The chorus line „Ich schwimmte, schwamm und schwomm (…)“ is a good example of how Dendemans lyrics work in german. Translated it is just „I swam, swam and swam“, but in german Dendemann uses three different forms of simple past which are not all grammatically correct („Ich schwamm“ is the correct form to say „I swam“) but are sort of everyday language/slang. Every „Ich schwimmte, schwamm und schwomm“ is like a little humorous wink to german language, which always is an important part of Dendes style.

If you want more from Dendemann you should definitely check out from his his work in the 90ies as Eins Zwo “Danke, gut” and “Ich so, Er so”. His more recent significance stems from his work as artist in residence for the German late night show “Neo Magazin Royale” around 2014/15. His incredible skills as a live rapper really come forth and his live band is amazingly tight as well. You can check out the history of German rap episode. Could be interesting for you to get a kind of collage of glimpses into the development of the genre in Germany. Love your reactions

I listen to german rap since around ´97 and Dende is one of these old school legends from this time but he never was recognized in the main stream, unlike others like "Absolute Beginner", "5 Sterne Deluxe" or "Massive Töne". Great reaction to one of Germany's best rappers. He's the guy that really brought me into German rap music back in the late 90's with his band EinsZwo (Dendemann and DJ Rabauke). His lyrics are so full of references and word play that it's really hard to translate. But you did a great job of getting the gist of it. Btw: "(living) like a maggot in bacon" (German: "leben wie eine Made im Speck") is a German idiom. In English it would be more like "to live off the fat of the land".

He also used to be part of a Rapper Duo which is called "Eins Zwo", they also made gooood music. And, a little sidefact: Maybe you know the german satire/comedy entertainer Jan Böhmermann and his TV Show "ZDF (Neo) Magazin Royale"? Dendemann used to be the main musician in this show for a few years back in the 2010s. For me his best songs are "Omi aus dem ersten Stock" "Weltretten 4-" "Flaschenpost" "Danke Gut" & "Er so, Ich so" - Those tracks are released from "Eins Zwo" which is him as a rapper but a different DJ back then. Eins Zwo still counts to some of the best HipHop Music in germany and personally for me Eins Zwo is some of the best HipHop music in gerneral. Personal for me, again, only Blumentopf is the real HipHop thing.

Glad you getting good recommendations of German artists….to be fair old school stuff has so much quality to offer. There’s some different bubbles of German Rap. Like Berlin is quite rough using a lot of cursing. Guys like Dendemann or Hamburg rap is really like the more intelligent kind of rap almost completely without cursing…just killing it with puns. Dende was Part of a "Group" called Eins Zwo (meaning one two) with which he gained fame. Nowadays he was big on TV. He's clearly known in the northern areas of germany for his rap skills since I assume 2000. If I might suggest... please listen to the song and original Video of "Hand aufs Herz" by Eins Zwo. You'll like it. Also a recommandation would be "3 1/2 Minuten" by himself. The Video is nuts.

I love Dendemann! With him it's all about the rhymes. He rhymes like six or more syllables every line! So lots of the lyrics are mainly built around unusual or funny rhymes. Like "blues singer on the wrong path" and "pedestrian on bike lanes": He has no blues background whatsoever, in German "Bluessänger auf Abwegen" and "Fußgänger auf Radwegen" is just a sick rhyme 🙂 It's funny to listen to just the meaning of the lyrics in English with all that being lost in translation.

He references "Schwimmbad" Culture, where the "Bademeister" (Lifeguard) watches the public pools. Everyone has childhood memories from going swimming, thats what he plays at. "Dendemeier" is a wordplay with his Name "Dendemann" and Meier, which is a really common Surname in Germany. Also the "100 Mainzelmänner" is wrongly translated into main men. He references the "Mainzelmännchen", which are shown on the national television between commercials and their " Guten Abend" is something most Germans know.

Dendemeier and Digidendemüller are wordplays with his name. He calls himself Dendemann which sounds like a typical family name, while Meier and Müller are very common German last names. "Schwimmte", "schwamm" and "schwomm" are three ways to say the past term of schwimmen (to swim) and it gives the chorus such a cool and funny flow. The correct simple past is "ich schwamm" (I swam), while "schwomm" is used only as a word part to form past perfect or progressive "ich bin/war geschwommen" (I was swimming) or conditional "ich schwömme wenn" (I'd swim/swam if). "Ich schwimmte" on the other hand is totally wrong but used by sooo many people. "Like a maggot in the bacon" is a very common German idiom that describes living a life of plenty. It's often meant as an expression of envy towards someone who apparently has it easier in life. That's why we use the disgusting picture of a maggot feasting through a block of bacon, a vermin infesting something we want for ourselves and that now seems spoiled.
