They use different judges for each of the three finals nights I believe, so it was his final performance of that season. He passed in 2022 after a long battle with cancer.

The best part of these multi-layered shows is that it’s too easy to miss a handful of things…especially when you have a single viewing. As you said, you get focused on one element and then potentially miss others. A great thing about the drum corps season is being able to watch these shows change and evolve, but also you get to see it numerous times. WHEN you come to Indy next year (hopefully for all three days) you’ll get to see these shows three times…you’ll be able to appreciate many more layers. Great reaction, as always, and love that it gave you more context of DCI.

DCI has different judges for every major event of the season. This includes prelims, semifinals, and finals to ensure less bias. That was why Joe was saying this was his last, he may have judged Crown earlier in the season in a different venue and being selected as a judge for finals week is a MAJOR honor. The passion he shared on this tape is a passion you will find with many other judge tapes and something I'm sure you'll someday be able to express in the same way they do.

Love that you found this so inspiring, Charlie! Keep in mind these judges have generally been involved in this activity the majority of their lives, both as performers and then educators, so don't feel like you have to get to their level of knowledge! (On the other hand... I can totally imagine sitting next to you in Indianapolis next year as you spit fire phrases like “vertical alignment of sonority” and “congruency of octaves and pitch relationship in the light-touch ostinato” 😂)

And Charlie, when you react, you are explaining to yourself what you are experiencing. The judge is explaining to the corps and staff how what they are doing is being experienced.

I’ve probably watched this judge tape hundreds of times, and still here crying alongside you yet again. Just the pure and utter magic that this show was both musically and visually, combined with one of the best commentaries in the business is just the perfect equation (other than e=mc^2 of course haha). Picking up on the lingo and jargon of drum corps just takes time and watching judges tapes is a fantastic way to pick up on the things that they are looking for and noticing. At the end of the day all that matters though is that you enjoyed what you saw, and I think that’s what people come to your channel for! Cheers mate

Hearing his passion and knowledge for the arts makes me aspire to be a better teacher for my students. I really wish I could have met him before he passed but from what I hear, he was a wonderful person and left a legacy for us to push forward. ❤ In my mind…

Fellow Brit here , awesone reaction . I marched back in the 80’s and ive never stopped watching.from the power of music , to the choreography. To the fans to the judges is unbelievable . the people who create this and live through the moment is unexplainable.. and that’s ok . Because somethings don’t need to be understood ; Just witnessed. If I was a member or listening back to this judge I would be happy for ever .

6:22 *"This is a revelation of sonic accuracy and purity!"* Nothing said it better than their perfect 20. I'm still amazed by the achievement of the members of 2013 Crown (certainly not to overlook that of those strong seasons leading up to their Victory). Joe puts it so well, even when he's talking the deeper music theory stuff. You're able to pull the context clues of just how impressive of a performance this was. So happy to see you react to this one, Charlie, as I think I mentioned it a while back. Such a unique perspective to view the activity from, and I love it! I always loved listening to judges tapes when I was in Marching Band in High School. Sitting down in class during school, as a band, and the directors walking us through the critiques. Also watching a high camera video of our run from the competition that prior Saturday and looking at things we need to work on in rehearsals. It's a really cool process to be a part of and to actually experience the fruits of that labor. So amazing.

The perfect show and judge for your initiation to adjudication. You can see why Dr. Allison was so respected, and so loved by the performers. When you nailed it, he reacted, showing the love and respect he had for the activity. And when he had comments/suggestions, you paid attention as he was the epitome of the phrase He's forgotten more than you've ever learned. At one point in the tape he said "But I'm probably the only one who noticed that." Fact. He would pick up on things, and you'd say "No way, we've been judged X times", Then you'd listen again very, very closely and...... "Dammit, he's right". R.I.P. Dr. Allison, you were one of a kind. Kudos to whoever provided the tape and coordinated it with the actual show.

Dont feel bad about missing stuff man, I’ve been a dci fanatic for over a decade with my primary focus always being music, and I miss 90% of the visual and conceptual stuff that you do! Each show is like its own three course dinner where you forget how good the asparagus was because of how much you love the steak or something 😂 That’s why we keep rewatching and relistening to these shows years later, and why its such a beautiful and heartbreaking thing that these shows are only performed for one summer then never again.

After each and every show the corps do, throughout the summer, they get the judges tape. It helps gives them direction as to which parts of the show are great, and which parts may need some work, or maybe even need to be changed. It helps them to continuously work on perfecting the show, leading up to the finals.

Mr. Allison (he was not a Dr yet) was my first band director in 7th grade in 1979 at Hamlet Jr High. I'm not sure but we may have been his first class that he taught as well. He was passionate and intimidating, but you knew he wanted you to be your best even if chalkboard erasers were occasionally flung. Lol. Only had him one year as he moved to be director at Richmond Sr High by my 8th grade year and then he left for Summerville SC when I started high school.

Reacting to videos must be a delicate balancing act: you need to know enough about the content to know what you’re looking at, but ignorant enough to view it from a wide-eyed, fresh perspective. When you’ve watched as much drum corps as I have, you enjoy experiencing it vicariously from someone seeing it for the first time. Keep up the great work.

Great reaction Charlie I like watching what you have to say because you are an observer that does not live drum crop life. Your opinions inspire these young adults by showing and highlighting what others may not look at. You even see things that I myself can miss due to my biases "tend to watch more towards percussion and brass instead of guard and there are beautiful guard moments.". One of my favorite DCI shows I have seen was 2014 Blue Devils ... trust me this was not easy for me to single that one show as there were so many good ones over the years "e.g. 2018 Santa Clara". Charlie you should do a reaction to 2014 Blue Devils it is one of the highest scoring shows of all time ...

There is so much happening all the time that it's hard to focus on everything ... that's why there are so many judges at these competitions. They are not 'professional' judges in the strictest sense ... they are music teachers from high schools and universities across the country. They know music and percussion and drill design better than we mere mortals. I've been following drum corps since the late 70s and I'm often perplexed by what I see on the field. Don't be so hard on yourself.
