John Flower took this farmhouse from Yunnan, China, and rebuilt it in West Virginia!
Hi tea friends, we're in West Virginia for this Teatime with Jesse episode. I share some red tea with John Flower, Co-Founder of China Folk House and Director of the Sidwell Friends School Chinese Studies Program. We explore how a farmhouse saved from a dam in Yunnan became a center for community and cultural exchange in West Virginia. John's China Folk House Retreat project offers unique insights into traditional agriculture, architecture, and crafts from rural China.

Shouldn’t be surprised by Jesse’s interviewing skills (years of stage and television experience after all!) but I am still pleasantly surprised that “tea guy” is good at this. 😂 Asks sophisticated questions, while preparing tea - in front of a live audience lol. I’d scald myself…

this is one of the best teatimes of the bunch, but i laughed every time Jesse said “cut to the ___ footage” and there was no clip. he even said “we have noodle footage” and there was nothing 😂

Thank you for having this wonderful interview with Mr.Flower and the China Folk House. I watched the fil documentary how the China House was disassembled. I am so glad you introduced many interesting guests to your Podcast and KZbin but this China Folk House interview is so real and people can visit .

Thank you for sharing this story with us. We have several indigenous communities in the US that still choose to go without connecting to the power grid. Some among the pueblo tribes, being the oldest continually inhabited communities in North America.

Easily my favorite episode yet! So much about this story speaks to my heart - the knowledge of everyday people valued for its uniqueness and relevance to modern life even as modern practices threaten to displace it. The merging of academic and practical learning. Cultural exchange that highlights rather than absorbs the cultures involved. Wonderful to see such a profound place through of all things a tea podcast. So many things about this house were explained but one thing I didn't see mentioned are the plants in the front. Are those Yunnan plants? Or maybe West Virginia ones, like the wood used for the back houses?
