Small fun fact about costco. One of their past CEOs tried to raise the price of the hotdog and soda, and the board of directors fired that CEO for trying.

Even as an American, the amount of EVERYTHING at Costco or SAMs club still amazes us. I’ve gotten fun colored contacts, filled a prescription, bought tires, a deal on 3 different size TVs as a bundle, done all the grocery shopping, had lunch, tried all the food samples, bought everything I needed for a beach vacation, books, and bought a giant trampoline all in one go. Everything is bundle prices. In my broke 20s, me and 1-2 friends would all go shopping together and then go home and split everything. No one needs 3 giant bottles of ketchup, a 10 pound pack of ground beef, 4 huge bottles of aspirin, 5 pounds of mangoes, etc. It’s already cheap in bulk, but when you go and buy everything you need and split the bill 3 ways, you get what you need for suuuuuuper cheap. Without splitting the bill, there is no way you’re walking out of there without spending a minimum of $200-$300. But I’ve spent $2000 on everything I needed food wise the first time my husband and I moved into to a new house together. I bought a pack of 5 enormous rolls of tin foil on that trip. It took 7 YEARS for us to finish those rolls! As a now almost 40 year old mom, with 3 kids, who is the neighborhood mom, where like 12 kids being at my house on a daily basis is normal, we now actually need and use all the crazy bulk items. side note: fir that doomsday comment, they literally sell doomsday type packages. Shelf stable food that will feed a family of 4 for years at a time in case the world ever goes to shit. They’re literally apocalypse intended emergency food supplies. Food stays good for decades and can sustain you for different increments of time depending on the bundle you buy.

The $1.50 hot dog and drink has been the same price since Costco started. And it's good! And big! It's what is called a loss leader. Same as the roasted whole chicken. They lose money on it but it brings people in to the store. Here in the US it's easy to get a membership card. You don't have to be a business but it does cost $60 for a years membership. I do Sams Club because it's closer. Sams has two cooler rooms. One with the milk, eggs, and creamer, and one with produce, berries, etc. The milk room is much colder. On a hot day it's great to just go into that room and breathe. So cold. There's usually a heat exchanger dripping cold water somewhere in the room. The Costco $1.50 hotdog and coke is very famous. The original CEO was adamant about keeping it at that price. Costco's original CEO was big about taking care of his lowest-level workers, which is why they actually paid their workers double the minimum wage for a long time. The food stand is where most of the employees ate at, so the CEO was adamant on making sure the price didn't go up on them.

Many local establishments buy in bulk and resale as part of their own menu. A membership is about $65.00 a year. You just buy the membership in the store. If you buy large packages of meat (beef, pork, poultry and fish) you can divide it up and freeze it. I typically make large batches (4-5 gallons) of soups, stews, chili and tomato sauce and freeze it in quart sized containers. I don't buy a lot of canned veggies, but I do buy frozen. Same process...break it up into smaller quantities and freeze. The large packages of pasta & rice will keep for quite a while as long as your home is relatively cool and dry. I live in Florida, so the a/c is on 10 months of the year. The $1.50 hot dog is actually very good. Costco is great for stocking up on things you use frequently, especially if you have a large family, or, in my case, entertain frequently.

And some things are actually cheaper per unit if you get them at a supermarket or Walmart instead of buying in bulk. Moreso if the items are likely to spoil. You don't want fruit in bulk. @@protorhinocerator142Yup, bulk fruit is great if you're making a large batch of homemade jams or fruit pies, but I mainly have my Costco membership for the gas prices and insurance for my vehicle, because their rates beat out all others when I decided to go with them. Bulk items that are in case-packs of grocery store sizes that I frequently use but not quickly enough for a gallon-sized can is good sometimes, especially nonperishables that have a long shelf-life or can be frozen for a few months is good too. Many years ago I went "Costco crazy" and learned the hard way what items are not the best value when you don't use it up fast enough and it sadly goes bad so you end up having to throw it away 🥺 So I stick with WinCo for the smaller sizes of items that are much more manageable 😊

To get a membership you just walk in the front door and go to the membership desk and pay $60. They will take your picture and give you a membership card with your picture on it (it's also available digitally on your phone). It's not hard. The hotdog is really good. The hotdog/soda, pizza and rotisserie chicken prices won't change. Costco is very proud of that. It keeps people coming in regularly. "Costco's chief financial officer Richard Galanti was asked in 2022 if the company would ever raise the price, to which he replied that the hot dog and soda meal would remain $1.50 "forever." If the hot dog and soda combo kept up with inflation, it would cost nearly three times as much at about $4.21"

The price is still $1.50 to this day. Same with the $5 chicken, price hasn't budged in decades. Trust me, Lewis still hasn't grasped the concept of buying in bulk, either on the consumer side OR the retailer side and how it works. Those dogs probably cost Costco .30 to offer and that fountain drink is just what's called a consumable, and every big business does it. That's money a big company already factors in they will have to spend (maybe out of pocket) on things just to attract customers or to present a better looking product. They won't even see that money anyway and those are their own hot dogs anyway. So yea $1.50 would sound crazy to someone. It's an odd concept to him even after all these videos. LOL.

Americans have a huge buy in bulk, separate and store culture. For instance, we get a pack of 20 pork chops and bag them up individually or portion them out, then freeze them. Costco is for large families and companies. If you're single, it's kinda not worth it unless you share a food budget with roommates. Costco sells in bulk when it comes to food. What's good is that you can always ask someone who has a membership to tag along and shop with them, or, you can add another person to your account so they have their own card. My work used to get cakes and pizza for company parties from Costco. Its a simple easy cheap way to feed around 200 people.

Last year I bought a deep freezer to store steaks in. I grill out every Saturday. Yum. Publix (regular super market) has recurring sales on ribeye steaks or standing rib roast (pretty much the same thing). I just got notified Publix has the bone-in ribeyes on sale for $8.99 a pound, which is more than half off. Time to stock up. I have my own breaker knife (cheap online) and I typically cut my own portions. Lately I've been cutting them bone thickness, which is 2 inches. You need to cook them a little longer to get that perfect medium rare. But man, can you get a ridiculously good maillard reaction cooking them that long! If you have a Publix near you, go look for those $8.99 ribeyes. I know I will. I portion them up, throw them in freezer bags, and deep freeze them. At Christmas they were selling for about $6 a pound. I bought a ton and saved so much with that sale, it paid for my deep freezer. Long term strategy there. No regrets.

Anyone can join! Business owners, but also the general public. There is the Goldstar membership, which is the basic for I think it’s $60 a year and then there is the executive membership which gives a percentage kickback accumulated during the year.. so if you get the executive membership, your percentage kickback for purchases will usually more than cover membership and then some! They have excellent customer service!

Costco and Sam’s Club are what we call big box stores. They sell everything in bulk. Sometimes it’s just too much. You may want 1 lb meat, but you’ll have to buy 3 because that’s the way it’s packaged. I used to shop Sam’s a lot when the kids were home, now just occasionally because I don’t need a ton of food! 😂

I feel like Costco was originally meant for small business, but buying stuff in bulk saves money for people with big families or for things you’ll save money on overtime (40 rolls of toilet paper). I’ve only been once and I’m in the U.S. for membership you can get it online or in the store in person - it’s for anyone, and not reserved for people with a business.

I think in some countries, there is a bulk issue with selling to the general public but not here thank goodness.

I have a costco membership. You can actually find better deals at local grocery stores. Just have to watch for loss leaders. Costco doesnt really have sales on groceries compared to other stores. For example, ground beef was on sale at a nearby store for $3.49, plus dh got a military discount of 10%. So final price was about $3.15/lb. I loaded up at that price and filled my freezer. Their non grocery items are usually pretty good deals. Their rotisserie and hot dog prices are really good. Also, dont forget the exchange rate between usd and British pound.

People in US usually make a giant batch of green beans with bacon seasoning and freeze portions in individual containers for meals during the week. We do the same with the huge potato bags, giant lasagnas, pots of rice, huge batches of Jambalaya with the sausages and freeze them. Later during the month we mix and match meals with the frozen portions.

The food is individually packaged inside the boxes so you don’t have to cook all of it at one time. The hamburger for $3.99 was per pound. That was several pounds of meat so the actual price was more for the package. Some of the things are low cost and some are higher, but Costco carries the higher end quality products so that is why it would be more expensive on some things than Walmart. The cans of green beans would be something that a restaurant would buy. I have bought the large cans and then repackaged and froze the food I didn’t cook immediately. The TV was an LG brand which is a higher end brand. Walmart sells the 65” TVs for about $450, but it is a lower end brand. Still it is a good tv. I renovated my bathroom and even bought a high end toilet and bathroom vanity. Costco has a great return policy. One other thing, their apple pie is AMAZING!

Bro - THE FOOD IS ACTUALLY GOOD!!!! Costco refuses to raise the prices of the hot dog and the rotisserie chicken. They want you to come in. Also, at $120 per year, the top membership becomes free after 2% cash back rebate when you purchase much of your goods there including tires, food, and household supplies. Costco also has a reputation for selling quality products which has effect when you STRONGLY consider the chain for your electronic, clothing, and houseware goods purchases too.

So, the beef is 3.99 per pound and those packages are HUGE but the quality is GREAT. I usually buy the organic beef because the taste is amazing and they come in packages of 4, 1lb packs. (Easier to freeze or portion). The rotisserie chicken IS 4.99 total and is known as a loss leader. They sell it for a loss b/c they. know it gets people in store and once you're there, you're buying a TON of stuff. Chicken and apple sausage are SO GOOD. I was surprised myself. And yes, Costco IS cheap but you're buying in bulk so it's much cheaper per lb or per piece. Costco is also well known for picking things that are good quality.

Just started watching your videos. Really enjoying the content. I’m from Seattle, WA where Costco was founded. Go there almost every week. As you see in the video most items are larger, bulk sizes so I mainly get things there that I use constantly or have a longer shelf life, then I get my smaller quantity items at a local market. Base memberships are $65 per year. And yes the food court is a really great value. Fun fact, the hotdog and drink combo have been priced at $1.50 since it was introduced back in the 1980s.
