Walmart used to stay open 24hrs, but after the pandemic they now close at midnight. Toilet seat covers are paper disposable covers that you place on the toilet seat before sitting. A lot of Americans don't even go in the grocery stores anymore. We now order groceries on-line and either have them delivered or we schedule a time to pick them up. It's all about convenience.

When she said toilet seat covers she didn't mean the lid. She was talking about paper sanitary covers that you can put on the seat to sit on and then flush them when you are done. They are in a box on the wall in most US toilet stalls. I'm jealous of (i think it's) Japan where their sanitary covers are automated and just automatically change the sanitary cover when you flush. So nice.

The bathroom thing I don’t get, yeah there’s a large gap under the door for multiple reasons but between the stall door, it’s very small. Majority of the time there isn’t even a gap or it’s so small that no one can see in unless they walk up to the door and squint to see in, which would be very odd. Basic etiquette is to not do that because you’re a creep if you do.

At most supermarkets we have cashiers and baggers. The cahiers are supposed to ring up the items while the bagger bags all of the items correctly (heavy items on the bottom, bags not overfilled or too heavy). Doesn't always work out that way 🙄 The only shop locally that bags as they ring is walmart and i rarely get a bag filled properly. I prefer having a sole bagging person. But now i usually just use the self checkout. So much easier.

Crazy how people from other countries talk about the sales taxes in the U.S. it’s not really a big deal. Goods are shipped from all around the country or from another country - and every state, county and sometimes city have different tax percentages. And it would be beyond labor intensive for every store to label each item precisely. As long as the consumer has a rough idea or if they’re capable of basic math it really doesn’t matter. Much ado about nothing. The U.S. is massive. Think of each state like a country in Europe. Also the tax rate might change on Jan 1st or July 1st. Or a particular city might levy a special tax at anytime. The narrator might be annoyed by this. . But you would think that she might have bothered to understand or explain these facts.

Excellent point. Take the Philadelphia area, for example. Major newspapers, radio stations, mailers, and TV stations impact 3 states --Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. And the same in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. Not to mention on-line purchases, where many of us are accustomed to the web sites calculating sales taxes for our particular state. @@JustMe-dc6ks

Here's a word of caution to non-Americans: if you think America is a panacea, paradise, where they have everything and life is wealth and opulence like in the Hollywood movies, you're going to be greatly disappointed when you get here. If you think America sucks and everything is awful, you're going to be very pleasantly surprised when you get here.

Pump then pay for gas used to be a thing a long time ago, but it's been gone from the us for 20 years. Walmart used to be 24 hours in most places, but they have been going away from that since 2020. Fast food restaurants have been going away from 24 hour stores as well, they generally keep one store in each area open 24/7 and close the rest after 11 pm so if you want Mcdonalds at 2 am you have to drive across town to get it.

@tryaluck okay, now you got me curious lol. So i just checked my order history and i bought perfume in 2001, deoderant and some VHS movies in 2002, a pie plate and some books in 2003, some CDs in 2004, etc. So i googled it and they started selling more than books in 2001. Which was really cool because that means i made my first purchase right when they expanded. It was also cool looking into my first purchases. I remember the movies but i don't remember that purfume at all. Thanks for making me look further into it. 😊

At grocery stores, I usually use the self-checkout, but on the occasions where I use the cashier lane, I have never been to a store in this millenium where the cashier didn't scan an item and then immediately put it in a bag. By the time I punch in my pin, I am done. She is referencing procedures they used during the last millenium when they had cashiers and bag boys, but even so, by the time I settled the payment, my bags were ready. Also, I live in Oregon, so we don't have sales tax: the price marked is the price, and we have tax treaties with Washington and California, so I show my driver's license, and I don't have to pay the sales tax there either.

Yeah. Southern California and Arizona don’t have a lot of insects or arachnids outside during the day, because it’s too dry and hot for them. I didn’t have to worry about mosquitoes in Arizona. We do have scorpions which are arachnids, but they only come out after dark when no one is out in nature on hiking trails (unless they are looking for scorpions with a black light, because they glow under black light.)

Yes, there are bugs in Los Angeles: many types of spiders, ants, honeybees/bumble bees/wasps, lady bugs, gnats, cockroaches, potato bugs, silverfish, earwigs, beetles, snails, slugs, mosquitoes, mosquito hawks, variety of worms, fleas, ticks and others, that I'm sure I'm forgetting. You're just less likely to seem most of them inside businesses or apartments/condos. Single family homes, on the other hand, you may see a lot of them inside and outside your home.

Lav, my children grew up in Miami. When they visited relatives in Latin America, they were amazed to see flies for the first time. Common flies that may be attracted to food. They had never seen one. Keep in mind that in US we a have screens in all windows (and some doors) to keep flying things out. It was funny to see them looking at flies like They were F15 combat planes.

24/7 stores are less common after COVID, especially Walmart whose absence from the 24/7 retail space still feels like a punch in the gut. But other options still exist. Usually drug stores (pharmacies), convenience stores, diners and breakfast chains, and most chain gyms are open 24/7. It can be nice if you get a random chest pain at night and want to do a quick run to the pharmacy to get an aspirin or run it off on the treadmill at the gym. A lot of businesses will also have after-hours services and security. My local dry cleaners, for example, has secured after-hours drop off lockers for clothes after they officially close their front office and they process my clothes by the time I wake up (a few hours later). Stuff like this is pretty typical in mid-size cities and suburban America. In the largest cities, a lot more businesses are 24/7 or very nearly 24/7.

She didn’t explain some of these clearly. The toilet seat covers she’s talking about are paper things you put on top of the seat. It’s supposed to be sanitary but I doubt a thin piece of paper between your butt and the seat does anything. The stores open late really just depends on where you live. The bigger the city, the later the stores are open (generally). And it also depends on which store or chain. The thing about bugs in LA is really true. One of the only good things about living there. But they do have mosquitoes and spiders, just not a lot of other bugs. It’s a place where you actually can have windows without screens in America. Here in Texas I would never leave a window open without a screen.

It depends on the type of store/business. Gas stations and Walmarts and targets and some fast food restaurants and corner/convenience stores aka “drug stores” were open either 24 hours or until midnight or 1am, but most still don’t have enough staff members to be open late into the night after the pandemic.

I live in L.A. and compared to the 10 different places I've lived across the U.S. bugs are not an issue here. Outdoor dining everywhere and I have never had problems with bugs around my food. The Mediterranean climate of Los Angeles features long, dry summers with minimal rainfall, which significantly reduces breeding grounds for insects like mosquitoes.

"No bugs, no flies, no spiders" well.. at one house with a huge thriving garden, sure we get pests. Spider season helps. I see the flies get caught in the webs in the front/backyard and never encounter them in the house. Down the road, sister's place.. no garden, no flies, no spiders, no bugs. Less than 1 kilometer away, just concrete desolation. No snacks just growing around the house, trade offs.
