Did you know that Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" is actually a cover. That is Dolly Parton's song, although Dolly sings it a lot differently. She wrote it for her friend Porter Waggoner who gave her her first break on his television show. After several years of being on his show she decided that she wanted to go out on her own and wrote the song to let Porter Waggoner know how much she loved him for all that he did for her. Whitney's cover took on a while different meaning. She's written over 3000 songs for herself and many other artists, so I'm sure you've heard several and just don't know it. Dolly is the current Queen of Country. She recently was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When they originally told her that she was going to be inducted she turned them down because she's never sung Rock and Roll music. But the Rock and Roll fans wanted her in their hall of fame anyway. So she graciously accepted, and then she recorded a Rock and Roll album because she said that she didn't want to feel like a fraud. She is one of our national treasures.

Today's "country music" isn't country music. When we want to hear country, we have to go back to this classic era. It was good through the 90s and then started going downhill. Fortunately, we are still able to listen to these gems.

Willie Nelson is the only person on earth that's every smoked Snoop under the table, according to Snoop. I know you don't usually react to full songs, but sometime on your own have a look at "I'll Never Smoke Weed with Willie Again" from Toby Keith and Scott Emerick. It's kinda hilarious. And "Hurt" from Johnny Cash, a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song, is a must listen and watch. So emotional.

Growing up in Nashville, where I still live, I never really cared much for country music, but as I’ve gotten older, I have grown in being able to appreciate it more, especially the kind of performers listed here. I mean, you have to love Dolly Parton, not just for her singing, or her songwriting, both of which are incredible, but for all the things she has done for the sometimes poverty stricken area, where she grew up, and for all of her philanthropic work, including her Imagination Library, which provides books to children in several different countries. And I love the great Patsy Cline, who transcended the country genre and recorded song is that still sound as fresh as ever.

I am really surprised Glen Campbell wasn't on this list. He is great country singer with songs like Galveston, Wichita Lineman and Gentle on My Mind, but he is also an exceptional guitarist admired by some of the best in the business. As an original member of The Wrecking Crew, he backed up many notable artists like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys.

I don't think there was a single singer in this vid I didn't know and loved. I love many genres of music but country is what I grew up on and will always love. ❤

An "okie" is someone from Oklahoma. Muskogee is a town in that state. Okies and Arkies, (from Arkanasa) were for many generations denigrated after the disaster of the "Dust Bowl" Years in the 1930 that saw millions have to flee that area, and migrate to central Californina. I grew up listening to old country music like this, and it definitely is feel-good music. There's still some country that is kind of like this, but the sounds and voices will never be quite the same as the music back then. Country always makes me feel happy and comforted.

Country music started changing around the late 80s, early 90s. Shania Twain was kind of the catalyst (or one of them) for modern country, where it went from being a lot of twang, to being more pop. I am not a huge country fan, but don’t mind listening to it once in awhile and like both versions. I actually love the old country, when they speak a song. Like Convoy. Just sounds so cool. I do absolutely love Alison Krause’s song “When you Say Nothing at All”. Just a beautiful song and her voice is just hauntingly beautiful.

One of my favorite subsets of country music is “truckin country”, it’s popularity was from the late 60s thru the mid 70s. Some of the artist to check out are Dave Dudley, Red Sovine, the Willis Brothers, and Red Simpson.

SUGGESTION - There is an old USA TV show called "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr" (1993) - starring Bruce Campbell. It was only on for one season because it was too different for some people. If you like SciFi, cowboys and Bruce Campbell's quirkiness, you will love this series and yes, you will need to watch it several times to get all the easter eggs. I hope you can find it. You may have to look for used CD's like I did.

Quick note: Not for sure how honest this is but I've heard through the grapevine of the music world that "Hurt" (An original by NIN Trent Reznor) was freely given to Johnny Cash to sing. the story goes that Mr. Cash contacted Mr. Reznor to ask if he could sing "Hurt" on an album and Mr. NIN said "Mr. Cash, you can sing any song I have." This goes back to when Cash met Reznor's grandmother in person after a concert. Reznor's grandmother loved Cash and was quoted to be one of his greatest fans. Trent Reznor was raised by his grandmother, so he was extrememly grateful for Cash meeting her.

A live concert with Willie Nelson is like hometown comfort. I had the privilege of sitting at one of his concerts here in Waco Texas. He was born and raised just a few miles north of here. After the official concert he spent at least another 45 minutes just talking to us and taking requests… it was like we where sitting in his living room relaxed and having a great time. Minis the weed! Lol
