Hello Dwayne [ @dwaynesview ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). Welcome to Nightwish, where every member of the band is an expert musician and all of them play for the song. No egos here. The result is music where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. You will find that every song is different and that there isn't a bad song in their extensive catalog. The lead singer is Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen). She can literally sing anything. The keyboardist is Tuomas Holopainen. He is the composer and lyricist of 95% of their songs and is often called the "Metal Mozart". The others are all equally noteworthy, but I'd have to write way too much to introduce them all. You will meet them all in good time if you continue down the Nightwish road. Worth noting that Floor had explained her feeling of being burnt out prior to this, and that she was still dealing with the anxieties of her abilities over the preceding years. But the performance she gave at Wacken that year was stunning, and I think she herself found a lot of comfort in that. Full kudos to Toumas for recognizing her talent and bringing it to the stage

Never really been a fan of the term "Symphonic Metal". Yes the heavy elements are there, but the whole sound is so much more. I prefer to leave it "Symphonic Rock", with the "metal" being just a part of it.

Wacken are little town in germany, one of Europe's biggest metal festivals is organized there once a year. at that time 2013 Nightwish was the main performer of the evening, audience 82k. which I would have been with, but when I wasn't. T: NW fan since 1996. Because so many US-reactors compare Nightwish with Evanescence I listened to this band. No, Evanescence is not at the same level as Nightwish; Nightwish are their own genre with an ocean of excellent music and Floor is the most versatile female singer I have ever heard, with a phenomenal voice and stage presence. She can sing all from opera to death metal growls and all in perfection. And whatever she sings she touches your heart and soul deeply. All members of the band are outstanding artists playing for the song instead of showing off - no egos on stage. And they all love what they are doing - and each other. By the way, a lot of Nightwish songs sound cinematic because Tuomas (on keyboards), the composer and writer of the lyrics of most Nightwish songs, loves soundtracks (especially of Hans Zimmer) and Disney. And you asked for Wacken: This is a small village (about 2000 inhabitants) in Northern Germany with a lot of cattle; therefore the symbol of Wacken Open Air is the burning bull's head. One time every year for about four days this big metal festival takes place there, normally with about 85.000 visitors. At this concert there had been about 82.000 visitors in the audience.

She is pitch perfect (some sound engineer reactor even measured it with his tools - nothing to do here) and has the power to reach the listeners also without mic and amp. But I still somehow liked the "evanescence with steroids" -phrase. Even though i just cannot see the resemblance. Nightwish has many talented members in it. Tuomas Holopainen is called "Metal Mozart" due his insane songwriting skills that utilizes all the skills of his band. And everyone gives their all in these performances, making these songs come together seamlessly. And when Floor came in after Anette Olzon she had to memorize the current tours' setlist in 48 hours. There's an documentary about it as well. She came and she conquered the tour. Floor is classically trained singer and it shows. Those long notes, belting, growling and strong vocals hinge on her great control of her diaphragm. You can see the proof of control in the way how she makes it seem so easy to hold those powerful long notes, she's actually smiling through the whole song. There's also a solid reason why she's referred as the Valkyrie Goddes of Metal, and it's not only her voice but her ability to control the stage with her mere presence. Just look how she calls her forces forth and they answer.

For us Brits. Nightwish work to a click track pre-recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Metro Voices Choir and the London Young Children's Choir. They have played Wembley Arena several times and fill it to full capacity. They have a massive catalogue full of great songs, a massive rabbit hole to dive down. You will also find side tunnels that lead to other great bands like Epica, Ayreon and Sabaton. Plus side projects. Finding Floor Jansen (singer, Dutch) and the band got me through lockdown. Hopefully you will follow up on them and enjoy them as much as I have. Check out Romanticide next from the same concert. You will find no two songs of theirs are the same.

It was founded by Sir Thomas Beecham in 1932 when he was approached by the rising young conductor Malcolm Sargent with a proposal to set up a permanent, salaried orchestra. @@billmorrison8292 I ve been wondering for many years what orchestra Nightwish used in their albums since there is not information in booklet credits album. The only reference I found was in High Hopes Nightwish compilation informing that for songs of Once album there IS The London Session Orchestra . And It make sense, because Gavyn Wright Is (was) the founder and leader along with Perry Montage-Mason , and these names are on every album. In anycase, because I wasnt totally sure of this, I asked to Mika Jussila (mastering engineer for many years on NW) about this and his answer was LSO. And by the way, do you like the last two singles ?

The ultimate reason why I kept listening to them was the horns, cellos, violins, pianos combined with the metal instruments that created this bombastic, cinematic sound. While I respect all the singers and people listening because of them, I often listen to the instrumental versions because then you truly appreciate all the little details they poured into these songs.

Agree 100%. Same story for me. I'd somehow not heard of Nightwish or Floor until a couple of years ago after a friend kept pestering me to give them a listen specifically "The Poet and the Pendulum" live from Wembley 2015. Reluctantly I gave in not expecting to like it having had preconceived ideas about symphonic metal but OMG I was blown away and have been every day since. I am pleased to welcome you to the wonderful world of Nightwish from the UK Oldies Division (East Anglian branch) of Nightwish Army. As you delve deeper into their music (as I hope you will) you will find many diverse songs. Symphonic metal is the official genre, but you will find songs ranging from metal to ballads and even a jazz track. I have subscribed to your channel in the hope that you'll keep on watching and listening to Nightwish, especially their live recordings. I saw them live at Wembley in November 2022 and it was the most amazing unforgettable experience. Now, for contrast, watch their video "Yours is an empty hope" to hear her growling, yes, metal growling. Her range is impeccable, from deep growls to soprano high notes. Also, she was classically trained, and has been a vocal coach, so her technique is also asounding. And lastly, I have seen her, separate from nightwish, on a show called "Beste Zangers" sing actual opera and more pop culture songs in German, Spanish, English, and Dutch(I believe)

Tarja was the most operatic and darker vocal sounds (original NW singer), Anette brought a brighter voice and more pop style which turned off many people since the style was so different even if she was amazing, then Floor brought it back to a darker sound. All incredible singers. Floor is probably the most versatile though

Welcome, Arkansas USA Division of the Nightwish Army isn here to watch and enjoy what sounds like your introduction to Nightwish. I'm a 73 year old rocker out of the US. Grew up on Cream, Eric Clapton, Beatles, Stones, Doobie Brothers, Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler etc. Nightwish is the best band and the most fun music I've found in over 30 years. Them music is welcoming and comforting as the band slays ya with some great metal and some rock. Their lyrics cover the sea, mans history and place on Earth and so much more. The band, which was formed in Kitee in 1996, is one of the most successful bands in Finland and the most successful outside of it. In the 1990s, the economy was bad and the Finns chose metal as their outlet. Metal became mainstream and remains so today. I was into Heavy music, Rock, Progressive etc but they blew me away. I could type, and talk, about Nightwish forever and a day, that's how they get you. I remember when I first fell in love with Nightwish and their music, I was 9 or 10 years old and my brother used to listen a lot of Nightwish. I've been lucky enough to see them live twice. Nightwish is truly amazing band

This concert was on Wacken Open Air which is simply the the biggest Metal Festval in the world and it happen in a small German town called Wacken. If you like this song and Operatic/Symphonic Metal listen to Nightwish with their first singer Tarja Turunen you'll be even more blowned away and listen to another band called Aesma Daema. They even have a song, like a cover song from a piece of Classical Music by Beethoven.

I became a huge fan of theirs many years ago. I only have one album, but I've listened to it countless times in the car for at least a decade. They're unique and so ridiculously talented. Epic is the word I use to describe them, as well. They're the kind of band you wanna blast on loud speakers and turn the bass up. I recommend... well, anything by them. You literally can't go wrong with their work, even when doing covers.

Un coucou de l'armée NIGHTWISH de France, avec un peu de retard , très bonne réaction et analyse à l'écoute du plus grand groupe du monde pour ma part. Vous venez de faire connaissance du métal symphonique et de notre reine Floor, mais vous n'avez qu'effleuré le dessus de l'iceberg et vous n'êtes qu'a l'entrée du terrier de lapin. Je vous souhaite de bons floorgasmes et continuez vos réactions nous serons toujours derrière vous pour vous soutenir pour notre groupe...... Encore plus d'écoutes s'il vous plait...... Merci. Continuez sur le festival du Wacken Open Air 2013, vous êtes sur de ne pas vous tromper, les quinze chansons du set sont des classiques pour tous les fans du groupe et sont à écouter absolument. Vous venez d'écouter la 13ème chanson du set, ensuite faites le Ever Dream qui commence comme une douce ballade voix piano et sur un signe de Marko ( le bassiste ) continue d'accélérer pour finir comme un train à grande vitesse et en même temps de faire la connaissance de la voix de Marko, puis essayez une petite histoire avec Storytime, excellent rock dont le refrain reste longtemps en tête ou alors du plus lourd avec Ghost River pour entendre le mélange magnifique des voix de Floor avec Marko ou encore plus lourd avec Romanticide..... Et je pense que notre ami Gabriel Bardac devait arriver sous peu, ou être déjà passé ( Un grand MERCI à Gabriel d'avoir repris le flambeau de notre regrettée Anne ) cliquez sur son nom et allez sur communauté, vous pourrez suivre sa liste en toute confiance avec les meilleurs mixages à la bonne vitesse et avec le meilleur audio mais ce n'est pas une obligation, juste un sage conseil pour entendre une petite partie du meilleur du groupe. Continuez les filets du groupe sont tendus et il vous sera très difficile de vous en sortir, plus de NIGHTWISH s'il vous plait et bienvenu à vous...... There's a lot of songs that really showcase Floors Vocals and what she's able to do. For example "Shoemaker" (one of their most recent ones, an hommage to a scientist, who always dreamt of walking the moon one day, but then he passed away before he was able to, so they brought some of his ashes to the Moon) or "Yours is an empty Hope". Basically you can't do anything wrong with any Nightwish song :D And then there's Sancta Terry by Epica, they performed live with Floor. Epicas singer (Name'*s Somine Simons) is a wonderful singer as well, you're gonna love both of them!
