I think some of native North Carolinians on the coast must be descendants of Bristolians. My grandfather, a fisherman born in North Carolina, had a very similar accent.

@@karenmorris8899Don’t forget the Bristolian accent is basically a West Country accent,which stretches down through most of South Western England,including Somerset,Devon etc.A lot of American settlers from England would have come from there.

When I started trying to figure out how to do Stephen Merchant's accent, it was so hard to pinpoint how to do it. I looked up where he was born and here I am, figuring out more about what Bristol accents sound like.

I'm not sure why the Americans think it sounds like an American accent. I think they're always expecting Cockney or RP and because this accent has some superficial features that are found in American accents, they think it's American. I've lived in the US South. The West Country has flatter sounds and a more defined 'r' than other accents in the UK. Americans don't say 'spoiderrr' (arachnid) like Bristolians do.
@joesmith88756 жыл бұрын
The accent sounds American like because it is spoken some what flat and the speakers do not front their "O"s and do pronounce their "R"s.
