Law Enforcement Cooperation Fact: The real-life FBI's Behavioral Science Unit assisted in the making of this movie. Acting Is Reacting Fact: Jodie Foster claims that during the first meeting between Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling, Sir Anthony Hopkins's mocking of her southern accent was improvised on the spot. Foster's horrified reaction was genuine since she felt personally attacked. She later thanked Hopkins for generating such an honest reaction.

Ted Levine was great as Buffalo Bill. Unfortunately, it made it very difficult for me to watch the TV series "Monk," where he plays a good guy, because I could never get Buffalo Bill out of my head.

Fun fact: The actor who plays Buffalo Bill, Ted Levine, also played Captain Stottlemeyer in the series Monk. Who would have thunk it? Goes to show what an incredible actor he is to be able to pull off such totally different characters.

I saw Jodie Foster in an interview saying she and Hopkins didn’t speak the entire time of filming. At the end, when they finally spoke, she apologized and told him she was terrified of him. He said, he was terrified of HER. They both were phenomenal but Hopkins was perfect as Hannibal Lecter. Great movie!!!

Actually Cuckoo's Nest which also won the Big 5 is kind of like it. Mental wards, sadistic characters, doomed heroes. Nicholson is at least as good as Hopkins is here and Louise Fletcher is amazing as Nurse Ratchet. Add in a young Christopher Lloyd and Danny DeVito and the supporting cast is just as strong.

I read the book prior to the movie being made. When it w as announced that Anthony Hopkins was cast as Lecter, I couldn't believe it. Had seen him in other productions and felt sorry for his characters, even the ones who weren't the good guy. He seemed to have this bewildered innocence about him. No way was he going to carry off playing H. Lecter. Am glad to say I've never been so wrong about a casting choice in all my life. All Oscars richly deserved.

I had read the book with the idea it was just a random mystery novel that my Mother had given me to read with no review from her about it. So, I was surprised when it was made into a movie. Not that I didn't enjoy the novel, I did, but didn't have reason to think it would possibly be made into a movie. I do recommend he watch the other movies And, the tv series Hannibal. Manhunter(1981) was another movie based on the novel Red Dragon also written by Thomas Harris involving Hannibal Lecter. Although, I don't think it was as good as the more current movies.

The most well crafted horror movie you'll ever watch. Horror movies today are just a gore-fest. This movie is all about suspense, and since movies made in 2022 are all about fast pacing to keep younger people engaged, there's no time for suspense. That's what makes this movie terrifying. Not because they show a lot of blood and guts. They don't. They're very careful about how much they do show you, because the more it's left to your imagination, the scarier it can be. If you want to watch a good sequel to this, go with Red Dragon. It's the only one of the series after this that is really worth watching. Hannibal is just a gore fest and has a lot of plot holes. I love the camera angles in this.

When Hannibal said to the senator "love your suit", he was mocking her both in that that she invests thousands on expensive clothes rather than the safety of her daughter, and also because he knew that Buffalo Bill was going to make a suit from her daughter. The irony!

As you could see her daughter lived alone. Which means she chose to live a normal life aside from senator mom, which means she didn't want to live in a golden cage so mom could not be blamed. Is how I see it

Lector played with his food. That was his dichotomy. He did like her power suit (that's what women's suits were called back then). I think he wanted to roll around in her misery. I think it's him laughing at her by saying she was powerless in her power suit.

I always thought the guy who played Buffalo Bill didn’t get enough recognition. He did a excellent job of playing a lunatic. For two very different movies watch Animal House and The Blues Brothers. The latter talked a lot of Blues legends out of retirement to play in the movie.

I think you’d love The Others. It’s one of the best suspense/horror movies ever. Nicole Kidman is fantastic in it. And the twist is incredible. Please give it a watch!

I'm always making connections to themes, genres, and actors, so I thought he'd like Foster's early performance with Martin Sheen in The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane; then follow Sheen to Stephen King's The Dead Zone with Christopher Walken

There *was* a Lecter movie before Silence. From the director of Heat: Manhunter (1986) is an adaptation of the book Red Dragon. Brian Cox is quite good as Hannibal.

There was a day a few years ago when some roommates I had were watching the wheelchair scene in Manhunter while I was coincidentally watching the wheelchair scene in the more recent Hannibal TV series in my own room. It was a really bizarre coincidence

Kabir, I love when you watch horror movies!! You yelling at the actors is exactly what I do!! I always scream asking them if they are really that stupid and apparently they are 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I've seen this movie and it's really a good psychological thriller, my granddaughter is going to university for criminal psychology and forensic psychology, she's a very quiet young lady and I would have never guessed this is her interest for a future job, I even asked her if I have to worry about her because my mother always said to beware of the quiet ones!!

You should check out ‘the making of’ for this one.. when Clarice visits Lechter after his transfer & she tells him about the lambs.. in the take the USED, a crew member dropped something.. & it was LOUD.. and Jodie Foster never faltered.. THAT scene got her the Oscar.. & the director knew it.. originally that scene was supposed to include flashbacks, but Jonathan Demming, the director, KNEW there was no way to cut away from Jodie’s performance..

When Ridley Scott was prepping for the sequel Hannibal (also great), he was trying to understand the intense connection between Hannibal and Clarice. Then he finally figured it out. They were “reluctant soulmates.” Chillingly accurate description.

Jodie won an Oscar from the one single scene when she was talking to Hannibal Lecter in that scene when he was in the cage and she was telling him about lambs screaming... and then the silence. Sir Hopkins was brilliant and terrifying but the actor who played "Buffalo Bill'' also did a great job. "It puts the lotion on it's skin or else it gets the hose again." is an iconic line from this movie.

I was a senior in HS when this came out in 91’.. I was actually at a movie theater in the south suburb of Chicago, Calumet City.. when I first saw this film… and when the fbi said in the film that they were ascending into Calumet City, south suburb of Chicago.. the entire movie theatre all gasped at the same time! Lol.. we were all on edge from this movie and to hear that - it stuck in my head all these years- best horror/psychological thriller ever- incredible acting!

This was the second movie with Hannibal Lecter in it. The first was directed by Michael Mann (Miami Vice), it's title was "Man Hunter". It was released in 1986 and I had a very tiny role in the movie. I played a guard at the mental hospital where Lecter was held. When our hero investigator leaves from a meeting with Lecter he's a bit freaked out, runs down a twisting ramp and at the bottom I stand up from my security desk occupying the entire screen for maybe 1 second. I had fun working on that movie for one day.

Yes....this movie is top notch. Anthony Hopkins and Jody Foster (as well as Scott Glenn) were already really famous actors before this movie was made. Regarding the character of Hannibal: If he "liked" you (whatever that means for a psychopath), he's perfectly charming and courteous, although he might invite you over for dinner and serve you a human entree without telling you. If he thinks you're rude or annoying, you're toast. The conversations between the two characters (Lechter and Starling) are the most interesting part of the movie to me. He knew exactly who Buffalo Bill was (as Buffalo Bill had been the one that decapitated his patient), he (psychopathically) makes her figure it out herself. But he DOES help her. He leads her to the head, gives her feedback that is valid and even adds to the case notes addressing her directly. One detail mentioned in the book that I can't remember if mentioned in the film: When he knew he was getting busted, he destroyed all his patient files....because they were confidential. It's not as if he has NO code. It's just a very weird code.

Great reaction! Here is the order in which the Hannibal movies came out after Silence of the Lambs. - Hannibal (2001) - Red Dragon (2002) which is a prequel to Silence of the Lambs - Hannibal Rising (2007) another prequel which shows how Hannibal became a serial killer and cannibal.

Just a couple of bits of trivia for you. Silence of the Lambs is one of only 3 movies to ever win the Big 5 at the Oscars, that is Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay. The scene where Bill dances in front of the mirror was improvised, in the script it just said he stood looking at himself in the mirror, but Ted Levine used the description from the book, where Bill dances in front of the mirror and admires himself, he also had a few shots of tequila before filming that scene.

The actor who played "Buffalo Bill' Is Ted Levine. He went on to play a Detective (Leland Stottlemeyer) in the TV show "Monk". It's hard to believe it's the same guy as in this movie. I had watched "Monk" for years and had no idea.

That character was almost completely an invention of Anthony Hopkins from the mannerisms to the way he said things. He consistently said, "I think he would have done it this way" or "I think he would have said it like this". He scared Jody Foster so bad he had to leave the room just so she could manage her lines. The director was smart enough to just get the hell out of his way.

You should check out the 1986 movie “Manhunter”. It was the original Red Dragon movie that later was remade and starred Ralph Feinnes. Brian Cox plays Hannibal Lecter! It was the first movie I saw with that character in it and came out just 3 years after the book “Red Dragon”. Very well done!

Q ~ who was Clarice dating at the end of the movie? A: Noble pilcher the entomologist playing chess with bugs... Noble Pilcher ~ "What do you do when you're not detecting?" Sparking interest: (If you didn't notice at the end of the movie after she receives her badge she can be seen with a group of people prior to taking the phone call with Hannibal lecter. Two of those people are none other than pilcher and his friend, which would indicate that enough time is passed since their meeting that they would now be comfortable with each other enough for her to invite him to her graduation) Deduction: why would Noble pilcher, a relatively insignificant character, whom did nothing more than notify Clarice about what type of moth was found in a victim's throat; information of which had no significant weight to any part of the film other than to introduce the kind, and confident, yet eccentric Noble Pilcher to the protagonist Clarice, not only attend an FBI student graduation, but one specifically for Clarice? Mind you a woman he has only met once in his life, and even more so one that has nothing to do with his line of work other than the fact that she happened to need a entomologist at the moment. Conclusion: Noble Pilcher, a completely insignificant character in every possible means, other than for audience based comedic relief, specifically attended clarice's graduation ceremony because she invited him. One can conclude something similar to the following occurred... • upon their interaction, after his flirtatious moment, he persisted in asking her out. More than likely after the discovery of the moth's breed, but before she left the building. In the end for whatever reason she said yes. • Following the capture of Buffalo Bill they began dating. One can assume graduation did not occur until well after the escape of Hannibal lecter considering that he made his way to a foreign country since then, mind you after getting plastic surgery to change his looks in the book, before specifically contacting her during her graduation. • This means that Noble Pilcher and Clarice were together long enough for her to invite him to the graduation, but not only that, but comfortable enough with his group of friends, or rather friend, for his friend to attend as well. Competition: One can conclude from watching the film that there may have been sexual tension between Clarice and Crawford. However, I do not believe that anything would come with such a relationship, as Clarice cannot help but look at Crawford as a father figure. That and Crawford would not bring himself to attempt to date a former student as that may be considered taking advantage of his power and position. Which in my opinion is why he looks so downhearted when he walks away from the ceremony leaving in the end. He wants Clarice, but he will not bring himself to go after her. READ THE BOOK! This is one film that strictly follows the storyline of the book. It swept the Oscars.Oscar's. He ad libbed the whole "sniffing thru his mouth" bit. Just a note, the actress who played the part of the naked victim, on the day it was filmed, it was her birthday and unless I'm terribly mistaken, they celebrated it on set. Since Covid, my memory sucks---brain fog is real! Next movie, "Interview With A Vampire" with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt--it's the best vampire movie of all time!

Manhunter from 1986 is the first movie to feature Hannibal Lecter. It's an adaptation of the novel Red Dragon (which was also filmed again in 2002).

Of course now you must watch Hannibal. Which is really good and then, my favorite, Hannibal Rising, which is like a prequel and goes into Hannibal's childhood and early life. It is phenomenal.

One of the strange things about filming this movie is that the actors playing Buffalo Bill and Ruth Martin were unnaturally close and spent all their time together between takes, to the extent that it creeped everyone else out on set.
