My granddad was an engineer by trade but grew up a farmer. After working for a while back when engineers made great money he went to the Ford dealership on a saturday in his flannel shirt and jeans. The only salesman who would talk to him was a new kid who had only been there a few days and desperately needed sales. There were a few other customers there in suits so the other salesmen, while not busy, were hoping for something more like them because this guy in a flannel shirt probably wouldn't even have enough credit to get anything anyway. After spending a while looking at all the different cars with the new guy my granddad told him he'd decided and wanted the new Thunderbird. The guy asked him if he'd thought about how long he wanted to finance it and my granddad asked him of they take checks because he didn't need financing.

I tried something similar at my local merc dealer. I was genuinely going to buy a van. I rocked up in my work boots dirty work pants and hi-vis hoodie. Didn't even get inside the showroom. Told me everything he had was very expensive (suggesting I couldn't afford any of it given the way looked) and told me go down the road to Toyota!
