Hello Matt Teck [ TECKreacts ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community 🤘

"whose this guy coming out"...that is guitarist extraordinaire Emppu Vuorinen, he was on the stage the whole time - he loves to move around the stage (sometimes running), and is never in one place for very long. His guitar skills are phenomenal, his playing always serves the song and is usually very melodic but make no mistake - when the song calls for it he is a master shredder and employs jaw-dropping tapping techniques. I, personally, found the glory of Floor Jansen about 5 years before she joined Nightwish. I will Forever(that's a hidden joke I'd love people to get) be thankful for that to a certain prog rock composer who gave her a big part on one of his albums. I earlier only knew the powerful voice of her sister Irene. Sadly, I can't just recommend that artist for a reaction, as the man only writes concept albums(Prog Rock Operas) and it's impossible to hear the full glory of his works from a single song. He is a masterful multiinstrumentalist and lyricist, a brilliant storyteller, and a genius at picking the right vocalist for the part in a way that will get the message across right. Well... Even if not as reaction material for your channel... for personal enjoyment... Ayreon. My first contact with it was, The Human Equation. A brilliant album from the middle of the discography, when his signature sound has already matured and he had access to some powerhouse vocalists from multiple music genres(that particular album, a 20 day trip through the mind of a comatose patient having conversations with personifications of his emotions to understand how he got there, includes James LaBrie of Dream Theater as the main character, Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth utilizing both his smooth, chilling vocals and his deep yet intelligible growls to portray two different faces of Fear, Irene Jansen as Passion, Devin Townsend as Rage, and more). It is also the most down to earth album in a shared universe spanning eight albums so far. Couldn't recommend anything more.

Floor does have a bit of classical training but not as much as you might think. She did 1 year of opera but she is by no means fully classically trained as many of her fans claim. It's mainly natural talent coupled with a lot of experience and hard work - she joined her first band After Forever when she was 16 and she's 43 now. An utterly mind blowing singer in my view.

Whats crazy too is shes said herself that she doesn't even particularly like opera singing. She just knew she had the voice for it and that when she was offered the Nightwish gig she knew she could do it because of watching Tarja perform. Since my first experience with this song on another reaction channel that long ago, I've ended up getting all of their albums on vinyl and this particular concert on Blu-ray. Every song is different, but everything is spectacularly thought out. Nightwish to me just hits different. Basically stuff I know I'm not going to over do it trying to get up there, although, strangely I can handle Stargazers and Come Cover Me, and outside my living room or car. I couldn't believe the guy actually had the tracks, so I thought, yup, this is an imperative 😁

Welcome to Nightwish. That 'guy' you keep asking about , is one of the founding members, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen. He, original lead singer Tarja Turunen, and the band mastermind, keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, started the band in 1996. Drummer Jukka Nevalainen joined in '97. Bassist seen here is the 2nd , Marko Hietala (joined 2001). Floor is the 3rd , and current singer, taking over mid tour in 2012, about 10 months before this concert. Tuomas writes and composes 90-95% of the songs. This song is a Tarja era song, from the 2004 5th album ,Once. Nope, not the closer here, song #13 of 15 at this show. Showtime/Storytime is the name of the DVD recording. The song is about an unrequited love. Yes, the orchestra is on track, recorded with the London Philharmonic. It is a flaming bulls head, that's the venue logo. Wacken (Vah-ken) Open Air in northern Germany, which is in cattle country. Multi day metal festival held every year , first weekend of August, in front of 80-85k fans. 82k here in 2013 for NW's headline set. Yes, please continue, this entire show was great, try Romanticide, Storytime, or Everdream next from here. And since you said you love symphonic music, there is another symphonic metal band recommended to check out, if you haven't heard them yet. They are called EPICA, like Nightwish they are great live, and also female fronted. Try "Code of Life" live in Amsterdam 2023 at AFAS Live, or "Consign To Oblivion" live at the Zenith in Paris.

He plays for Sabaton, a Swedish heavy metal band. You should check them out too. All of their songs are history-related. They're practically the Swedish version of Iron Maiden! Their song "1916" would be a good start. Hope this isn't a big info overload for you.

You're right that the 82,000 people in the crowd knew the song as it had been in Nightwish's songbook for many years previously, sung by both previous singers. For most of them though they had never heard Floor's version of it and were as blown away as the rest of us by it. You'll notice that, at the end of the performance, Floor gives kudos to Jukka for his incredible drumming. The orchestra is the London Philharmonic, who have worked with the band almost from their beginnings in 1996. Tuomas has collaborated with their arranger Pip Williams on pretty much every album. I always enjoy the reactions of real musicians to this band, as guys like you appreciate more than most of us can discern, making your reactions more meaningful than most. This rabbit hole is deep and will lead you to Floor's solo work, Auri, Sabaton and even Scrooge McDuck. I won't give the game away, but be prepared for an epic saga.

I love witnessing people's first time reactions to Nightwish, that never gets old. I have heard this song hundreds of times and still, I get goosebumps every single time. What makes this even cooler is when the reactors are musicians themselves, like you, and show some appreciation for the composition. I really enjoyed the deep dive into the complexity of it, the time signatures, the key changes and chords and, in particular, how you picked up on the different instruments in the orchestral interlude. Many reactors ignore that, you didn't, much appreciated! Honest and heartfelt reaction, I subscribed to see your journey with NW. I see you already got the Nightwish 101 from General Gabriel so I'm stoked to see more. Greetings from the German division of the Nightwish Army.

Nothing I can really add that hasn’t already been said elsewhere, but gotta say hi anyway. lol. Your reaction was eerily similar to my first hearing them about 8 years ago. I too am a musician (brass, piano, bass, and guitar) so I love seeing other musicians really experience the majesty that is Tuomas’ compositions. Dude is one of the best composers/songwriters of this century and so little known because their music is kinda niche. As far as what the song means/is about, my interpretation is that it’s mourning a love that has been set aside or thrown away. Reminiscing on the good times, railing against the bad times, and basically just paying homage to love that has become a ghost of its self.
