That's so gratifying to hear, Christina Shepard, that you are enjoying the plants growing wild around you. I know that some folks don't care for plants being called weeds, but to me, that word identifies plants that are so prolific and persistent, usually not native to an area, so there's no risk of over-harvesting or interrupting natural relationships. Happy foraging!

Hi Good morning I found some poke salad yesterday a huge plant😇
@HaphazardHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on finding a poke plant. If it's in a shady or semi-shade location and gets enough water during the summer, you could have a long season of good eating. If you haven't tried poke before, I hope you enjoy it. Either way, if you ever want to give a taste review in a comment, I always appreciate other people's view about wild foods.

You're welcome, TSJN. I was fortunate to learn many things from my dad, who learned from his grandmother. And from so many people that wrote books, and have shared their knowledge and experience, too, in other ways. There's more to learn about wild plants and mushrooms than any one person can ever know, so we have to help each other out. I hope you get to enjoy some wild plants around you, too.

The yellow Queen Elizabeth rose (1958) looks very similar. Strong, upright growth, (up to 3m). The yellow is a sport from the original pink (1955) and both were very popular.
@HaphazardHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, Michele Antonello! That seems very possible. I think it was a Mother's Day gift long ago, like other plants in my yard where I know their history, so I could see somebody picking out a new variety. It definitely has strong, upright growth! I don't spray any of my roses, so the leaves have issues sometimes, but that bush thrives and puts out so many flowers from spring into fall.

Your salad looks amazing I didn't know you could eat rose petals💫

Some are better than others. To me, the best ones are the fragrant ones that are not red. Blue Girl and White Dawn are my favorites. This yellow one is nice, too. And Joseph's Coat. I'll try any rose that hasn't been sprayed, lol. If you find a kind you like, I'd enjoy knowing which ones they are. I'm always on the lookout! : )

Oh I watch your videos and want these wild salads so bad! I'd be afraid I'd kill myself doing this..do you live near KY or TN? I would love to learn from you! Is there an app that could tell us what things are and it's safe to eat?
@HaphazardHomestead2 жыл бұрын
I would have paid money for this salad at a restaurant, TNGalVOLS, and been happy about that, it was so good. I'm way over in western Oregon, but we have a lot of the same plants in our towns as you have in KY/TN. You should have black locust trees and redbud trees in your area. With roses, you have to try them out to see if they have good flavor. Some are much better than others, usually the more fragrant, the better. The key is to find ones that aren't sprayed. If you know anybody in a garden club, or can talk with a Master Gardener in your area, they could probably tell you exactly where to find all three kinds of flowers.

Thanks, Holly, that's a gorgeous salad. I'm lucky enough to have a Black Locust in my yard - well, yes, I love the flowers, but those darn spines - I always forget about them! Wisteria is another nice salad jewel, earlier in the season. Have you noticed that yellow roses often have a lemony flavor? I've used my deep red climber in salads, too, almost a raspberry flavor, but yes, I do have to clip the tip. I also put some in cookies once - sealed them in a tin for a couple of days, and the flavor really permeated them. Used my gran's classic refrigerator cookie recipe.
@HaphazardHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Grab in the wrong spot and black locust will remind us all of its spines, lol. I've used scissors to cut those flower clusters plenty of times, just for that reason. I would like to taste a lemony yellow rose, but none so far. Same with a raspberry flavor! I will have to try your cookie idea with a Blue Girl rose in my yard. It makes a great rose jam that would work so well in something like a simple sugar cookie. Thanks! So many things to try! :D :D

I feel you, dawn e! It was a rough year for black locust flowers here in my part of Oregon's Willamette Valley, too. But I can't begrudge the rain with the drought we've had. Hi Holly! I have no idea what kind of rose bush that is but its pretty though. I like these foraging salad vids as I'm branching out from mushrooms amd have the encyclopedia of north American edible plants field guide and accompanying book. I see those crepice satosa all over the place- now I'm totally gonna start making salad from them and dandelions 😀
@HaphazardHomestead2 жыл бұрын
These Crepis setosa can make dense patches of plants. When the plants start to mature or the days get longer, the leaves can get too hairy to eat in big pieces in a salad. But chopping them into tiny pieces, or using them for cooked greens is still good. There are so many plants that sort of look like a dandelion, but it's worth the effort to sort them out -- hawk's-beards, false hawksbeards, hawkweeds, hawkbits, cat's-ears, sow-thistles, wild lettuces, and on and on, lol. With a base of looking at details to know your mushrooms, you might enjoy sorting out all these "sort of dandelions", Douglas D! Happy botanizing!

You videos are a delight. I had NO IDEA you could eat locust flowers, since I was always just told the bark/wood is toxic to dogs so I avoided them. And I honestly never thought of eating rose petals. This is gorgeous, and I will be trying this!
@HaphazardHomestead2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you are enjoying my videos, Eryn S-S! I'm also glad people can eat things that dogs shouldn't, like chocolate and grapes. Those black locust flowers are really good, redbud flowers, too. With roses, you have to try out the ones you come across (that haven't been sprayed), because some are better than others. The fragrant ones seem like they have more flavor, but some will be bitter down at the base. If you try any of those flowers, I hope you'll leave a taste review in the comments sometime! Happy flower foraging!

Hi Holly, Happy New Year! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and are ready to take on the new year whatever it may bring. Missed you this summer, but that means you were busy, that's a good thing:) I'm making a big change in my diet that eliminates plant foods almost entirely, sorry to say. Had thought wild plants would help me in my recovery but have seen a steady decline unfortunately. Watched The channel Nutrition With Judy on oxalates and wondered if that may help clear the brain fog and low energy I have. It's been 2 weeks and feel a bit of a change for the better, which encourages me to stay on the carnivore diet, with condiments only, so not true carnivore yet. Happy to say if the this diet doesn't work out, I'll be back on keto with plant and meat. You haven't lost a subscriber but I wanted to say that my comments may not be the same as before. Will miss my foraging for weeds immensely, and my garden. It was so nice to get out and hunt for dinners! You showed me how to cook greens and that got me off and running with wild plants, it was awesome. I actually hope to come back to wild greens as it was fun to cook with also. Well, all the best and happy foraging this spring, I will be watching!

Wow, that's a big change, Tall Cedars! Whatever it takes to have good health for you, that's what counts. I really hope it works for you to get rid of your troubles. Maybe you will turn your garden into a flower patch and enjoy the change of pace. I've appreciated all your comments over the years. I'll be posting some videos with wild mushrooms in them, so maybe you will still find something you can hunt for and eat. Take care and have a great spring, when it finally gets up your way!

I learned so much all I see is food in my yard without even planting any vegetables. I have 3 Mulberry trees I never ate before made a bunch of greens for my pitas from my yard. Mint, dead nettle, plantain, dandelion, mulberry leaves, clover, violets and I have more yet to be identified. Not to concerned about my garden weeds anymore because I can eat them too.May not even plant a garden anymore.

Hold yup, are all rose petals edible? Please help. I have a rose bush in my garden. Can you do a video on roses?
@HaphazardHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Only some of them taste good enough to enjoy, in my experience. In general, the more fragrant ones taste stronger and better. Down in the comments, there was mention of yellow ones with a lemony flavor (although not the ones in my yard in this video), and red ones with a raspberry flavor. I have a Blue Girl rose that is so tasty. I don't spray my roses with fungicides against black spot, or pesticides for aphids, so they have to be survivors, lol. And the base of the petals, where they turn white, can be bitter on some varieties (just stack the petals up and trim off the base if that's the case). I wonder what your roses will be like - I'll look forward to what you find out!
