Knit Along
What you'll need:
- 16" circular needle in a US 8 (or DPNs, your preference)
- 1 color of worsted weight yarn (I'm using Wooly Worsted in "Wheat" from Ewe Ewe Yarns)
- REMOVABLE stitch marker
Here's the written version of what I'm speaking about in the video.
Cast on 80 sts (if you are using DPNs you may cast on fewer on each of the 4 needles, ensuring that you have multiples of 2 on each needle).
Join for working in the round. HOWEVER! Don't clip the marker on to the needles as you'll find it confusing when you begin round 2. Clip it into the bottom of the first or last stitch to indicate the beginning of the round instead.
Round 1 (setup round): *K1, sl1yo; rep from * to end (last st worked is the sl1yo).
Round 2 (BRP rnd): *Sl1yo, brp; rep from * to end.
Rnd 3 (BRK rnd): *Brk, sl1yo; rep from * to end.
Rep [Rnds 2 and 3].

Thank you so much for your clear explanation! After a couple of trials and errors I got it! Great and indeed when you get the hold of it, it isn’t that difficult at all!

Thanks, this really helped me. I stared a project using two color and I had to put it aside because my ends were messed up. I'm going to follow a couple more of your videos and patterns. You should do a Craftsy class.

OMG THIS IS GREAT!! I kept thinking I was doing something wrong between the 1st and 2nd rounds, I wasn't getting that you had to do 2- sl1yo's I guess. I am about to give up making this stitch I've tried too many times to do it with failures. I have a couple of other things to make then I'll be trying this again!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for drawing attention to this very important step and how to see it, also I think the stitch marker helps too!! :-)

I found this very hard to follow. You were talking and knitting much too fast to me to keep up. I have to find another source.

I get very confused with the last stitch when changing from a purl row to a knit row, and vice versa... also, when you say slip 1 yarn over, it looks like you're doing the yarn over before slipping the stitch... which comes first... the yarn over or slipping the stitch?

So could I start Brioche knit in the middle of a hat? If so do I still need to do the set up round? And how would I end the brioche and go back to normal knitting? For reference I am trying to make a cc beanie with brioche rather than just K1P1! :)

What if in your set up row you end with a knit stitch, how do I move on to row 1 b?

Hello! First at all thank you so much for answer my question. What I mean is you say in round 1 of your writting explanations I have to knit K1,sl1yo, but what I see in the video is K1, yosl1. I can see the same you tell and write in second round. But in the third round I am confused again because I see in the video Brk, yo sl1 and you write Brk, sl1yo. Sorry! 😓 I guess I am understanding in a wrong way... I managed to Knit brioche stitch if I follow your video but I can't if I follow the commentary! Anyway, thank you so much! I have been trying to knit brioche for weeks. A lot of videos, classes... and I only managed follow your video instructions. THANKS!

Great question! The nomenclature of "sl1yo" simply means that with the yarn in front, you'll slip the next st and create a yarn over at the same time. In the case when you're working Rnd 2, the yarn is already in front so it does appear as though you are working the sl1 followed by a yarn over when you move the working yarn over the needle and to the front again to purl the next st. However! The same is true on the knit round, it just looks a little different. If you've brk'd the st, you must move the working yarn to the front, slip the next st purlwise, and then, by moving the yarn back into position to work the next st as a brk st (as in round 3) you're creating the yarn over. So the abbreviation doesn't change - but I suppose the definition does somewhat. I hope this helps!
