St Paul's Easton, Southmead and Lockleaze are far more dodgy than any of the areas featured here and the first two at least have a lot going for them. The idea that Kingsdown ( outside maybe of Stokes Croft which is a law onto itself and nobody in Bristol would class as Kingsdown anyway) is some kind of crime ridden hell hole is hilarious. With the infamous 'crack alley' and 'turbo island' in the Stokes Croft/St Paul's area and the number of abandoned houses and crack heads shouting in the streets I always felt it was much more dangerous that the rest of Bristol when I lived in the city.

I looked at this video to reminisce and see some areas I particularly liked. I've frequented all of these regularly as I've lived and worked amongst all of them here. I have no idea what anyone's expectations of inner city life is, but the images you've managed to focus on are what a lot of people may see as negative e.g. derelict buildings, tower blocks and graffiti. I particularly like these kind of places as well as the 'prettier' side of the city; however, if you don't show both sides it's totally out of context and could look grim to many. I know what the video is about, but the dialogue in some parts are an exaggeration . Telling people who alight from Temple Meads not to hang around or turn a wrong corner. Jesus, it's not a war zone. Do yourselves a favour and visit Bristol, you'll have an awesome time. Friendly people and great times to be had. If you're not involved in the shadier side or don't act like a dick, you'll be fine.

Oof trashed my dialogue 😀it’s all good, a bit of dry humour on my part and this is all still new to me. I’m not trying to put anyone off going to Bristol, and I don’t expect the tourist board to pick this video up! It’s intentionally one-sided, these are statistically the five highest crime areas in Bristol which was of interest to me, and backend analytical data from YT confirms it’s of interest to a wider audience. While nicer areas are not.

I do like the area a lot but there's less of a 'local' vibe to it now and businesses seem to go as soon as they pop up. St. Paul's has also lost many good pubs too. Lived in Bedmo, Redcliffe, St Werbs, Easton and now settled in Montpelier and maybe it's just me but I've never come across anything I would consider violent except places like Broad Quay on the weekend late at night which can get quite rowdy (fountains, bnb, millenium square, pryzm, v-shed etc). Stokes sort of "feels" like its gotten a bit worse to be honest over the years, mainly due to just rowdy students, but hey, I walk through it every night coming home and don't get hassled. I've walked home to the above locations consistently around 2-4am a few times a week (gigs, lash, late work etc) and never once have I got into any trouble. Any serious fighting I've ever seen has been some goof stepping to the wrong shit or some absolute cod being obnoxious and ticking off the wrong people. Feel like a lot of people who feel unsafe in Bristol are the muppets moving from richer areas paying 450,000 for a 2 bed in Bedmo then having an anxiety attack when they walk past some young'ens donning some North Face as they google maps the nearest Laura Ashley, which in all honest is their insecurity, not safety. No, it's not the "safety" you would feel in certain cities, but there is a sense of precaution some people just have. You need to get used to it in any Urban Area as condensed as Bristol.

I live just outside Bristol and have been to most of the areas featured, I don't think it's all as bad as portrayed here eg if you go to places like Temple Meads or the shopping centre around Cabot Circus in the daytime they feel completely safe, 90% of the crimes probably occur later on in the evening/night time. I appreciate you used the official crime statistics, but I'm an older gentleman who walks with a cane, and I lived in Charles Street at the bottom of Stokes' Croft for five years and never had any worries about the locals. I grew up in South London, and those streets would deserve the grim portrait you've painted here, but Bristol is one of the safest cities I've ever been in for sure. For the most part it's a small number of individuals with an extremely high number of crimes attributed to each. In Stockwood where I live, there's one house that's responsible for 90% of the crime, according to the official stats. So it's not always representative of an area. As long as you don't live next door to them, you probably won't have problems. Certainly Bedminster might be a place to be a little wary at night among the tower blocks, but in the day it's a safe as houses. Same for all the other locations, bar maybe Hartcliffe, and again you'd need to be deeply inside an unfamiliar estate to be in real trouble. I've visited mates all over the city in tower blocks and never had anything more than a casual look over by the local youts. Same as in south London, if you know the name of the blocks and can name a resident you're not going to get fucked with. If you went into an estate trying to buy a ten bag though, you might get a different experience. It's common sense really. That said, I don't wave a phone or camera about in dodgy places, so if you were getting the eye that's probably half of it. Safety is subjective. Generally though Bristol is full of absolutely lovely people, there's a fairly minimal number of scrotes who are full time pains in the arse. In town it's a bunch of pissheads who are responsible for the majority of violent crime, and shoplifters abound anywhere they can get away with it. Since the police don't do much, they've been emboldened. That's all. You must have grown up with a silver spoon in your mouth to find Bristol threatening, to be honest.

Wow. You’ve really gone to town on Bristol!!! I’ve lived i Bristol all my life and live and work in bedminster, city centre and temple meads areas. It’s nowhere near as bad as you say. Granted the graffiti is a problem and you can’t get away from the crime stats. However as someone in my late 40s who regularly goes out night and day in half the areas and has done for years, I can probably count on both hands how many serious crimes I’ve witnessed. If you mind your own business and stay on the right side of the law, you’re pretty much ok. In the main people are courteous and friendly. Some of your filming is of the same street/places over and over again. You’ve even got footage of the outside of a friend’s house which was during a time when they were gutting and renovating it (trying to portray fly tipping). The old pub and building around temple meads by the flats have been derelict for over 15 years or more. You mention it’s probably only recent and deteriorated quickly because of how rough it is around there which is non sense. The low property prices around this area is because it’s all flats and no houses not because of how deprived the area is. Some of the buildings that are empty are because of the extortionate fees charged by the council and landlords making it difficult for businesses to survive. But there do and they are. I could go on and I hope people pay no attention to your unfair and imbalanced portrayal of Bristol.

I grew up and lived in various parts around and in Bristol from 1981-2018. It was great in the 1980's, 1990s' and first half of the 2000's but then it started getting gentrified (like a lot of cities around this time) and then started to become full of pretentious 'cool' people from London. You stopped seeing people you knew and the whole city is just unrelatable. The city centre has been declining for the last 15 years, its overrated and overpriced. Bedminster was seen as a shit hole, Bradley Stole soulless and Brislington full of people with names like Rupert, Jacinta and Freddy the fucking cat. Stokes Croft was dodgy but that's where a lot of the Alternative venues were in the 2000's. Old Market was always seen as Seedy and had quite a lot of Adult Shops and Gay Saunas. Bristol is getting more dodgy because the scum of London are moving there.

Having lived here for 15 years I'd say the idea that Bedminster is one of the most dangerous places in Bristol is completely laughable. Its one of the most gentrified areas in the city with some of the fastest rising house prices in the entire UK. Those crime numbers must be skewed by including parts of Knowle or Bishopsworth or be entirely made up of petty minor crimes. You're more likely to be run over by a young mother with a skinny chai latte on North Street than ever see a fight. Similarly I'm amazed Easton didnt make the list. I worked there for five years and the area around Stapleton Road was rife with muggings, gang fights and a couple of murders. I'm based near Bristol - some of this surprises me, some of it doesn't. I haven't seen much trouble in Kingsdown - admittedly it is very polarised, the bulk of it (probably two-thirds) consists of pretty affluent inner suburban roads - the bit closest to Stokes Croft is dodgy. The main central area (round Broadmead) has really gone to rack and ruin over the last few years, with a lot of shops now boarded up and many people sleeping rough. Broadmead itself will be closing down within the next 18 months (it's being demolished & replaced with flats and offices) so it will likely get worse before it gets better. Temple Meads probably has such a big issue with crime because it's sandwiched between Redcliffe on one side and Barton Hill, Lawrence Hill and Easton (all areas with high crime rates) on the other. Bedminster has actually improved of late - I've walked round there at night and not seen much in the way of trouble. It has benefitted from the gentrification/yuppification of surrounding areas like Southville.

The reason you saw homelessness in kingsdown is because right next to the park you put your drone up is a hostel for homeless people. Its why they tend to hang around in the park right next to it. I've lived in Hartcliffe for almost 30 years, and can honestly say i've never had any real trouble living there. Most people who live there certainly don't feel deprived and have good jobs and go to college and universities. Just like anywhere in Britain, you're going to have good and bad people in both deprived and affluent areas. I'm in no way attacking you're view as it's based on government statistics, but just to possibly educate those who wouldn't go anywhere near Hartcliffe based on - what i would say, unfair criticism. It's not the best place in the world, but it's not the hell hole people make it out to be. Most people who judge Hartcliffe have never stepped foot in the area.

This is great viewing, because you use factual data as well as clips of our City as we know it to be, as opposed to the way in which many seem to idealise Bristol (eg endless pictures of Clifton). There are a number of comments below which read as calling into question your findings and they pose interesting questions: I too am extremely surprised at a number of absences from the list (most obviously Southmead and Easton, but there are some parts of East Bristol too which I would have expected to figure). I can't help wondering whether the stats might be factually correct but possibly misleading, there might be cultural factors at play - ie very high crime areas where serious offences are routinely not even reported to the police. A 'tourist' or shopper in the City centre or Temple Meads areas is probaly far more likely to report crimes which are relatively minor compared to inter-gang violence or other drug related crimes happening elsewhere across the city. So sadly, I guess this (great) work is in fact, examination of the tip of an iceberg.
@ukexplored Жыл бұрын
Thanks, appreciate your kind words. It’s exactly what you said, yes, and I touch on it in the video; like templemeads being due to the station, bedminster having disproportionate vehicle crime (this is all from memory), some areas not reporting many crimes, and so on. I do take into account the opinions of locals in some videos, but for the most part I use published stats as a constant.

I would not agree with the video and how you named the areas. I’m Bristolian and lived in Bristol for a long time. The places you named and then showed on the video are not the same as how they are known. I think you may have got your info from voting ward boundaries? Stokes Croft is part of St Pauls, an area that you didn’t mention but well known to be very dodgy to walk through. As is Lawrence Hill and Easton. You’ll not be hassled in Bedminster (your car may be a target at night). The city centre itself is fine. Broadmead shopping centre (near the centre) is awful and full of street drinkers. Basically, if you put a pin in Broadmead and drew a line east you would hit St Jude’s, at Pauls, Stapleton Road and Easton. They are the places you would feel venerable and not want to go. IMO.

As someone who's lived in Bristol for 46 years I can say the areas listed in this video are not the most dangerous, the only rough area in this list is Hartcliffe but it's no worse than any other council estate, Bedminster is a little bit run down around the shopping areas but is one of the more expensive desirable places in Bristol, there are barely any residential properties in Temple meads, Easton and St Paul's particularly Stapleton Road are 10 times worse and I wouldn't walk there at night if I could help it. I would say though these areas and the city centre have gone down hill massively in the last few years I couldn't believe what a dump the city centre has become when I recently visited the graffiti didn't help either. If I made a list it would be St Paul's, Easton, Lawrence hill, top 3 and then either Knowle west, Hartcliffe or Southmead, or any other council estate around Bristol but there not that bad in my opinion..
