The seafood they dumped out on the table was a Cajun crawfish boil. It's got crawfish, corn, red potatoes, summer sausage, and usually a hard boiled egg. You can do crawfish boils with northeastern style seasoning, too. A chicken fried steak is a slice of beef that's been battered in the same batter used for fried chicken and then deep fried. Lawrence HAD to have seen one before because they're the thing Indiana is most associated with besides basketball, where they serve ridiculously large pieces of steak that dwarf the bun and are larger than the largest of dinner plates. That nasty looking atomic orange cheese on that hot dog is nacho cheese. Not my first choice for a dog or burger.

I used to live on the Indiana Illinois border and I never heard of chicken fried steak till I came to Texas. I've also never heard chicken-fried steak mentioned in the same sentence as Indiana! And I much preferred chicken fried steak with a side of fries and cream gravy, not on a bun.

I grew up in northeastern Indiana and our big, big seller was pork tenderloin sandwich as it originated there. I hadn’t heard of chicken fried steak until I met my husband from Ohio.

Chicken-fried = chicken or steak (usually round steak) that is covered with flour, then dipped in an egg/milk mixture and then covered in flour again before frying. The flour-egg-flour makes a nice crust. It is the egg in the middle that gives it the “chicken-fried” name.

I recommend September as the best time to visit America. It’s not too hot or cold, kids are back in school so parks and tourist sites are less crowded. Fall foliage is beautiful and there are harvest festivals.

"That's Cajun? That looks like seafood." - That's a seafood boil, boy. Crawfish/Crayfish/Crawdads/Mudbugs, potatoes, corn, (Andouille) sausage, and tons of Cajun spices. Boiled up and thrown on big table covered in a plastic tablecloth for everyone to dig in. Yum!! Louisiana is on the Gulf of Mexico and the Southern half is swampland. Lots and lots of awesome seafood down that way.

Some Americans learn Scott Gaelic and Irish Gaelic to better understand our heritage. Shaun was at a reenactment. This is where we remember older cultures here in the United States. Chicken fried steak is battered/crusted beefsteak. Often served with mashed potatoes with 'country gravy.' (White gravy.) The tallest pines on the West Coast are about 80 metres tall. In-between major cities in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansa and the Great Plains is open county. Ranches and crops as far as the eye can see. Being at a professional game in the U.S. is amazing! Major leagues are even more exciting than minor league games!

I think your passport allows you to stay 3 months. I love Shaun and have watched him for years. Especially loved his Scottish videos traveling around Scotland and he got some awesome aerial photos and videos with his drone. You’ll definitely get a lot of attention because of your accent. We love British ones. Admittedly, they’re right, Scottish accents are a little more popular but as long as you’re not with a Scottish person, you won’t notice. Sorry in advance for the people that try to imitate you and do VERY poorly. I’m sure it can get annoying but I promise it’s all in good fun and we’re just jealous we don’t sound like you. The Scottish heritage thing here is a big deal in some places. I’ve been to “Highland Games” and it’s amazing. I found my family/clan tartan, my Dad got a kilt, we had a great time watching the competitions. And you don’t have to have Scottish ancestors at all to compete or simply enjoy and experience it. Some are there for the ancestry, some are there for education on another culture or history, some just want to heave a tall log end over end (caber toss). Something for everyone lol.

I've been watching Shaun for years. He's great and has been to quite a few places in America. He and his wife don't really sugarcoat anything either, if something is trash(the food, the cars, the music, the hotels)...they will say so. One of my favorite videos of his was his older ones from before the pandemic, when he got to go on a tour of America with some sort of group, they got to see some great things. Another one I enjoyed was when he was walking (In the Carolinas? Virgina? Pennsylvania? I already forgot where it was) and he was sitting outside on the porch at night and just could not believe the cacophony of insect and animal sounds/calls. it was so loud to him. And then in the day he went for a walk and was afraid he'd run into a mountain lion which are not a thing in those parts of America. It was so funny and innocent.

There are so many beautiful and impressive areas of each state. Some places get much more publicity than others, but there is good and bad in every state and city. Always ask the locals. Most people are proud of their town or state and they will steer you toward the best their area has to offer. Being an Illinois girl I can tell you the “s” is silent in Illinois and Wrigley field and the cubs are definitely a party atmosphere. It makes up for the fact that we only win a World Series every 100 years or so. Lol

Chicken-Fried Steak (aka Country Fried Steak) is just a tenderized round steak covered in an egg wash batter, deep fried, and then served with white Sawmill gravy. Sawmill gravy is made like Sausage gravy for Biscuits and Gravy, but without the sausage chunks. In other words, just the sausage grease. Some common sides for Country Fried Steak are Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, and Corn. Some restaurants have what they call corn nuggets which are just deep fried clumps of cream corn. They're quite good.

Okay, I feel kind of silly explaining this to a Brit because I feel like you should already know this, but here we go: The name prefix Mac is Scottish and I think originally meant "son of" So MacDonald was originally Son of Donald. And then last names became more hereditary and not about who your father was. The prefix Mc is Irish and means essentially the same thing. McDonald would originally have been "Son of Donald." And therefore McDonald's would have Irish founders. You will find both Mac and Mc in many American names as we have tons of Scottish immigrants who left the UK because of historical prejudices and limitations put on them in the previous 300 years, and you'll find even more descendants of Irish immigrants for the same reasons PLUS all the famines.

I've been watching your show for several weeks and I really enjoy it! I have quite a few English friends with whom I studied abroad many years ago. And others I met when I was a nanny in New York. My boyfriend and I are uber foodies, and really enjoy traveling. We live in the South, actually in South Carolina , 20 minutes away from the border Georgia. We live within 2.5 and 3 hours of Charleston, Savannah, Hilton Head Island, and many other areas of the Lowcountry along the coast of both states. We are also pretty close to the North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee mountains. Whenever you make it to the States, we would be more than happy to show you around some of these areas, share some of the history and of course, make sure you try ALL of the most delicious Southern foods in the best places to have them! We could also most probably put you up whilst you're in the area.😊

What you need when you come here is a road trip buddy (preferably one with an RV who likes driving nights but has no real interest in playing tourist themselves) who can drive you from place to place and then hand you off to a local who can take you out to show you the sights while the RT buddy gets some sleep. You all have dinner at a local restaurant and then head off for the next location. With all your followers, I'm sure you could set up a route crisscrossing the country and a network of people living in each area who could fill 10-12 hours of a day showing you around. It's all on the planning.

One day I hope other cultures would get interested in native American cultures. We were here long before other cultures were. Sure we use to live a very basic lifestyle but so what still like hamburgers too. Im Tlingit from Alaska tribe in hooha. Most of my tribe enjoyed eating fish, making cider hats and blankets. Some tribal members make totoms. I just wish we could be given a chance at people getting to know us a little bit more.

I think Laurence has mentioned places like Cahokia (near St. Louis). There’s a huge state historic site for Native American heritage and history where one of the biggest civilizations was located hundreds of years ago. Really cool place where you can climb up to the mounds and look around archaeological dig sites sometimes. There’s also a big museum there with things they’ve found, amazing facts about the culture, etc. I have a question for you though: at Scottish heritage events, people are really happy to include everyone even if they don’t have that heritage at all, but I can imagine that maybe people with Native heritage wouldn’t appreciate others coming in to their spaces. Is that the case? Would you feel like you were being seen as an attraction or oddity if there were more NA events open to the public? I’ve always been self conscious about that. I don’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. And that feeling might be why more people don’t show interest- because they’re afraid to in case it bothers who they’re curious about? If you know of any open events in the Midwest, let me know. I’d love to check it out. Cahokia was really fascinating to learn about.

The problem is is that early America was very good about erasing the majority of those places that were sacred It's very sad but I agree I'm very interested in learning but I learned is very sad that there's not really as much left like something like 80% just erase off the face of the earth by early Americans 😢

@@logan4005 from the experience I had with other native Americans they seem to be very private about their information. Which makes us look a little distance from other people sometimes. I didn't get a chance to grow up on a reservation like many native Americans did. So I'm almost an outsider looking inside my Tlingit culture. The one thing I also know two is that we don't talk about anything like bad dreams. Because oftentimes are seen as demonic attacks. That talking about them when we bring back the spirit.

5:25 You should check out Shaun's "Scottish guy goes to California for the first time video. He visited some of the redwoods. Shaun was here in the US last year for 5 weeks in the spring, and did two separate visits in the summer and autumn. But he has visited several other times in the past. He does love visiting the US.

When you plan your trip, you need to always keep in mind the size of the United States. Unless you plan on doing several months of dedicated travel, you will not come close to seeing it all. If you are coming for 2 weeks or less, you will be better served by choosing one region, rather than going to multiple places. I'll use Southern California as an example, because that's the area I'm most familiar with. You could easily spend a few days in LA, a few days in San Diego, maybe visit a few other cities, hit up a theme park or 2, and if you want to see a national park, that's it! Two weeks will go by in a flash, and you haven't even seen a third of a state, yet. Like they said in the video, just think about how long it would take to see the entirety of the UK, and you get an idea of what you're dealing with.

When you take your first trip to the US, I would recommend starting in the northeast. The states are smaller, so you can visit more places in a shorter amount of time. Also, there are more options for public transportation, so if you're uncomfortable driving you can still get around. As a Bostonian, I highly recommend Boston. You don't need to have a car to get around. You can walk everywhere or take the T (subway), or take the bus. If you like sports, Boston has the Red Sox, the Celtics, the Bruins, and the Patriots. If like history, you can learn all about the American Revolution. If you like food, there are so many restuarants with food from all over the world. I highly recommend the North End for great Italian food. Also if you like American accents, the Boston accent is my favorite. My husband has lived his whole life in Boston and whenever we visit Ohio, people love to hear his accent.

Stop down to Philly afterwards to experience the other half of the revolutionary history and some of the best food in the nation (I guess NYC makes sense in between if you've never been) Plus, the country may not have a good transportation system, but you can get around both Boston and Philadelphia without a car, both are very pedestrian friendly and have expansive public trans, and there is a high speed rail between the two cities, so theres not much travel time needed to do these two cities besides the plane

That Cajun food they showed is a crawfish boil. Crawfish are kind of like little lobsters…but not. They make a big boil with the crawfish, pieces of corn on the cob, and potatoes and season it heavily with many spices. Once it’s done cooking the pot is drained and the entire pot is poured out onto a table and everyone sits around it and eats. There’s generally beer drinking involved, along with Cajun music and lots of laughter and chatter. It’s delicious but watching people eat crawfish might put you off a little.😮Google it…typing it out might come across a little vulgar 😮😅

I’ve loved Scottish accents so hard. The Chicago lakefront is the absolute crown jewel of the city. It is essentially a public park that runs along Lake Michigan. Gorgeous year-round, but brutal in the winter when the wind is blowing.

After the great Chicago fire, the city was rebuilt vertically, hence the birthplace of skyscrapers. There’s a redwood tree in California that has a car tunnel cut thru it, pretty wide tree, oldest living things on earth. I would guess that UK citizens are readily accepted here, shared history, language & culture. New England states, or the east coast et Al, was once British. Lot of states, cities, town names are British and buildings as well. I’m sure you could couch surf with subscribers nationwide, & yes Amtrak does connect all major cities as well.

There are many places where you can get fresh food. You have to get off the freeway to find them. They are usually Mom & Pop places. In my small town there are several places that serve fresh food and it’s locally sourced. You can find them if you look for them.

If you decide that you want to plan your trip to America, you should contact one of us a good year ahead of time. If it's winter when you are starting out and you don't really care for snow, you will want to see the lower states first because during the winter you'll need a 4X4 vehicle and be ready to be Cold 🥶. You will also want your visa to be at least 6 months to a year if that's possible, to see a good part of the United States. You'll need a traveling plan of stops you're going to go to and possibly people that you're going to stay with in each state or preferably if you can get a van to travel in, you could just park at a different families homes or property. That way you don't have to pay for hotels, motels or camp grounds, etc. There is so much to do and see in everyone's states.

I live in Ohio and I used to work at the local Disney Store ( in the mall). I met so many interesting people from all over the world when I worked there. Israelis, Italians, British, and France to name a few. They would visit the store to purchase souvenirs for friends and family. I had so much fun with them asking questions about their country, their vacation experience and helping them find the perfect gift. I even found out that one of our Italian guests was from the same town as my grandpa’s family!

Cajun and Creole are styles of cooking. Like there's southern cooking, french cooking etc. That was a crawfish boil.

Cajuns are from France, settled in Canada and resettled in Louisiana. Creoles came up from the east indies on their own as free people. Each group of people brought spices and their own type of cooking along with other cultural traditions.

Cajun food has many seafood elements. And, McDonald's was named after the McDonald brothers (who had their original burger place before it became a franchise). They were American, but their parents were Irish immigrants. So, McDonald's is Irish.

I used to work at Steak 'n' Shake, and we had chicken fried steak. When you fry chicken, you dip it in egg and dredge it through a coating: flour, fine breadcrumbs, or similar, then deep-fry it in hot oil. So you take a beef steak from a boneless cut of beef, then you dredge it and coat it and fry it. Or you coat it with a batter and deep fry it. We in America love our fried foods.

I live in the piney woods of East Texas and yes, in certain areas of the country, the trees are 80-100 feet tall but drive 200 miles to the North Texas area, trees only grow to about 25 feet, Maybe because in East Texas there's more sand in the top soil while in North Texas they have black soil.

The maximum duration of a tourist visa is 6 months. You can enter and leave the US multiple times during the six months or stay for six months. Usually a person is given a combination B1/B2 visa. A B1 visa is to attend business conferences and job interviews and a B2 visa is for sightseeing, visiting friends/relatives, playing sports (as long as you don't get paid), attending arts/music festivals, performing music/acting (as long as you don't get paid, getting medical treatment other than having a baby (Birth visas are not issued, in other words, if you do have a baby while in the US on a B1/B2 visa, the child doesn't get US citizenship). If for some reason you don't get the combination visa, you can't interview for a job or seek employment on a B2 visa, but the combination is usually issued by default.

I am from the Atlanta area and our baseball team is the Atlanta Braves. When you go to a braves game, everybody, both sides, go to the varsity restaurant after the game. With that said, I think at the beginning he said "Gaelic" not "garlic" when referring to the Irish culture. . . The "Chicken Fried Steak" dish is made a few ways depending on the restaurant, my favorite way is a chopped steak patty (this is a type of steak meat that's coarse grinded, made into a patty), then either baked, grilled or fried in a pan medium rare, then battered, then deep fried, then served with mashed potatoes with a country gravy over both, OH MY GOD! IT IS AWESOME! . . . The citizenship thing where a city makes you a citizen of a city or town, that's more symbolic than anything, there's no legal standing behind it, the person would need to apply for permanent citizenship if he wants to be a U.S. citizen.

I live on the Northern California coast and the weather is very much like the UK; chilly, damp, and can rain at any time. The hottest temp this summer was 73° ( 22° C). Humboldt County California is absolutely gorgeous and super 420 friendly!!!

Been all over the US and i think my favorite places have been our National Parks on the west side of the US: Olympic and Rainier in WA, Yosemite and Redwoods in CA, Arches and Zion in UT, Grand Tetons and Yellowstone in WY, and Glacier in Montana. Breathtaking. There are many more National Parks on my bucketlist.

When I was much younger my Mom took us across the US twice. We camped in a tent most of the time. We were gone a month first time to cover the lower half and two months the second time to see most of the upper states and the western part of lower Canada. Even with all of that we didn’t get to the New England states. I saw those later with my wife visiting her relatives. The US is simply massive and there is so much to see. You could honestly spend a year here and still not see everything

Actually, there ARE people in the US who wear kilts every day. In my smaller town in Oklahoma, there's a guy who wears a kilt... of course, he,s a war vet from the 90s that suffers from PTSD and a TBI.

I love going to baseball games in America. So much to watch and you can keep the box scores, eat munchies, watch people. It’s boring on TV though (unless you are in the playoffs!).

I can see why baseball might seem boring if you don't understand the strategies and plays. Many people would probably disagree, but to me, baseball is the most intellectual of all the country's major team sports. My father played in the minor league, so I was raised to understand and appreciate the game.

California is not only 1.7 times the size of the UK, you have so many choices of what kind of area to visit. You have both the Northern California and Southern California coastlines, which are totally different from each other. You also have the Great Redwood forests, the mountains out East with world class Ski Resorts, the LA area, which is just this huge spread out city, inland California with small mountain towns full of warm people and interesting stuff, Napa Valley which is Wine Country where they produce world class wines, and so much more. Cali is a month-long trip, easy.

I was born in the U.S., and have lived in many areas of the country. I would only suggest to seek out great local restaurants as opposed to national/international chains. Every region and local metros have many options for great local foods. Just ask local residents, and you’ll likely get great suggestions!

Our chicken fried steak is basically like a German schnitzel with a white gravy, sauce, béchamel sauce of sorts on top. That cheese on the hotdog looks like nacho cheese. Some convenience stores/large gas stations will have hot soft and nachos and such. Looks like Shaun got a hotdog and put nacho cheese on top instead of regular cheese. In many of those places there wouldn’t be anything different then that. Lol

Chicago! Born and raised. Lewis, it's Illinois, it's ILL IN OY. There's no NOISE in Illinois. The food culture is amazing. OUR hot dogs Rockl Italian beef is paper thin slices of roast beef, in a beef broth on French bread. You can get it dry, or one dip, or two dips. They dunk the sandwich in the broth one time and you can somewhat still pick it up to eat it. Double dip and the bread is swimming in broth. You can't pick it up and you'll need a fork to eat it. On that, you can get sweet bell peppers that are soft and buttery, or you can add a pepper, onion hot pepper sauce. But it's the hot dog..... Many museums, Navy Pier for people watching. If you come, research the World Expo around the turn of the century 1898-1904. Rich history and the birth of electric lights. A book called DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY. It's about the exposition, AND about the US's first serial killer, that may have given birth to Jack the Ripper! The killer was out of country around the same time as the Ripper! Ive been in California for 45 years now. I miss the City, food and culture, but NOT the weather. 😮

I believe you can get a three month visa just for a visitation. Don’t come in the winter and go up north unless it’s a brief visit. And don’t try to drive in the snow and ice unless you have real serious experience. If it’s the winter visit the South. And remember, most of the South doesn’t have a real spring or fall(autumn). It’s either very humid and hot or cold. Rarely do we have moderate temperatures.

I live in Wisconsin USA. Home of cheese and beer. I am born and raised in America and I'm 64 years old. Not many here probably know about mushy peas - but I love them! I make my own. Cajun (a combination of warm spices) is spicy, and sometimes can bring sweat to your forehead, kind of spicy. Cajun is a trademark spice of the South, and known and used all across America. It can be used on any kind of food; but usually seafood, fish and vegetables have the flavor. There is more than Burger King, KFC or McDonald's here, but many will eat there because it's the cheapest fast food places in America, not always the fastest or healthiest options. If you want a step above those restaurants, go to places like Panera Bread or Culver's or a sit down Diner with homemade food, even in a bar setting, the food is better than McD's, KFC or BK. Honorary Citizenship means he is an honored guest of America, it doesn't mean he is now an actual American Citizen. This is from a government page about honorary citizenship - Honorary citizenship does not carry with it the rights and privileges of ordinary citizenship, and such status does not confer any special entry, travel or immigration benefits upon the honoree or the honoree’s relatives and dependents. If someone asks you to say, "bah-ah o wah-ah", just remind them that Americans say "mou-en" for "mountain". Some of us don't realize that we also don't pronounce the "T" in some words. Also, we LOVE British accents here. Likewise, whenever I've been in Britain, many have struck up a conversation with me as soon as they heard my American/California accent. So don't be afraid to talk to people here. They'll LOVE your accent. And, again, whenever I've been in Britain, people have been VERY helpful & kind. Some have gone out of their way to point us in the right directoion. So, they may not be so polite to another Brit, but you can take heart that they seem to be kind to visitors. I have been watching Shaun from Scotland for about a year now. He travels with his wife. So, hopefully, your youtube channel will afford you to visit us here someday soon. Now, as far as eating healthy goes, you can eat healthy or somewhat healthy anytime you want to. It's just that youtube visitors are interested in chronicling all the delicious foods you can't get in the U.K. You will see that if you really want something healthy, you'll be able to find it somewhere on the menu. But I'll bet, you'll opt for what is delicious over what is healthy most of the time, because you may never have the chance to eat it ever again.

British citizens can visit the US with a passport, but without a visa, for up to 90 days at a time. You would need to apply online for a visa waiver. The fee for the application process is $95 USD. Once granted, the waiver is valid for up to 2 years and for multiple visits within that period of up to 90 days. If the waiver is denied, then you'd have to apply for a visa. Once you're in the country, you can go from state-to-state with no further issues, but be warned, our states in general are fairly large and it takes a long time to go from big city to big city. :)

The only mushy peas I'm eating is if I add tabasco sauce. Chicken fried steak is flank steak, pounded and coated in batter (the same batter we coat fried chicken in - hence the name), deep fried and served with white gravy. It's a heart attack on a plate, but OMG it's good!

Louisiana is where cajun comes from. Its on the gulf of mexico. That pale of seafood were crawfish. They are very popular at BBQs in the coastal areas of the south, particularly Louisiana.

Going to a sporting event here is definitely an enjoyable experience due to the atmospere. I think football is especially fun if you can get in on the tailgate party before the game... So much fun, everyone's in a great mood, super friendly, loads of food and beer. It's a total blast.
