Americans, from my experience, don't tend to use the word "queue" to refer to a physical line of people, instead using "line". We use "queue" more often to refer to an ordered backlog of something, like being put into a tech support queue after calling a helpdesk. We don't use "queue" as a verb at all, and would say "waiting in line" instead of "queueing".
@kentgrady9226
@kentgrady9226 2 жыл бұрын
You're right. It's an antiquated word in American English. During the Depression, people "queued up in the soup line" or "stood in the relief dole queue". I've never heard the word used by an American in the context Brits use and understand it.

Most people know what queue means, but in practice it is not used to mean a literal line of people. Its use is confined to a computer context usually (the print queue for documents, for example). Here you "line up" and are "waiting in line"
@mildredpierce4506
@mildredpierce4506 2 жыл бұрын
We say things like: standing in line, a long line, the line was long, cutting in line, lining up, getting out of line, Front of the line, back of the line. I’ve seen queue only in reference to a computer program with a list of items such as items that are meant to be sent somewhere else. Those items go into a general queue or distribution. Or in the case of Netflix or blockbuster videos, you will place your desired videos in the queue.

1:27 we would say we’re “waiting in line” or “standing in line” or just “in line” (whether you’re standing, in a car, etc.), if somebody tells you to stand in a line they would say to “line up” or “get in line/get in a line”. I’ve been to and lived in many states and have never heard somebody from the US say “queue” for any instance other than “queue” to start something like a movie or song (not saying there aren’t people here that do, I’ve just never heard it)

For service/ticket/etc it is "line". If you are on hold, you hear "your call will be answered in the order it was received". If we use the word "queue" it is typically in reference for something non-personal, if used at all-- something like "the busses are all queued up and ready to do their routes once the drivers arrive".

The reason this conference is called the Big Ten is that earlier there were only 10 universities in the conference. The other four teams were added but the name the Big Ten was kept because of the long history and affection for the name. I’m a graduate of the University of Minnesota, when the conference was truly The Big Ten.

Michigan Stadium has hosted several soccer matches in the recent past. I went to a game between Real Madrid vs Manchester United there in 2014. The game attendence was over 110,000 if I recall. And I still have the Real Madrid scarf I got with the ticket; it's actually really nice, thick with very tight stitching. The reason the world cup chose the venues they did has less to do with the stadiums than the accommodations around them. Each site has to have plenty of hotels, easy access to airports, and everything else you need when you're going to have thousands upon thousands of guests from all over the world. That's especially true since '26 is the first world cup with 48 countries instead of 32. So as much as I love my hometown of Ann Arbor, there simply isn't the necessary infrastructure in a college town of 125,000 people to host such an event; especially compared to cities like New York and LA. Though I am kind of mad they didn't put any Great Lakes/Midwest cities as hosts. They're all coastal cities and cities in Texas.

I'm a little older - so my usage may be slightly different - but until I started using electronic printers, the only place I ever encountered the word "queue" was either in English literature or movies/television shows. I've lined up, stood in line, formed a line, and get irked with people who "jump" a line or "cut" the line. The only queues I ever wait in are the ones on a busy printer.

The college stadiums are often much larger than pro stadiums, but are also much older, Ohio Stadium for example being about 100 years old. The football programs along with basketball fund all other college sports which overwhelmingly lose money. In the older stadiums comfort and luxury are not a priority!

I've lived in Madison, WI since 1978, and have NEVER attended a UW football game. In fact, I lived in Madison for nearly five years before it even dawned on me that the UW-Madison WAS a BigTen school. From what I've heard from people who have attended games, unless you're a die-hard fan or alumnus, sitting in the packed stadium during a home game is a wretched experience.

“Recruiting” in the context of college football refers to the recruitment of high school football players. Clearly, college football is pretty damn big here so as you can imagine, recruitment of high school athletes is also a massive thing here. It’s so big, it gets national coverage on ESPN and at local levels too. You can have 16-17 year old kids who are already big names in their states all because of the debate on which college they’ll choose to commit to. This also extends to college basketball too.
@blackphoenix32
@blackphoenix32 2 жыл бұрын
To expand on Alex's point, recruits will be invited to games by the coaching staff to see what game days are like for the players. After pre-game warmups, they'll be taken into the stands, or, in Rutgers' case, the recruiting lounge to watch the game itself.

College football is generally the largest revenue generator for universities, especially in the larger conferences such as the SEC and Big 10. These large football programs generate hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue that in turn pays for many of the other sports programs that are less profitable or not profitable at all for the university. This football revenue also pays for a ton of other expenses and needs around the university

No matter how much parking you find at the stadium, there's not going to be enough. Speaking from personal experience (I spent a year working as a parking attendant for campus events), while Spartan Stadium has large parking lots immediately north of it, and a number of other lots nearby, for events at the stadium, every parking lot (and ramp, and a number of grass athletic fields) on campus is drafted into action for prepaid parking passes. If you don't have a prepaid pass, you'll have to park somewhere off-campus and walk to the stadium (distances up to a mile and a half). Even some of the on-campus parking is nearly a mile from the stadium, but shuttle bus service is offered between those distant lots and the stadium itself. And part of the culture of college football is tailgate parties, which means arriving very early and just hanging out with portable grills and such until game time. When I was working the football games (as a student), I had to report in at 5AM to get my assignment and pick up my gear (a Safety Orange vest), and be at my assigned parking lot by 5:30AM so that I could allow only those who had passes for that lot in. Very often, I'd get there by 5:20 or so and there would *already* be some people in the lot (I'd collect passes from those who had them and, while I didn't actually *enforce* it, suggest those who didn't move their cars elsewhere)... when the earliest start time I saw was noon, and there was one game that didn't even start until 5PM.

One of the main differences between college and NFL stadiums is bench seats in college stadiums vs NFL stadiums with mostly individual chair-backed seating. The latter is more comfortable, but then it can limit the number of spectators based on the configuration of the stadium. Bench seats are cheaper, of course, and allow for a lot more people... even if your place on a particular bench is still designated byh a seat number on your ticket. Many university stadia do have areas of chair-backed seating for people who donate a lot of money to a university's sports teams - called athletic donors or "boosters".

Nebraska's Memorial stadium is officially just over 85,000, but like most other stadiums it typically exceeds its "official" capacity on Gameday.

2:20 I feel the complete opposite Kabir. I love the stadiums that aren't surrounded by a giant parking lot/car park. It gives them a more authentic feeling as if they're part of the area.

No Kabir, we don't usually say queue here in the states, I don't believe I could ever get used to saying queue. Here, you get in line, wait in line, line up, take your place in line, long drive thru lines, long traffic line, the word line is so much a part of the everyday lexicon.

The gate receipts are significant, but the really big money is now TV with the Big Ten Network. The new contract is for $7 billion over 7 years.

The BigTen before expansion were all midwestern public land grant schools with the exception of Northwestern University. The stadiums would therefore be owned by their states so funding would be financed by taxes, bonds, and alumni donations as well as funds generated by the program itself. These institutions are the prides of their respective states.

In college you recruit the best high school players in the nation and try to convince them to come play at your University, so the recruiting lounge is for recruits who have come to visit your campus on that weekend. Game days are some of the top recruiting weekends with usually 50+ recruits in attendance. Yes, Michigan Stadium is the Big House. As for building a Stadium the size of The Horseshoe, Minnesota and Baylor have built 2 of the newest stadiums at $266M and $303M. They are more than half the size. Ohio State's stadium would probably cost around $700M brand new. Who builds these stadiums? TV Contracts are massive multi billion dollar per year deals. Rich Alumni also chips in. You should do SEC stadiums next.

That's why it's known as the horse shoe , before they did the expansion and closed in the end of the stadium and added the upper decks it really did look like a horse shoe , yeah you guessed it I'm from Ohio lived less then 8 miles from there my whole 64 years

Iowa's long time Coach Hayden Fry was an old timey psych major and back then pink was thought to be a placid color but now we know it is the exact opposite as it is in the red family but it is legendary. The big advantage to Kinnick is that the fans are right on the teams. Only a few feet between fans and the benches so opposing teams get an earful

A lot of football players who played in the Big Ten have said that Iowa is the hardest place to play their fans are closer to the field than anywhere else and they're so rowdy. I'm from Iowa so in a homer but I cant imagine stadiums getting much louder than kinnick

I played hockey in some very loud away barns. Loved to play in front of a hostile crowd. Not always intimidating for everyone. Some didn't like it but some of us fed off it. Just great atmosphere.

College football is also a multi billion industry lol. Fox alone pays almost 3 billion for the big ten conference. ESPN CBS etc pays the same thing for some conferences

Stadiums renovations are paid for by the school. Sometimes with bonds backed by the state, oftentimes by huge donations from boosters (extremely wealthy alumni). For example, Phil Knight of Nike has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to his alma mater, The University of Oregon. Being a college football coach isn't just about winning, a very important part of the job is keeping boosters happy so that they keep giving. It's just as much about fundraising as it is football.

College football tickets are cheaper than pro tickets I think, and on top of that students (of the school in question) usually get a discount. Nonetheless, if you're regularly filling all the seats, those tickets add up, and then on top of that you've got the concession stand revenue, plus merch, so you do eventually reach a point where you can afford to upgrade the stadium, with enough left over to pay for some athletic scholarships.

Stadium upgrades and such are generally paid for by boosters. Like donors. So they are privately funded through donations.
