The depth charges were developed by the British Royal Navy during WWI which used a hydrostatic valve for preselecting the depth at which it would explode. Most of the time an explosion would force a sub to surface due to damages to instruments or joints from the shock wave alone.

Depth charges explode under water. An explosion on land has everywhere to expand. Under water, water gives explosions nowhere to expand, so destructive waves go a long way. They threaten to cause subs to pinch, buckle, and fail, so to preserve ship and crew, the crew is forced to bring the ship to the water's surface.

Depth charges create concussive waves in water. You drop explosives into the water, that water is gonna get pushed away from that explosion and hopefully hit the sub with a water hammer. Buckle the hull plates, pop leaks, damage components. There are a number of reasons a submarine would surface due to being battered by depth charges.
@chrisjarvis22878 күн бұрын
Germany built 1,162 Subs during WWII.
@UnknownWatcherx8 күн бұрын
since you asked, a depth charge works by taking advantage of the fact that, sense water is denser than air the force of the explosion doesn't travel as far, but within its range the force is amplified. If a depth charge goes off near a sub, it drastically messes or destroyed its components. If they don't surface, there is a high chance they will sink and everyone will die. Even with the enemy nearby, it is still a better option to surface than stay under water. In some cases, that literally have no choice but to surface as the depth change wrecks the pressure equilibrium within the sub. I am sure there a people in this chat more knowledgeable than me on the subject, please add detail or corrections as need so L3WG has a better understanding. Thank you.
@hazardousroo3 күн бұрын
As I understand, the pressure wave from depth charges is not only effective for causing hull ruptures, but it can destroy sensitive or exposed components even if it doesn't buckle the hull. The propellers (screws) are particularly vulnerable to the explosions IIRC, and without those a sub is as good as dead.

Water's resistance to compression leads to underwater explosions having huge and powerful shock waves. When a ship is on the surface it's subjected to only a small portion of the shock wave, but a submerged sub takes the full force of it with the water on the other side playing the part of the hard place. Leaving the sub in the middle as the most compressible object. Depth charges are simply large explosives rigged to go off at the typical depth of a sub. They do a good job of outright destroying subs, as well as causing them to surface because of damage, or to try to get away. If depth charges are going off, the best place to be is on the surface, and subs of this era were much faster on the surface where they actually spent most of their time.

A depth charge is set to explode at a certain depth or water pressure that corresponds to that depth. The deeper the sub is the closer the depth charge has to be for a kill. That is why a lot of U-Boats had to surface. Probably just close enough to split some seams. Not something easily patched from the inside, so surface and live.

Enigma code was a code that was programmed into a typing machine with a key word. Each letter of the key word would translate a letter to a separate code alphabet. You could have 2 of the same letter of the alphabet next to each other in the coded message, but they would not be the same letter in the message because it would have been coded by a different alphabet code. Alan Turing and a band of cryptographers put an amazing amount of work to create a huge decoding machine, but every morning they had to scrap because a new code word was programmed into Enigma. What the downfall of the code was was two words that were the same words at the end of every German message: Heil Hitler. Were it not for that, Germans might have won WWII. There are some good movies about Enigma to watch. 4 I've found were: _Bletchly Park_ (the place where the cryptographers secretly worked on Enigma) _Enigma_ _The Imitation Game_ _Code Enigma_ The first was a documentary The other three are Hollywood movies and thus stylized a bit. Still, the history of Enigma is worth reading about.

So I used to not believe that these craft were real, but what is going on is all this "fusion" research is just high energy weapons to shoot these craft down. Think about it, how long would it take to shoot down a balloon? 🤔 My guess is a half an hour? You don't understand the military, they don't shoot, that is a last resort. We had Chinese spy balloons fly across the entire country before they decided to shoot the next one down. For something to withstand the fire power of the Navy for a half an hour, isn't a balloon!

Submarine pressure hulls are among the strongest structures man has ever devised; every 10m (33ft) of depth adds an additional 1 bar (~15psi) to the hull _in all directions..._ and WWII U-boats (depending on model) could go as deep as 200-250 or so meters before being in severe danger (if not certainty) of being crushed. There are a lot of safety margins added in, so most vessels never get close to that so-called "crush depth" if they have any choice in the matter; the figure is an estimate, based on known material strength, but if you value your life, and the lives of those aboard the vessel, you don't test it! The billionaire designer of the submersible that gave tours of the _HMS Titanic_ scoffed at those safety limits, and look where it got him...
