Solder and capacitors were not an issue. It was the use of low tg underfill for the GPU that caused so many to red ring. This was fixed in 2008, 12th week of 2008 to be more specific.

When you're generating your NAND image, you can actually go into the SMC temperature target settings in J-Runner and directly modify those temperatures to more reasonable targets. I used to do that to every console that came through my shop for RGH or JTAG. Better to keep them running for a long time over keeping them quiet. Helps prevent that underfill softening if you set it to 60C or lower. You can then flash it by just putting the new NAND image on a USB stick formatted to FAT32 and plugging it into the console while it's powered off. Assuming you didn't mess with the boot options when you were changing the temp targets, booting the console by pressing the DVD eject button will start it up to Xell Reloaded. Xell will automatically scan the USB stick, find the updflash.bin file, and flash your NAND image through software. Easy.

The fixed versions of the Zephyrs only happened in a rare time period in 2009. I am very lucky to have one of these. Microsoft randomly decided to restart manufacturing of Zephyrs in 2009 and gave them Falcon GPUs (aka Revised RHEA GPU) for some reason. Ps. I am so happy someone actually realized that the issue was not overheating, it was poor manufacturing choices.
@chrisfratz2 күн бұрын
If I remember correctly they admitted that it was just bad manufacturing in the multi-part documentary series. It's really cool to have this primary source for some of these big gaming events and mishaps.

@eazy_black the first reliable units were falcons with GPUs produced after ~mid march 2008. Jasper was the first revision where _all_ produced were reliable.
@2K-Tan2 күн бұрын
@undefinednan7096 I feel very lucky to have an OG Jasper from the beginning of the window in 2009 where they first started production. The fact it already has an HDMI port and is reliable makes it age so much better than the launch 360's IMO, while still retaining the classic 360 look. Mine is an Arcade model that I slapped a period OEM 60 GB drive on as a kid. The console is so old it basically needs a complete restoration, as the disc drive I have to pull the credit card trick to get it to open and the laser is definitely starting to go but no red ring all these years later, I'd love to potentially open it up, restore it and RGH 3 mod the thing but learning how to solder first would help 😂😅
@razorsz1952 күн бұрын
Both the non AV and HDMI consoles could have recieved Rhea GPU replacements in 2007-9. (2010 you'd have very likely got a late falcon/jasper, Kronos/Tonasket was outside a return window, crossing into slim production before release.) If it was a xenon console (that hadn't recieved a short lived Elpis XGPU replacement, crica 2006-7 which was a revised Rhea XGPU seen in the falcons but with a compatable BGA Array for Xenon boards) Then it would have been nicknamed an "Opus" Which was a Falcon board with the HDMI not present, otherwise your then zephyr was practically a falcon with either its original drive re-paired to the console, more than likely a later Lite-on was paired with that board and installed into your chassis with a new 3 pin fan vs the EPS style 4 pin seen on the original console boards. There was never a "re-manufacturing" of Zephyrs. To my knowledge the late introduction of Zephyrs make for such a slim chance that an Elpis chip could see itself on a zephyr board, considering the falcon platform and revised Rhea chip was already in a prototype stage in the tailend of 06, which made sense why Elpis was so short lived. However the AA Taiwan XGPU examples were never really reliable until Q1/2 2008 (So Q4 07 Production window) until they finally change underfill suppliers, even then the consoles run warmer than the FG Korea/Early Xenon CANADA XCPU examples. Unfortunately then leaving a lot of the early term replacements, chip or board swaps, still had unreliable chips (my first 360 had a falcon swapped into what used to be a Zephyr and still died to an 0020 code, meaning the chip itself was dead, not just a manufacturing issue when i tested various signals etc.)

I still have my "launch" elite 360. It never red ringed (presumably that was rare on that revision), but it did get the something 74 error. Sent it in to Microsoft, came back safe and sound, still works to this day. Been meaning to do a noctua swap. The irony about the guy talking about the Wii is that my Wii actually had and still has GPU issues. Whenever I play certain games, these weird rainbow pixels show up. Sent it in to Nintendo. Not only did it not get fixed, but they fucking scratched the HELL out of it. When I asked if they could fix the case, they said they could, but it may very well get scratched again. Holy moly. Then you got the yellow light of death on PS3s. If we're gonna be honest, that whole generation had a plethora of hardware issues, with millions of each console dying or having serious issues, and the only reason the 360 was discussed as much was because it was first to really have problems. Such is the news cycle. It both makes me laugh and pains me when I realize how revised history was. It's like how people call the GameCube a failure, despite the xbox only selling maybe a million more consoles, both compared to the PS2's, what, 120 something million? Some people like to claim, "oh well it was MS's first console!" How is that a good excuse? We're talking about Microsoft, a company who has a more in depth understanding of the hardware they were using than either Sony or Nintendo (remember, it was based on PC hardware and originally called the DirectX Box), was making games on PC since the 80s, worked with Sony on physical PC hardware (the MSX anyone?), and was a giant multinational corporation by the late 90s when the XBOX project started, likely bigger than Nintendo or Sony combined. No, they were both failures if we're comparing sales numbers to Sony, it's just how one was written about, how one was remembered. Hell, the Wii and DS are "remembered" as having shovelware libraries, whereas the PSX and PS2 are just remembered for their classics, DESPITE the mountains of shovelware produced for both consoles. It's not even history being written by the victor, it's history being written by guys running magazines and websites...

Someone went into depth as to WHY the original PS3's and Xbox 360's were failing like crazy. Essentially, NVIDIA and their manufacturing process with the GPU's, did not choose a proper substrate that would hold the GPU chip in place when it was soldered. The only way to fix it would be to reflow the entire GPU board, which can only handle about 350C to 400C for only a few seconds before a lot of components are damaged. Some can be fixed on the PS3 side, not sure how far anyone has gotten on the 360 front. Edit: well, it was TSMC, not NVIDIA, but stoll NVIDIA sent out defective chips Good shit giving a nice recap on it.

Reflowing won't fix anything, you cannot reflow the die
@Coliflower1852 күн бұрын
Alhough Nvidia had the same issue, they didn't build the GPU for the xbox 360, that was ATI. The issue was seemingly with TSMC, that fab that makes everybody's silicon. Though nobody wanted to admit it probably because pissing off the world largest semiconductor manufactrer is an awful idea.

No game shops around my area so I became the red ring "fixer." I put in over 30 xclamps in 360s for free if you bought the hardware. Worked ab 90% of the time and I was happy to do it.

Good job, for once someone actually does their research before talking about the 360, which by the way, welcome to the Xbox 360 community, we have a Discord server too. The only flaw I would like to point out is the fact that while "get a Jasper" is pretty good advice in general due to their lower power consumption and the fact they generally run quieter than some earlier models, they're not the only one guaranteed to have a good GPU. Good/fixed GPUs started rolling out some time between March and May 2008, which was during the Falcon production run. What I would advise anyone who reads this comment to do who's interested in a phat 360 is to look for one with either a manufacture or service date of July 2008 or later. As you mentioned in the video, there was a chance that Zephyr could have had a fixed GPU, since Microsoft at that point had actually started retrofitting good replacement GPUs to those consoles when they came in for warranty repairs, which would eventually cease in 2011 or 2012 (I've seen a Falcon with a 2012 service date come across my workbench). I hope you enjoy having the modded console, it's been my go to method for 360 games myself. Any plans for a video on the PS Triple?
@Josh-Barnett2 күн бұрын
As a 360 guy, I can safely assume that depending on the gpu you got, you could basicly have a 90nm jasper gpu. There were 2 fixed chips, 1 safe up to 85c, and one safe up to 130c. The gpu rated for up to 130c has very similar looking underfill to the jasper gpus. So I have no reason to assume it would be any less reliable then a jasper, and the cpus have never been a cause for concern. Keep in mind this explanation is a bit dumbed down but I agree, late falcons even with the 85c rated gpu are still solid and all falcons have a temp curve that targets 80c and maxes out at 100c (when it shuts down with 2 rings)

The reason only "Jaspers" are guaranteed is because there is no way to tell for sure with a Falcon without opening it. You'll want to look for July 2008 or later. May-June can be a toss up. The Jasper and it's B Tonasket variant are always fixed.

Funny thing is, the Xbox 360 isn't bad in regards to thermals. The original power hungry Xenon boards in the factory chassis (with fresh thermal paste) IIRC doesn't rise above 85º at the worst. The consoles typically don't even hit that target anyway. It has more ventilation than you think. The hard drive enclosure is even a pass through design, so both the top and bottom of the console is able to intake a decent amount of air. Pretty clever design. *Edit:* didn't watch far enough to see that you mentioned the 360 temp targets LOL. Very well done video, just when I think you gloss over something, you smack me with it point blank. Bravo!

Lian Li’s design of an Xbox 360 helped push the trend of gaming consoles becoming more refined and user-friendly, from fan placement, cooling, to materials and considerations for improving performance without causing noise or overheating. These designs not only improve the gaming experience, but also reflect the trend that modern technology devices are pursuing, which is the combination of performance and aesthetics. This is a step forward in the development of modern consoles, where users not only want power but also want their products to look good and last.

I bought first white Xbox 360 from Gamestop. The clerk there told me that I should never store it in a cabinet or turn it on while on a shelf. He said it should only be played on an open table or something similar with no walls. This would be to provide plenty of ventilation. He said that otherwise, the red ring of death was guaranteed. I followed his advice and the console worked perfectly for years.
