When I bring plants in here in Kentucky, fungus gnats become a big problem. I've learned to take cuttings in water especially Coleus. Long stems are beautiful in a vase and the colors are perfect for fall. They hold up for a long time in a sunny window. By January they are getting leggy, time to re-cut into water. As soon as roots appear they go into seed starter soil. They grow beautifully in a sunny window until time to plant out again!

Wet sand is my choice for rooting. I find it makes stronger roots and it's fine in a vase.
@mjmaslin65524 жыл бұрын
Sand on top of soil will do away with fungus gnats. Cover completely and gnats cannot get in or out. Some of my plants that had been slow growers became lush, especially my Begonia “immense.”
@truthtalker40383 жыл бұрын
Yes What MJ said, sand on top of soil will stop gnat reproduction.. I use lil pebbles on top of my soil surface. I used to have tons of gnats.. now I don't have any! Also letting the top inch of soil in your plants dry out between watering also helps.. they lay eggs in the top of the soil and they like it wet!

I brought my plants inside a couple weeks ago and noticed that so many gnats came so I put one of those fly ribbons out and you would not believe how many nuts got on there the whole problem was solved with those fly ribbons!

Great video. I'm in zone 4 (western Canada) and I've been bringing in plants for a number of years. I have found recently that if I pot them up and keep them outside for a 4-7 days before I bring them into the sunroom, I've had better luck. I'm thinking it's doubly-stressful to be repotted and then new light/temp conditions, so one step at a time seems to be less stressful for them.

Last year I brought my Bell Pepper plants in when we started getting frost. Through out winter it kept losing one green leaf after another. It finally got to be all sticks in the pot. I thought it was dead but I kept it inside and once in a while I watered them with other plants.... Spring time I noticed few leafs are coming out! I planted them in a brand new soil and set them out when it was warm enough and in no time I got beautiful healthy bell pepper plants with tons of peppers all season long!!! I live in zone 5b.

You've given me the courage to try this again. Last winter, I brought in my herbs and a few favorite plants and they all died. I think it's because I treated them like I did when they were outside (just let them take in available light and also watered and fertilized a lot ... when I remembered). But inside light and humidity is different, you are so right. And just letting them rest ... I can do that. Grow lights and pebbles and water in saucers and a misting bottle are on my radar now. It's so hard to toss some plants that I've become buddies with over the summer. Thank you!

Thanks for the super helpful video! Years ago, my mom moved into my grandparent's place to take care of them as my grandmother had dementia and my grandfather was too feeble to care for her; anyway, my mom and asked me to keep all her houseplants at my place while the rest of her belongings went into storage. Well, I had zero experience with houseplants and almost all of them died! I felt so horrible because some of them she'd had since I was a kid! She was very understanding about it, but since then I've been too scared to have anything more to do with houseplants. Watching your videos gives me courage and teaches me so much! I'm almost ready to try having my own houseplants. I just love your videos and your bright, shining light you bring to them. ❤️

I screwed up this past spring, thinking it was going to get warm in May and we had a good first in May. I almost lost my plants, but they came back. So, this year they won't go out until the last of May or early June. I will have to do some growing lighters, and put some of them in my basement. Thank you for your advice.

Awesome. Thanks for the advice. I have a spare bedroom without a bed in it. It's facing the west side of my house. That's where I have been putting my plants the last few years and they done great. This room is next to my bathroom which makes it easier to water. My plants also get the heat from my bathroom so they don't dry out as much. My house is an old house and the rooms are oddly made, having to go into one to go into the other. That's why my spare room is perfect for my plants 🪴.

I have had good outcomes with overwintering Acanthus, silver dichondra, muehlenbeckia wire vine, and Plumbago auriculata in my west basement window. They are not cold hardy here in northern Utah. Many outdoor plants are too prone to aphids, mealy bugs and spider mites when brought inside, but these have resisted bugs so far. Acanthus gets long stems & small leaves, Plumbago even blooms a little but requires clean up in spring.

It's sad that you have to dig out plants for the winter or leave them in the ground and perhaps loose them to the frost and snow. I live in Victoria Australia and while it get's cold, we don't get snow. Over wintering seems like a lot of work. However, how awesome is it that you get to enjoy those absolutely awesome plants inside in the winter time when you can't be outside.....BONUS!!!
@cherylanderson33403 жыл бұрын
I love her houseplants - especially the white begonia. To keep the moisture levels up in winter, I like using the inexpensive large, heavy, thick, glazed clay plant saucers & found, many years ago. They're a bit too heavy but they are big & won't blow away. You can fill them with any kind of natural pebbles of different types & colors to sit a smaller pot or groupings of pots together to keep the moisture level higher over winter. I've used gravel from when I kept fish tanks, plus pretty rocks I'd bought or found when digging in the yard, & some I'd found at the beach. Not all found rocks are safe in a fish tank though, as they might leach out minerals or whatever... All my plants are in a sunny corner in the living room where the East & South windows meet & both are floor to ceiling windows, with baseboard heat running right below them. So whether it's the hot sun in summer or the baseboard heat on in the winter, I find that placing saucers with some water in them as well as decorative bowls, a few vases with water placed in windows & around the rooms do really help moisturize the air, the plants - & us. A few times, I've found my daughter's cat drinking the water in the pebble saucers, though she has a stainless water bowl that I keep filled with fresh water. I've even noticed her drinking water out of a watering can when I came back into the room, with more water for the plants. I was relieved I hadn't put anything toxic to cats into the water. Word to the wise if you have pets - don't leave things lying around. If you treat your plants while watering or treating them, using poisons, do keep track of & remove / bag or box containers after using, and lift them up to where it won't harm the pets & don't let your pet re-enter that room until that draining toxic water is completely flushed out of every pot saucer. Since I've been keeping several plants up on tables now, at some distance from the baseboard heat, along with a few large plants which sit inside big urns that look like stone, I haven't used the pebble trays in several years - so I appreciate the reminder. Even those would benefit by having a saucer of water & pebbles beneath it. I still have some gravel & stones I'd bought when I kept fish, so a store that sells fish tank decor, & related equipment might have what you need - especially if you want to do this quickly & the weather has turned cold or you're not about to go out & search for a bucket full of pebbles & clean gravel. It's a good place to find different colors of gravel & different types of stones pebbles & stones. Also I just recalled I'd found some pretty, larger pebbles & bags of sea shells at a Dollar Store.

We moved in November and where we’re at now has so many spiders as we are now living in the lake. I treated with Bonide a systemic treatment in granules. It was a pain in the buttocks. Also factor in I have two 90lb dogs, one of which likes to eat dirt from my planters, and a cat. So I wrapped a generous skirting of window screen from trunk to halfway to the bottom of the pot. Stapled the seam, if it was a large pot I put four rocks on top of the screen and then wrapped it again. I did that with five planters. A hibiscus, a yellow trumpet tree, a Mandevilla, this giant umbrella plant/tree, Peruvian lily, geranium, and several ferns, ivy, and after seeing your video I’ll the coleus too.

One I kept inside over winter and it's like 3 ft tall and the other one was left outside in the green house. All the leaves died but now it has buds so new leaves are growing but because I think of that dormant period it didn't grow crazy like the one inside so it's like 1 ft tall.I also bring inside over the winter the geraniums.

B. Harry the trick to growing rosemary in a colder climate is to ring the plant, out past the branches with big flat stones layered on each other. Enough of the heat will retained from the sun and stay in the stones and keep the rosemary warm. It mimics the Mediterranean warmth. My Rosemary is huge. I live in zone 7b in SC so we have very cold weather four months out of the year. My rosemary has survived like this for 11 years. Good luck.

Great video! Love the coleus plants and rosemary U dug up. I bring *many* plants inside to save them from Milwaukee and Chicago hash winters. My favourites are a geranium that is 7 years old, a christmas cactus that is 11 years old and a "bamboo" palm tree that is 17 years old. One piece of advice I have is to use furniture felt pads ("footies") when using clay trays. The clay is *very, very* porous and will damage ANY surface you place it on; I learnt that the hard way with a walnut table I had to refinish, and a flooring area where I put some of the plants. Or find an alternative product like plastic trays. A couple of grow lights on a timer always come in handy.

I've been looking forward to this video, thanks Laura. It's funny, I have also done the opposite. I took one of my house plants a few years back, a variegated rubber tree, and put it out on my deck up against the garage. I'm dying to get one of these, they are just so unusual looking. :)

Hi Jacob, yes, the rubber tree has adapted to living out on my deck all year round. However, I am in Northern California, and we have a fairly mild climate. It never snows where I live, and on those more frosty nights in the winter (which usually are brief) I put a light blanket or tarp over some of my deck plants. It's worked out fairly well....

Oh man, that Rosemary is glorious. I love it, Did you keep the clippings to dry or toss them? Thyme in zone 5 can survive ok outside? does it depend what type of type? In a pot or in the ground? I would never have thought to paint a room the color that the room you put the plants in. I'd have been terrified of having such bold color but it's gorgeous with the way you have it set up Laura. I love it. 🌾 Merry meet 🌿

Im in New England, but also in Zone 5B, & I wouldn't expect a Rosemary to survive down to -10 or -15 degrees. In CA sure.

I'm amazed you can overwinter your fushia indoors. I don't have much luck with them outdoors. Ha! Yours was gorgeous! I'd love to know how you grow your fushia.

You have very basic style of gardening which is very inspiring and to the point. Suggest good inexpensive nursery, I know you like the laguna hills, but its a little distant from diamond bar area.

Rosemary likes room around it's roots. If it starts to twist it's often too late to save and the best thing is to take cuttings.

Ok garden answer family: I'm needing some fun, clever furniture and shelving great ideas for wintering over inside and displaying plants that are g'kid, dogs and gaming addicts friendly. Aka up and out of the way of traffic.😉 Placing on the floor makes me nervous. Please include ideas for smaller room or areas as well. Thank you do much in advance, Laura.

If you cut 1/3 of plant off it will Aid in no leaf drop. It produces new foliage. Works like a charm
