Property prices in Bristol are nine times average earnings. That’s forced teaching assistants Mark and Sarah to live in a van on the city’s streets for two years in order to save up for a deposit on a flat. They’re just two of an estimated 600 people living in vehicles in Bristol. Another person in the film is 80-year-old Cameron. He has mobility issues and a number of medical conditions which means he needs to stay close to the local hospital

Iv just found myself to becoming homeless in 6 weeks 😢 Iv lived in my current rented property in Bristol for 17 years. I am a full time carer for my two autistic children. Iv been looking for another rental for 7 months with no luck due to being grossly out priced or discriminated against for not being able to work. I went to Bristol city council yesterday to get help I was told to wait until I’m evicted by bailiffs only then they will put me and my special needs boys in emergency accommodation of which I’ll be waiting a minimum of 18 to 24 for permanent social housing. I wish I could get a caravan and be free of all these constraints of how the system is currently run. Greed is the root cause of so many peoples suffering. You are not truly rich until you have something money can not buy

Trouble is living in a van doesn’t free you from life’s constraints. Just changes them. It isn’t as easy as it looks. I’ve just done 4 years in vans and trust me there’s two sides to it. Same as living in a house. Horses for courses. You’re still living as part of the system in a van, just in a van. Hope you’re circumstances improve : have improved.

I can't remember a time in all my 60 years living in the UK when my choices were so limited and the cost of living so onerous. The 2008 financial crash, 13 years of austerity & Brexit have made life far harder. I can only see things getting worse.

Life keeps getting worse as the years go on, it's part of the big plan by the powers that be. So much pressure & stress on people nowadays, no more communal societies that people felt they belonged to. The amount of homicides & suicides has risen greatly since 2000. Van life though hard as it is at least gives people some sense of freedom & control over their lives.

Yeah but aires aren’t full of people living full times in vans and not moving. Which is what the vast majority of uk van dwellers do in my experience. 4 years in a van opened my eyes to all sorts of things, and a lot of it was negative regarding van dwellers.

@@willpolrthere are places (like Bristol) where many vandwellers don't move but in most places vandwellers move at least monthly & usually daily. For most vandwellers finding water & toilets is difficult &, for some, once they've found them are reluctant to stray from them. A network of aires is one solution to this. I lived in Bristol for a while & found no water other than bottled water from supermarkets, toilets were locked at night & had no facility for emptying a tank.
@willpolr
@willpolr 2 ай бұрын
@@alanhat5252 have you measured how often they move then? No you haven’t. A lot of vans move for the day and return to the same spot at night. Finding toilets is difficult? Have you heard of supermarkets and petrol stations? It’s not even vaguely difficult. Finding water is actually easy if you use your brain. At a push you can also get water from a supermarket. And don’t say it’s expensive, that’s nothing to do with it. Why should you have facilities for emptying your tanks? You’re not on a campsite. Honestly I think a lot of van dwellers are entitled AF. Why should anyone provide facilities for vans if the vans aren’t paying? You can’t have it all.
@willpolr

@@alanhat5252 if you go to a campsite you can pay to empty your tank without staying at the campsite. No campsites around Bristol? Again you want it all but don’t want to make the effort or pay. Hmmm doesn’t seem very reasonable to me.

I live in a flat in central London that costs me a fortune each month, currently converting a van at the minute as I’ve lived out of one whilst in Oz. These people are wealthier than some others as they have a community spirit, in London you barely know who your neighbours are and pay a fortune for it. Community and freedom is what life is all about, just a shame the old scroungers in the sheltered housing don’t see it the same way
@willpolr

Community. There is no community of people living in vans. Is there a community of people living in houses? No they just live in houses. As for freedom, I wish you luck with that in this country. There isn’t much freedom living in a van in the uk.

I can see where the meanwhile sites come in handy, people who work full time can afford this and the security it entails, and hopefully not music blasting until 4am, however, there should be water and electric supply and shower facilities thrown in. Like the gent said 'the land is owned by the council' and costs peanuts to run. So meet everyone halfway?

Make it too comfortable and at £25 a week they won't be able to keep up with demand. In direct competition with market forces. @@willpolrtrue but there's nuances, for instance it's easier to hide unpleasant behaviours in a house. Also, people pushed out of society often end up out of housing too, some take the step from there into vans. (Only one in the film was there through direct & current choice). The reasons for being pushed out of society are widely variable but some can be mental health issues, some of which manifest in odd behaviours. For 14 years we've had a government that refuses to deal with subtleties & refuses to deal with the roots of problems.

@@alanhat5252 absolutely nothing to do with van dwellers taking the piss though. I’m sorry but in my experience the vast majority of people living in vans have very nice vans that cost a fair sum of money and are trying to live outside society in some way whilst living smack bang in the middle of society! Nuances you say? More like word play. Homelessness and van dwelling are not the same thing. And to labour the “aires” point. Aires were 100% not conceived for people living in vehicles, so it’s not relevant. Aires are for holiday makers on long journeys. Out of towns on holiday routes. You don’t see aires in towns. Not a very good documentary to be honest. The majority of those interviewed chose to change their previous way of life and sold up to move into their vehicle. The couple who state that they are desperate to save money but then shop in Waitrose, confuses me! We live in a converted truck and work full time and are doing so because it’s an easier way to save money fast to buy land, it’s our choice to do so but it’s not a forever choice. I feel like the production team have missed out the real people that live in vehicles not through choice as they are the ones that should have been interviewed for this production.

Funny how under tory goverment here we are again the modern day peace convoy glorified New age travlers yet again people are put under extream pressure they resort to this way of life and rightly so but I'm sure this goverment will be at it again making this life style very very hard. People must be strong this time !

Its cheaper to live in a vam or caravan motorhome but the government will raise fuel, road tax and come out with new ways to make it so expensive by the introduction of a living tax, you know this government wants its slice of everything.

@@alanhat5252 yes I intend too, but my vote won't matter because unfortunately labour will get in and they will be worse than the shower we've got in. This country is fucked, the damage has been done, no government could right what's gone on, even if they were in for 10 years.

Omg those women moaners. I used to live around Albany green and there were always a dozen or so vans. To be it brightened the area, they were never any trouble. But there was a 'group' that called themselves Montpellier action group. They went round putting stickers and notice saying don't park here. 95% of us didn't mind at all. But u can't please all .....

How many Van Dwellers are Bristolians ? Since our Woke Council made us a City of Sanctuary dossers and graffiti artists have flocked to the City from elsewhere.

completely agree. i’m a born and bred bristolian and want nothing more than to live in the city where I grew up and to be around family but the cost of living in the city has skyrocketed for the exact reasons you mentioned above. one of my options is to renovate and live in a van. it’s made worse by all the students coming here and staying after university. the council should prioritise the needs of Bristolians. i’m sure there are many bristolians who are living in vans, not because they want to, but because it is the only way to stay in the city that they love. The rest are just cultural vipers who have turned the city into a woke, artistic shithole.
