I'm glad you came around on Metacurrency. They get a bad rap imo. You're right that they can be awkward, but a bit of table discipline can help that. And what they often do is give your players a way to enact concepts from fiction like "Plot Armour" without saddling the GM with the expectation of fudging to keep a beloved character alive. When they're well implemented they help let a game emulate a genre and allow players to make interesting gameplay decisions. As much as we want immersion, there is no harm in remembering that these are ultimately games at the end of the day and the occasional dip into "meta" doesn't have to be a disaster

I agree. What I should have done was to discuss with the group how we can roleplay the game mechanic rather than cutting it out entirely. Thanks for the comment Abraham!

Just woke up to seeing this. Good to know you have boons and hexes working at your table un-intrusively. I haven't seen the whole video yet. I'm curious how it can be handled in an online game without too much overhead.

Good question. Since a poker chip is easily exchanged at a physical table, I imagine this is easier to accomplish in-person. That said, we use the same sort of currency in the Savage Worlds game and that is all online. It is perhaps one of the few arguments in favor of using a VTT. Metacurrencies seem to be a bit of a hot-button issue.

Always important to remain flexible in our stances. I eschew all 'metacurrencies' though.
