West ( Castelo Branco, Raposo Tavares, Anhanguera ) . At least do yourself a favor..... Do your homework before opening your big mouth !

The Chinese want the natural resources, labor if it is cheaper, and access to any future market in that country. They can build an electrical and mechanical infrastructure which they understand, not necessarily the country they are building it in. Most importantly, they want to be the largest economy for years to come, and the go to country for technology, (and displace us in the technology leadership area).
@stephenderry948822 күн бұрын
They are investing. The result will be that China gets a cut of everything that goes through the port, or whatever piece of infrastructure it is. The countries generally can't afford the seed cost themselves. (Non-Chinese backed) private companies could take a punt but most don't have access to the levels of capital required or the confidence that it will pay off long-term. This "Africa Style Debt Trap" does not play here. Out in Brazil, at least, Chinese Companies bid for rights to use an existing piece of infra-structure. They might make due improvements on what is already in place, or expand. Case in point, Santos Port in the State of Sao Paulo. The local Port Authority was approached by a Chinese Shipper so they could locate their container terminal. there. The Port Authority ( Cia Docas Santos ), dragged its feet on dredging costs. The Chinese shipper went with the Paranagua-PR port, paying about 1 Billion ( not sure if Dollars or Reals ) for 90% stakehold in their terminal. For some odd reason, they are back at Santos, this time around with a more ambitious project to expand their presence into the existing Port into an adjoining section ( I recall being the Alemoa ). Then the Chinese wanted an Airport, and Rio's Tom Jobim International Airport was granted to them for their fee money. It turns, year two into the deal, they wanted to back out, as they were losing money.
