I did some voluntary work in Knowle and helped manage a website in Staple Hill that was part of a regeneration scheme. This was all about a decade ago, and Knowle is still under regeneration? This is taking longer to regenerate than after The Doctor's first regeneration in the new season of Doctor Who.

I was born in Bristol in 1957 and lived there until the late 1970s. It is rather dispiriting to see exactly the same 5 areas of the city in deprivation as when I was there. Perhaps the most depressing is Barton Hill as I watched that whole area being redeveloped - including the building of the tower blocks - with the aim of improving quality of life. It is difficult to imagine what the many city leaders of the last 50 years have been doing. Whatever it is, perhaps they should stop it and re-think, because it doesn't seem to be doing anything useful..

@@ukexplored I quite often park my truck near here. I go out in estate pubs all over the country and mix with the people. Get yourself out at night in some of these places and have a beer 🍺 I’ve been drinking in rough places for years and never had any problems. Or walking around at night. I used to see a woman in Gorse Hill Swindon too, another one of your dangerous areas. Yes the streets are dirty and skanky, but you shouldn’t be afraid of scallies starting fires and running about on motorcross bikes. They’re just bored

​@@darkmark937I'm glad you said it, I used to live in knowle and I would say it's like most areas you have good and bad parts these areas are forgotten about by government and council's which is why you have problems there. One thing I would say is there is more of a sense of community people looking out for each other whereas more exclusive areas seem to be lacking. As for the pubs around there you only get trouble if you are looking for it.

From Hartcliffe here grew up here my whole childhood its quite bad in terms of crime ive had family members murdered, robbed the drug problem is really bad most people here dont even care about getting arrested for dealing and just do it out front of the police. Schools are quite bad both my secondary and primary schools were marked so bad by ofstead they were close to shutting down. There is also a weird postcode war between knowle and Hartcliffe. The council in terms of maintenance are useless for instance my family had a hole in roof for 6 months which led to leaks in the attic. The worse part is these are only a few issues with the area and the council largely overlooks the area.

Thanks for the reminder of these places in Bristol. I've always lived in and around Bristol, and these areas are always been known to be like this, and should not be ignored. Good you mentioned about the regeneration projects, I hope they continue, although it is taking years and years to being changes. Nice there are communities within them and that is so important for the people to be part of it. Thank you for bringing attention to these areas and I hope improvements can be seen in years to come.

Had a little chuckle when you said that Bristol City Council could be doing more to help Lawrence Weston. We have a Mayor, pretty much the first thing he did when appointed was to award his own office a huge increase in funding. BCC spent over £1,000,000 rebranding the council headquarters, formerly known as The Council House, now called City Hall. They've overseen redevelopment of our dire entertainment centre, formerly called The Colston Hall, you've guessed it, that had to have a name change as well, now called The Beacon, that was supposed to cost about £40,000,000, but ended up somewhere nearer to £140,000,000, and it's still too small to attract any top acts, endless bus and cycle lanes along with a LEZ have made it completely inaccessible. Then to put a big rotten stinking cherry on top of it all, they wasted over £10,000,000 (yes, ten million of our pounds) on a feasibility study for an underground transport system. So yes, BCC could do a whole load to help poorer areas, if they weren't blowing our money on insane vanity projects.

13% of Bristol wanted a mayor, a clear indicator that 87% didn't want one. However, you had George fergeson like it or not, and he made himself a multimillionaire in the process while helping none of the areas mentioned in this video. Marvin Reese wasn't supposed to win and become mayor, the jobs were created for torys so they could over ride labour held councils. It didn't work.

Bristol no longer has an elected Mayor, rebranding of the Council House to City Hall didn't cost over £1m, BCC's contributions to the Beacon's refurbishment were £84m not £140m, LEZ was a central government requirement doesn't make it or anywhere else in the centre 'inaccessible' at all. Bristol would enormously benefit from a metro system, pedestrians frequently move quicker than busses during commuting hours, sadly after the last 14 years of central government chaos and ruination there's no money any such project, the exchequer is effectively bankrupt. All of the sums mentioned are a drop in the ocean to put right what has been put wrong since 2010 alone, it will take at least a generation and tens of billions of public funding just for Bristol.

It looks like most of the British people don't seem to take a pride in their living environment. In this video even the occupied houses seem to be surrounded with garbage, the front yard seems full of garbage, I mean what can be simpler that removing it and taking it to a dump. Plant a few trees and some greens, get a can of paint and refresh outside their homes with a new lick of paint, just small little things that will make a difference. You can not expect the city do everything for you. You have to chip in a little bit too. Cities are mismanaged for decades. I know these are poor areas but surely they can spend a few dollars on their homes and make them a bit more pleasant.

Sadly not everyone has a car and can't afford to hire a skip. Also the 💩 in the street is rarely the residents. I lived in LW and many, many times cars and vans pulled into the cul de sac where I lived, Quarry Lane, to dump their crap in and around our bins. Frequently from the houses just yards away. Also happens in London especially Homerton, Hackney, E9.

I totally agree, just a small amount of effort could make such a difference. Unfortunately i suspect some of the occupants of these properties spend nearly all of their money on drink and drugs. It's a mindset to want to live in a decent and green area, many of these people get enough money to be able to do this but the mindset goes once addiction sets in, some never have it in the first place.

When both your parents are on smack and your kept out of school at 6 years old so you can go and score you will realise painting the front of your house is not a major priority like food or electricity

I live not far from Barton Hill. I regularly walk through there during the day and night, and have never seen any trouble or felt at risk. I'd say it was far, far better than the other areas you mentioned.

i live in barton hill i've been here for 17 years. i've been attacked numerous times and the police aren't interested in pursuing any of it. if it happened in clifton it would be a different story...

I live in Barton Hill. I once lived in a town house next to a lake. It was a house but never a home. I have a stable career and acknowledge my privileges but the street I live in in Barton Hill feels the most safe and community centred place I have ever lived in. It is a joy to live here.

I lived in Barton Hill 8 years ago, for about 5 years and I found it to be plenty comfortable and never felt unsafe. It has a couple of great parks and church road that runs through it has eveything you need. Someone mentioned the population is mostly Somali, so no late night alcohol related disturbances and it was generally safe to walk around, day or night. I found Easton was far more treturous a place to be.

Easton definitely used to be rough but it's been gentrified to fuck over the past few years - you're much more likely to get into a fight with a yoga mum over a parking space than anything more unsavoury.

The main problem is that Brits who cant afford to go private do not have access to essential mental health treatment on the NHS. A friend recently had to pay 700£ (luckily he was able to) to get a diagnosis & treatment for a debilitating mental health condition that he tried to get the NHS to help him with for years. Someone else went to a gp about depression and insomnia and the gp prescribed pills without any proper psychological assesment, rendering the condition even worse than before. If people with mental disorders incl substance use cannot get effective treatment then not much good can come out council innitiatives.

We have plenty of the Cornish style houses in Bath we also have the metal clad houses. On each corner except the east side of bath you’ll find them in the council estates. They were built with paper thin hollow internal walls.

Bristol has a bizarre reputation for being a bit sort of of hip and a cross between posh and hippyish (largely due to tv shows only ever showing the suspension bridge, the waterfront and then random schools) but having lived in and around it for 2 decades, I feel informed enough to say it is largely a run down dirty hole of a city

I live in Barton hill. In my eyes it's a bit scruffy, but a hidden gem really. I moved here 6 years ago, there are loads of places to take your dog for a walk, most of the drug problems are from wealthier people coming into the area to score drugs, use in their cars, then dumping their litter out the window.l and leaving. The predominant Somali population means that we have a t-total community, meaning no late night disturbances as the pubs empty. You can go here and walk safely in the evenings and see all the kids in the kids park playing with their families. It's got a real diverse proper community. As I said, its a hidden gem.

I've lived in Bristol for years and am familiar with Withywood Hartcliffe Knowle and Bedminster. Some of the houses are really nice and the people are very friendly. The council don't seem to be bothered anymore about cutting the grass verges and cleaning the gutters and pavements or do they cut the grasses in the parks as often as they used to which would make a big difference to the look of the places I'm not familiar with Lawrence Weston or Barton Hill so can't comment about those areas.i have never felt afraid when walking around these areas. Even at night. I did enjoy this video.. Thanks

There are two Lawrence Westons. There are the flats and there are the side streets going up the hills, where most council houses have been sold, divided between owners occupiers and privately rented accommodation. Lots of wonderful green areas , Kingsweston Park is a gem. The area could do with a pub!

That may be very true. I'm guessing your a Bristolian like me. I was a kid delivering newspapers in the Easton and Barton Hill areas back in the late 60s and it was clean and tidy and safe. And in the 70s and 80s I had friends in Knowle and the woods and it was never that untidy and people were on the up. But family life definitely has changed. Noticeably selfishness, confrontational attitudes and laziness on mass. Drugs are most definitely to blame, not just in Bristol but everywhere it go's unchecked, take a walk through the Bearpit you could be in Philadelphia! Mass immigration from the small boats ain't gonna help agreed, but we gotta sort ourselves out first and that can be really difficult where drugs have a grip.

As a old Bristolian all these areas were once filled with working men and there families, from the docks to the railways, proud grafters living in very tight communities. All are now dustbins of non British, with many British single mothers with no outlook but live on benefits whilst getting covered in very expensive tattoos as a fashion accessory. Few have any expectations or outlooks apart from having more kids and finding cheap drugs. Barton Hill is now part of the Middle East, one was being interviewed looking for free computers, she had 7 kids living in a two bed flat, some having more than that with their three wifes, all on benefits. Once being a gas engineer visited a three bed off the Bath Road for the council that had three cookers, three wives and eleven kids again all on benefits with a cash in the hand taxi driver husband.

Clifton still clings to its old "posh" image but that's a wraith of the past,it's a dump now. The poshest bit of Bristol is Upper Easton now. If you don't believe me go to Cafe 5 up at the top of Bruce Rd by the Bristol to Bath cycle track and hear the staggering conversations around you. A different world. Working on my master's degree and my job in bio-technology research and my plan to trek through South America. And it's a great Cafe too!

I was brought up in Bristol, my father grew up in Knowle West. It's always been the same names in lists like these. And, for a change, I can't blame the council. There's been a kind of reverse snobbery (especially in Hartcliffe) for decades. You would often hear about unprovoked aggression against police officers, rocks being thrown at fire engines, even plausible and believable stories about petrol bombs thrown at ambulances. And, years ago, social workers would flat out refuse to do home visits in these areas. I did as you suggested in the vid ... spent my money somewhere where I could feel comfortable so I don't know for sure (as I haven't lived in Bristol for 20 years) but it wouldn't surprise me if the council just gave up trying. I know I did. If people want to have some sort of pride in attacking folk that try to improve (my definition of "improve", of course )their quality of life, if they are defending the quality of life that they are so proud of that they defend it with violence, I am quite happy to leave them to it.

Can blame the government all you want but end of the day it’s down to the people to be clean, tidy and take pride in their area. I lived on an estate in London, every morning I’d be up for work and walk past everyone in their dressing gowns smoking weed and come back from work and they are still there smoking weed. Doors always getting put through by police because of anti social behaviour. Were loads of jobs available as well round us. It’s an excuse “Tory scum did it” 🙄. It’s lazy people that buy into the culture nothing else.

I am aware of many of the problems with Withywood and Hartcliffe and many of these have been associated with these difficulties. As for Knowle West - it's had a mixed issue some progress there has been made. It's a little bit of some hopes. Hartcliffe has had some difficulty. As well!

I live in Hartclife. The road I am on is quiet and my kids play out front. With other children. It would be nice if there was more activities for kids to do. Like a community club or something. I was also filmed on the rich house poor house TV show. Swapping with a rich family. Which you see lots of trolly stacked up in our street a lot. I’d love to move out of this area though and move somewhere on the outskirts of Bristol with nice views. I have done walks with my dog on my channel walking through hartcliffe and there is some nice parks here and the scenery can be nice in the summer

I lived in Withywood early 90's . I was one of three people in my street that was employed. Many Heroin addicts around back then.

I have lived in and around Bristol for over 35 years, I have driven through these areas over that time and haven't seen any noticeable improvements.

I think it's worth noting that not all types of crime happen most in the deprived areas. For example the Gloucester Road area is generally safe & not a deprived area but because of the many shops and shoppers there's plenty of theft, the occasional bag snatching, and even a ram raid where a car smashed through into a co-op and a staff member was hit with a weapon. Once a couple of guys went into the local hardware store, took bolt cutters, and cut a bicycle cable outside, walking off with the bike in broad daylight. On the other hand secluded areas like a few of the cycle paths, and small parks near the M32, have been the scene of a number of muggings, assaults, and nuisance behaviour. Gang trouble would be more likely in deprived areas but there's not been a huge amount and I don't think it compares to some bigger UK cities (eg Ldn, Brum, Lpl, Manc, Glasg). Generally places like Hartcliffe, Knowle W, etc are pretty decent as long as you're vigilant and don't act stupid.

When you look at this as other posters have said the big issue is the people who live in LW as an example. High unemployment, yet a short walk to Avonmouth there are hundreds of well paid jobs at all the huge new warehouses that are there. The dumping of rubbish in gardens and communal areas. When no one, even the local council and councillors don't care about and make excuses for criminality then it brings to other decent folk down as well. It didn't used to be like this LW was always home to working class but they had pride. Same in other areas you mention but the overall issue is Bristol City Council who would rather spend on making the M32 into a bus only road than investing in helping people by attracting well paid jobs and ensuring everyone has the best opportunities no matter where they started from. We need to raise aspirations of people not reward the feckless and condemm others to have to live at the side of those who won't help themselves

Those houses with the tiles on one half are called Cottage houses. I grew up in one in Withywood. There seem to be loads in that Hartcliffe/Withywood. They were built to save money.

Bristol city fell into the hands of talentless architect's and corrupt planners since the war. Big contractor's fill their pockets parasiting Bristol and I'm sure those in planning benefit from it financially, otherwise we might have had a truly loved and beautiful city, and that could only have happened if we had been determined to employ respectful architect's with talent. There are small pocket's of Bristol with a hint of it's ancient Soul we can still proudly point tourist's to, aplogising when overshadowed by tower's of a growing concete jungle and swathes of tarmac, potholes, and badly laid pavement's. George Ferguson you were at least that much better than the present day Mayor. Sadly the city has been taken by woke ideologies and this mental illness may never be cured.

I've seen a few of your videos now and they are very inaccurate. I actually live in one of those high rises in Hartcliffe and it is an extremely friendly block where neighbors bend over backwards to help each other. Instead of sofas most people have plants on their balconies. Most of my neighbours in the block work full time as do I. I note you really go out of your way to video sofas and overgrown alleyways to gain effect and you ignore all the positives like the beautiful surrounding hills and the fact we have a local farm! I totally get that the atea is deprived and has struggles, but what good does it do to only concentrate on the bits that need a clean up as surely that creates even more stigma which is unhelpful.

I've seen the Council try to improve these areas. They put a new play area for the children and the "Young adults" went in at night, poured petrol on it all, and torched it.

I currently live in Barton hill. It's fascinating to hear these stats because generally it feels safe. I like talking with my neighbours and I don't really see any anti-social behaviour like fighting or intimidation. Definitely less scary than when I lived in Stokes Croft 8 years ago, and that was supposedly on the way to being gentrified. There is noticeable drug use. Drug littler and people using in the parks. We are very central though and it's a high density population. But, all of this is said from my perspective as a white middle class person with a fairly stable income (self-employed). So I'm sheltered from the poverty that is reported. This really exists in the high density tower blocks prominent in the area. So it's really a tale of two places.

I lived in Barton Hill for 4 years and it is a bit scruffy, but didn’t feel dangerous day or night. Didn’t see much drug use or drunks. Great transport connection (via bus and train) and Temple Meads station is about a 15-20 min walk… it’s quite a spooky walk at night though as it’s very dark and empty.

I grew up in South Bristol, and although it had problems, it was generally safe and clean with good education. I left 20 years ago, but I hardly ever go to Bristol anymore. The area is rundown, shops have closed, full of beggars and illegals. I’m ashamed at how the government has treated this city

I've just started watching your video and I need to pick something out. When you talk about Withywood (where I unfortunately live atm) you're actually showing a house up in Bishopsworth (a speeding car crashed into a bus that went into the building). 3.03 is the exact time. Bishopsworth is an area that is a lot better than Withywood or Hartcliffe. That was just one unlucky family, that lost their house in a freak accident.

Damn, yeah I hate to hear about accidents like that. My bad with the area, honestly, one of the things that surprises me most is that between Google, Apple Maps, and pulling up council boundaries I always get so many different border lines for areas and can't always be 100% sure where some areas stop/start.

I know where I live, and it's just one from what's listed 😉 It's very easy to get lost where boundaries begin and end. But I really enjoyed the video, shows what the areas are like and what to expect. I actually live in one of the houses mentioned, the one with the mansard roof. It's actually name is a Cornish Type 1 building, originally build after the war from prefabricated concrete panels. A lot of these buildings needed to be "repaired" due to concrete failing over time. The whole structure would be suspended, and bricks and a cavity build around it.

new sub, great video - seems like a lot of the issues here are blight/trash. here in the US, we have free trash pickup and haul away for larger items. does England have that service? it really helps our suburban communities look nice/tidy and that, in turn, contributes to overall citizen satisfaction

Hi there, different local councils have different rules for bulky items being picked up - in Bristol they charge a small amount, I think £25 to pick up an item - and sadly that's too much for most people as they prefer to just dump it in the street. I think there is a good arguement for making it free if it cleans up the neighborhood - but I'll never be in charge! 😂

@@ukexplored Bristol resident here, you get one or two free bulky items picked up yearly anything else is then charged i believe, as for most of these area's they are mostly south Bristol area's excluding avonmouth and Barton hill being more central, fact is this is not a problem exclusive to Bristol most city's will have several residents that just do not care about the state they live in and yes this affects a whole area but sadly its a handful of residents that ruins are lovely city's

The issue with LW is not the flats but the people who live in them. Flats like those, low-rise, spaced out with grass in between, in any developed country would be clean, well-maintained, lived in by indigenous inhabitants who work for their own living and pay taxes. And they would not be depositing sofas, kiddies trampolines from Argos, laughing gas canisters, and other detritus in communal areas of the state - the stuff doesn’t land there by magic. And there’s a reason why many of the residents are choosing to “live in poverty” (aka living a Life of Riley on the dole, housing benefits and “the disability”). You reap what you sow, and LW shows that off perfectly, as do most of the other sink estates and modern-day slums that you show.

LW was built to house single mothers and is now home to lots of gypsies and criminals. Surprised how bad Vincent Close is now but not surprised by the 💩in Humberstan Walk and the rest of the flats next to Roman Ruins. Still sad though that decent people have no possibility of escaping .

"Tower in a park" housing fails to be desirable in almost every western country. Think about it, you have the combination of the suburban location with little amenities, public transit or jobs nearby, plus you live in a cramp apartment with no private garden. Honestly though, with the housing crisis, these people would be living on the streets if not for these flats. So at least they function to provide low-cost housing in some capacity.

I was brought up in Knowle West, born in 60 left in 1987, it was a poor community, but we had parks, open spaces, community halls, social clubs, all sorts, as kids we had freedom, what do the kids have today..I'd go back to my childhood any day, wouldn't want to be a kid there today!

Interesting video. Do you have a link to the govt site on the definition of deprived? I think the endless sofas dumped in gardens and on the street are due to the stupid recycling policies of the local council. Nobody is going to pay £60 or whatever the going rate is for a council collection. The high rise flats were deemed to be a bad idea many years ago and yet, amazingly, in the Great Reset we are suddenly building them again. I was a bit surprised at your figures on benefits because I thought that far more people were claiming them in these areas. (I'm Bristol born).

I will do a better job of listing my sources in the descriptions in future. I got all my data from the Bristol Gov site and census data. I think you can find most of the deprivation information from this page and the indices report; www.bristol.gov.uk/council-and-mayor/statistics-census-information/deprivation. Bristol council also publishes individual reports for each ward, which is where I was getting the screenshots from.

Can a 1 800 Junk truck or city truck go by and pick up the junk . Anything in the front garden will be taken so remove it. In the US all junk is picked up by the city.

Most residents are hoping scrap guys will pick their stuff up, or honestly, they don’t care either way. You need to arrange collections though, and most councils require a small fee for bulky items, which again, seems to be a barrier for a lot of people.

I do not understand a lot of what I see here. What does being poor and deprived have to do with furniture and supermarket trollies left in gardens and on the street? What does being poor have to do with allowing a garden to turn into a morass of weeds and garbage? What does being poor have to do with parking motor vehicles anywhere but on the street or in a driveway? In my own lifetime what I have seen are council estates (projects in the U.S.) that were built as decent if not opulent places to live. They were clean, functional, safe, reasonable places to live, but the inhabitants trashed them and abused them in every way possible. Not even trees, shrubs, and grass survived in these places. Screen doors and window screens were usually the first to be destroyed. Why??? Why do these people trash out and destroy anything nice that is given to them??? They destroy anything nice that is given to them every single time. What is the explanation for this?? The worst ones in the bunch will always try to thwart anyone else who is trying to live decently, get an education, and improve their lives. This is a problem with some human beings worldwide, not just in the U.K. I have seen projects (council estates) built and ruined within a year after these people occupy them. The people I feel truly sorry for are the decent ones who are clean, law abiding, and who want a better quality of life, but because of their incomes cannot escape these cesspools. I have to conclude that it is impossible to help many of these people worldwide, and I have to wonder why governments throw money at them knowing most of the people in such areas have no ambition to improve themselves and their lives. I repeat I have seen this problem in both the UK and the U.S., and I am sure the exact same problem exists in other countries as well.
