Milliput. A miniature painting mainstay, and a pain in the proverbial. When it goes bad, don't worry. You can save it!

In this miniature painting tutorial I show how you can reinvigorate milliput which has started to go bad in the packaging. Unfortunately milliput doesn't keep fresh in the box forever, but with a bit of work you can bring it back to life and make it usable once more. Hopefully this tip saves you a bit of money and frustration. I know how annoying it is to need to make up some putty only to open the box and find it's turned to stone.

I’ve learned a way to prevent this! It’s not for everyone but it works for me I got some standard and SF-White still good as new after 2 years! My secret; I buy 2 at a time and I separate them and store part A with part A and both part b’s together. I’ve found that the reason they go bad is from Fumes from the active hardener causing the resin part to get yellow and hard it’s always the resin stick and never the hardener. As Long as they are stored in sealed bags separately they will last 2-3x as long As the normal 1 year shelf life. Next time you get yourself a fresh stick try this!

You can prevent this by storing the grey stuff in a zip loc bag. That way it stays easier to work with for much longer.

This was an eye opener! Not the reactivation but the fact that you don't have to cut away the brown parts. I always thought these wouldn't react anymore and weren't brave enough to just give it a try. Awesome! Imagine how many potatoes I could have sculpted!

Hey, dude. If you check the online site they have an easier method. Put it on a baking sheet (minus the plastic) & into the microwave for 5-10 seconds. It'll be like brand new but it will be very hot. Done it multiple times myself & it works every time

Oh really? That's cool. I don't have a microwave but that's good to know. Cheers.

Great advice. Heating with a hairdryer or similar will also soften & make old putty more malleable to mix. I use a home made oven using a simple 40w incandescent lightbulb to harden & reduce cure times. Try adding a small amount of “Green stuff” to the Miliput makes a much better modelling experience as I do a lot of sculpting imo.

Hey Kujo, I tend to cut off the hard rind from the grey stuff. Recently, I've also started making a 50/50 mix of Milliput and Green Stuff, it sets hard like Milliput but is more adhesive like GS before it sets.
@KujoPainting
@KujoPainting 3 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. I've never heard of that. I guess it would no longer be sandable if you use GS in there?

I used my stick of nearly dead miliput the other day. It had bits in it from the grey resin stick doing that. I was gap filling with some alcohol-miliput paste and it did ok. But i promptly went out and bought more miliput lol

I haven’t used my Milliput Superfine White in 6 months. Went to use it yesterday and the putty in the blue plastic wrap had a brown discoloration and a kind of rancid smell. I wrote to the company and responded back today. They said could be many reasons why but did not share. They said I should try it on something other than the heirloom I wanted to restore. They did not say if it was safe or not to use it. They said if I don’t want to use it to just buy a new package. I was taken aback. Did yours smell? Does the smell go away? This product needs an expiration date and instructions on keeping it from turning. Thanks for your video. Be aware future buyers of Milliput.

Yeah I try to buy some only when I know I'll need it for something. I've never had a rancid smell as such although it doesn't smell great at the best of time. I don't notice any smell when it's cured. You could try keeping the sticks in a ziplock bag instead of those wraps they come in, it'll stop the air getting to them.
