That's Okay, your still way successful! I agree, the true compression check is without motor running, and all plugs out, and read each cylinder turning the motor over.

Wrong or right compression test is done. Engine seems to work fine expect for water is not cycling thru pee port. Congrats.

Compression looks good for that Johnson outboard but you need to do a Link and sync on the carburetors something isn't right Johnson outboards are naturally throaty loud engines but I have a 150 and it's a lot quieter than yours boat looks great you're doing a good job

take all the plugs out when testing compression, also check the rhermostats, some engines wont pee till the thermos open

been a marine mechanic and repair shop owner for fifty years plus now. I have built literally thousands of your engine :-) It needs work friend but you are doing fine. Compression new was 120 psi. What you need is over 100 (90 if you have low compression head gaskets on it) and even, within 12 percent max. Anything outside of that means you have a burnt cylinder ur other issue like a bad head gasket etc. I can tell you from the brown discoloration of your paint on the engine (it's not from being dirty) that you had a major overheat issues sometime in its not too distant past. That normally happens from an old water pump issue and your impeller was bad but not broken into pieces at least. Water needs to cycle correctly. Make sure the pee hole is not plugged up. It probably is. you can blow air backwards into it while running and that normally clears it out. You have a sync and link issue as well and a timing issue. They are easily figured out with you tube videos. Did you have a cylinder at 76 lbs compression? The resy over a hundred? If so , that is a result of overheating or lean conditions normally. You have to check that piston out if so. If you let it ride you are looking at a total destruction of your engine down the road instead of just one cylinder needing work. Unlike a car, outboards can have just one cylinder bored out to .030 or even .045 if necessary. The balance will not be a problem so take time to make sure.... In the long run it will save you. Now for great news. The cross flow engines like yours were the most stable and best/longest lasting of any mfg. period. With maintenance and care they will run you for life. Just do the maintenance and make sure you arent scored on one cylinder. Piston drag CAN cause that popping and dragging we hear.... Have fun. If you need help pm me.

Please don’t run it during the compression test. Lol use the kill switch to stop it from firing during your compression test. If not you’ll kill your electrical components. Love the video. Reminds me of when I got my boat and started working on it. Make sure you rebuild your fuel pump which is why you have to keep on pumping the bulb. replace all the rubber hoses for piece of mind. Change thermostats. Idk if your motor has a poppet valve but replace it if it does before you hit the water because it uses the excess water from the water pump at high rpm’s to cool your exhaust and regulate your water pressure. Make sure you check for fire on all plugs cuz it can run on less than 6 cylinders. Will run like crap on the water. Things that tend to cause weak fire or no fire. Coils, plugs, switchboxes, bad trigger or/stator. Definitely go through your electrical before you hit the water or you’ll it’ll end very bad.

When you slide the lower back on, the water pump housing needs to line up and insert into the copper water tube going up to the engine. There should also be a rubber grommet between the two to make a water tight seal.

Yea, I don't think he got the water tube inserted into the grommet in the water pump housing. He could try blowing air into the pisser tube to see if it's plugged but not confident that's it. Didn't even look at it when putting the lower on. Never seen anyone do a compression test with it running, LOL Those numbers are really low in that circumstance.

It is, atleast I’m pretty sure. grommet is there as well. I just cut the video up to pace it faster. A lot just isn’t shown. I’ll double check tho!

@@TightlineTV use a piece of fine bailing wire and stick it in the piss tube it's on the right side in the back of the cowling. They always get stopped up from critters building nests in them. You can also unhook it from inside the cowling if it's really stopped up.

There’s also a little key for the impeller to connect it to the driveshaft. A lot of people miss it including me haha.

Double check to make sure your impeller is keyed. Some new ones are not broached thus it will never pump water out of the tell tail. Good video .

Replace/rebuild fuel pump, replace fuel filter. Replace spark plugs. Replace thermostats.

Go to 5:53. Always greade the impeller and inside of housing the impeller touches. But ALWAYS turn the shaft clockwise when installing impeller. Looked to be turning counter clockwise. Take the housing and sit it on impeller and sit your palm on it while turning shaft and she will slip right into place. Hope ya get her going and enjoy watching this series. Should remove all plugs for compression test... do not run the motor. But those are good compressions. Run premium non-ethanol gas. Find a local VP or SUNCO dealer to get you some 130 octane racing fuel to mix with the pump gas. I think it's the Blue fuel. Tell them what your doing and the get you the correct grade. It will run much better in that old Johnson. Thanks for sharing 🍺🎣

Nice progress!! You are at were is was a year With my build. I knew nothing about a big boy motor and I have learned sooo much since then. compression test got the job done. the results look promising. Recheck the key on the impeller she is not peeing like it should. And if you have to pump the bulb to keep it running,next is the fuel pump. Great job you got this!!

Fun video to watch. As someone who’s worked on boat motors for a few years now, yeah you missed some stuff but you covered some good basics. You’re learning, learning is cool if you ask me. Make a quick update video on the linkage next (either replace or repair. More than likely replace if the cables are froze.) then full vid taking it out. 👍

A properly tuned and mixed 2 stroke should barely smoke once warmed up, if its still blowing a lot of smoke after being warmed up, it has too much oil in the mix.

Tip for beginners with carbs buy a welding tip cleaner it will help clean those small ports and jets in the carb. They are cheap and available at almost any hardware store.

I had same motor on a 1989 Bomber Bass Boat. Loved the boat, hated the motor. If you like working on outboards this is a good one to own. Lol

A huge problem I have with the pee stream on my boat is dirt dobbers getting in an making a nest. Every year my motor doesn't pee and I end up having to take a clothes hanger and beating the dirt out. Usually it happens multiple times a year for me.

Take all plugs out. Crank for about 5 seconds on each cylinder and check PSI.

Just a thought for others out there instead of needing an air compressor you can use cans of dust off compressed air. Works pretty well. You should also check the timing on the motor.

Take all the plugs out, leave the key off to disable the ignition, clamp a wire on the positive lead coming from the battery at the solenoid and use it to jump 12 volts over to the positive terminal used to actuate the solenoid. This way you crank the engine over without having fire to the plug wires. Open the throttle wide open them crank on it till the needle quits going up and record the reading. Some say opening the throttle makes no difference but I've seen it add 5 lbs on one particular motor recently.

judging from what i can see, its not pumping water... should be pee'ing water out just above the exhaust ports there on the back. also the backfiring and rough idle id bet is its not running on all 6 cylinders... I know its running, and i know all 6 cylinders had compression, but something seems off with the way it sounded and esp revving up the motor, should rev faster and louder then what it was , esp with the motor being out of the water.

I had same engine. When I did my impeller I didn’t have water pissing out either. Blew threw water line with air was good.Took it all back apart and looked good. Took line back off and even though I could blow through with air there was debris in the hose. Cleaned it out and all good. Don’t tear back apart like I did lol

Those were one of the best engines they ever made btw. Do not trash it because its a staple. They were bullet proof and the age shows how good they were. The gt ans the enforcer were some of the best engines made.

Tell me you're a beginner without telling me you're a beginner 😂 all good man, we all start somewhere and by you doing the work yourself, even those little jobs, you just saved yourself hundreds of bucks, and learned some shit. Helpful tip for the impeller, slide the impeller down the shaft, align it with the keyway, and for the housing, slide it down on top of the impeller. While applying pressure on the housing, rotate the shaft clockwise and the housing slides right on. Also, always put a little silicone grease on the impeller for that initial start up ..good way to prevent damage

I had to constantly pump the bulb to keep my motor running, changed out the fuel pmp and that fixed it.

wierd question on the waterpump. There is a key you have to put in it to make the rubber spin. I did not see water coming out of anywhere. how hot did the engine get after a minute or two of running? You did put ooil in the fuel right? You do NOT need to run high octane gas in it. Just run good gas.

Taking some compress air either with a compressor or air can to the pee port can some times free up the blockage. Google pee hole on a Johnson motor so you know where it is. Don’t continue running it till you know it is spitting water from the pee port! You could over heat the engine and lock it up.

Really the end result was good. What you are looking for is every cylinder to be within 10% of each other. Total guess as I have never done it that way but you should have seen about 90 to maybe 100psi. I would imagine with it running and the explosions in the other cylinders driving it harder than a starter does it would read higher as it did. That motor should "pee" pretty quick (seconds). Some of the Merc's have to warm up and open the thermostat before they pee but this GT should pee asap. Check the thermostats and the poppit valve. could be either or both are stuck. FYI the idle on muffs will never be great as the submerged lower unit/exhaust does add just a little backpressure the motor "enjoys". Sounds good!!! Like an old OMC. They seem kind of "rattley" at idle especially on muffs but it will sing when pushing the boat. You will be in the 60mph range. What prop is on it?

Those are low compression engines. Pull all plugs and full throttle during cranking to get an accurate compression reading. I’d replace all of the recirc lines and test the recirc check valves while it’s apart. Decarbon the motor and check timing.

I have an old engine like this (75 Evinrude) and yeah its water is suppose to shoot out just like any other. I couldn't see it coming out so you may want to look into that.

If you didn’t already, check your fuel lines to the gas tank. For awhile they made grey ones with a liner that deteriorates and turns into a sludge. Definitely not something you want getting into your motor.

Yes make sure water is peeing out. U can burn out stuff very quickly. U should have bought the water pump kit. Comes with the housing , impeller, gaskets and grommets. Everything has to be installed correctly for it to piss out water

Check for a scratched cylinder there is pretty good compression but I would check anyways especially because of that 75 psi

Do not send it until you are getting water peeing out. Clean out the lines, if they are clean, then time for a water pump replacement. Motor did to start sounding good after she warmed up.

Not pissing-burn up the impeller and blow the outboard. Have you checked the numbers on the frame? Is that a regular or a commercial unit? Neighbor has that same year but his is a commercial one and some parts are different than the public ones.

Did you make sure water pump fins are trailing the same direction of engine.. looks like you just shoved the pump cover down on the rubber impeller. they might be turned the wrong way.. and that sir will burn your motor out..way to do it is as your pushing down on the round cover turn the shaft in the direction the motor runs and push down so that way the impeller fins go into the housing curved the correct direction..

Sounds like you may have a coil not firing. After your done do what you’re going to do while it’s running pull one plug wire off one at a time to see if anything changes. Use something that has a rubber handles on it so not to get shocked.

The engine should not fire when compression testing, you should pull the safety clip. That said you got the results that you need. You really need to test spark on all cylinders, you have have at least 2 cylinders not firing. You friend noticed it, when you were testing one of the cylinders and it fired off it sounded off while a few of the cylinders not firing the sound didn’t change.

I used to own an engine like yours. You had metal filings in your gear lube, I would look at those gears closely. I did not and paid the price later.

Pull your kill switch so it will turn over but not start and then do your compression test.

When you do a compression test, you need to disconnect the fuel and take out all of the spark plugs. Your motor shouldn’t fire when doing this test. Also make sure you’re using a good compression tester like Craftsman or MacTools.

remove the vro it's not pumping gas and don't try to rebuild it and install a conventional pump if you don't want it to stop injecting oil and prevent the engine die. I just rebuilt my engine and I had a lot of problems with the vro and the best thing was to put a conventional pump

run engine out of gas, remove all plugs, then rotated engine with key the same amount of time for each cylinder...for cars, you want no more then 10% deviation

The engine has to turn over to build compression. You don't want it to start. You take all the plugs out before you test the cylinders.

Is the water pump making hot water out the lowe unit? I don't see the hot water stream when it's running. Your going to need to find out why it's not cycling the water through the system. If you don't find the blockage the engine will surly burn up, so fix it now before you try to go anywhere on the lake. Put the lower unit in a full trashcan of water.. This is a better test of the water pump. It may need more water going in the water intake for the water pump to prime.. Or you may have not plugged the water tube into the engine correctly when you put the lower unit back on! If that water pump tube didn't seal correctly, then the system won't flow coolant water through the engine!

sounds like it's not firing on every cylinder double check spark and change plugs, if it's not running on every cylinder and you put it in the water it won't run good under a load, change the lower gear lube aswell before you run it. as for the back fire it could be as simple as plugs or it could be a flywheel key or timing.

a couple of things I can tell you from experience. I know an old boat with a Johnson Evinrude engine. those things are cold-natured. once they get warmed up they run well. the water should come out of a small hose just under the engine on the starboard side. so yes maybe the water pump is bad. just an FYI on cleaning the carbs you can use a torch tip cleaning kit to clean out any of those small holes. I think I paid like 15 bucks for mine.

your tell tell is not peeing water. Meaning that something is clogged or the pump is bad. do not take it on the water until you get that solved or you will blow the motor

IT AINT RUNNING ON ALL 6!! Pull the plug wires while its running one by one to see which ones effect the RPM...or you can short them out by pushing a test light through the boot of the plug while its running

With earths water evaporating so much, I think sometime soon all U.S.Lakes and Waterways will ban gas/oil motors on the water. That is why all manufacturers and some that are not usual name brand are creating electric boat motors….

Has to turn over with that style. Using air everything is static. Using air one might as well do a leakdown test on each cylinder. Have a 48 hour Yamaha, fuel getting into oil. Dealer swore it was the intake but after I found out he didn't do the leakdown test I forced him to do so. #4 was losing 37%. 'I' completely overhauled it, couldn't trust the dealership. #4 compression rings installed opposite, and what should of been the top one was in the middle and upside down. Guess it was a friday afternoon factory build and someone was wanting to get to the bar. New bearings, rings, injectors, electronics, both pumps, she runs 13 mph faster than it originally did out of the crate. Leakdown can tell you a lot because the compression was the same on all cyclinders.

Compression should not be less than 100psi with all the plugs out and the throttle is held open. Then crank for 4 compressions

Aren't you supposed to have all plug wires disconnected when doing a compression test? Engine should not be running.

Better change out all fuel lines that are grey in color. They collapse and will completely stop all carbs up. That’s probably why your losing prime. Good job though bud.

Hey a lot of time when you hooked to a hose it don’t pee very good. When you go to the lake it will really tell you. As long as you got your impeller is correctly lol

@@TightlineTV well let me give you a order to do things in, first always do compression first, sometimes it will save you time and money if it’s bad. Then move on to spark and last check lower unit for water. If all those check out then start cleaning carbs, buying impellers, gear oil and so fourth. Also next time you do a compression test take all of the plugs out and ground out the plug wires. Keep cranking it until the gauge needle stops.
