One of the reasons this movie holds up is because of the way Melissa is portrayed. Not as the other woman causing issues, she's someone you genuinely like and care for, and she handles the ending of the relationship so well, she understands.
@squidproquo1130
@squidproquo1130 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking this exactly. Her attitude and approach with the relationship had an impact and definitely made an impression on me as a young girl when this came out. And then it's odd to think about how such a normal, reasonable, mature attitude like hers is so rarely depicted. I guess dysfunction is more theatrical? And what is the impact to people when in turn they are seeing relationships modeled in these unhealthy but dramatic ways and thinking this is how relationships work?

Real life tornado chasers really appreciated this movie, so much so that when Bill Paxton died, they positioned themselves in the midwest with their storm chasing vehicles. Their positions on GPS spelled out his initials as they were hundreds of miles apart. Pretty impressive feat. I was in an F5 tornado at the age of 10, one of the largest ever recorded. I didn't go into meteorology as a profession, but have been fascinated with tracking weather as a hobby ever since. Look up the Xenia Ohio 1974 tornado. That's the one that destroyed my town. I'm from Oklahoma and have lived through quite a few tornadoes ..have stories that would make the hairs on your arm raise. This was very surprisingly accurate. F5's are not very common thank God...F2 's and F3's or bad enuff and can cause serious death and damage. The debris flying is what makes tornadoes lethal. This movie never grows old they did an amazing job!! So .glad you got to watch this!! Love your reactions!!

One bit of real crazy thing about this movie Twister. Is in 1996 when that movie came out I saw a story on the News on tv that there was a drive-in movie theater, I cannot remember which state, but the people watching a movie in their cars and suddenly a real tornado hit them. The movie they were all watching was "Twister" there is a scene in the movie where a tornado hits a movie theater as well but this one was in real life. Very insane coincidence!

Fun fact! My husband had a drama teacher who was friends with one of the assistant directors of this movie ( K. C. Hodenfield) and durning the summer his teacher was always a background actor in one of Holdenfield's movie's and would come back to the Midwest with all these stories. Well, this time, he came back with one of the famous blue shirts Bill Paxton wears throughout this movie. There were several. It has his initials in it, and he gave it to my husband. It still hangs in our closet. (BTW my husband says his teacher is some medic you see for half a second in this movie)

FLORIDA MAN HERE. A word to the wise: if you're ever faced with a tornado scooping you up and you think that tying yourself to a pipe that runs deep underground will save you, JUST KEEP RUNNING. A force that can rip trees out of the ground and decimate houses will ABSOLUTELY be a giant blender to a human body. The filmmakers did a spectacular job at showing the kind of power and damage that a tornado can do, but that's the one part that they got wrong, and has been a colossal joke among fans of this movie for years. Maybe parts of their forearms would be left strapped to that pipe, but the rest of them would have been turned into jam.

The explosions you always see during tornadoes are the transformers on electric poles. In elementary school I lived in Omaha Nebraska right in tornado alley. I’ve seen more than my share of tornadoes. The one time I remember the most was on the 4th of July when my family had just gotten to the hill where people watched the fireworks and as soon as we got to the top my dad turned around and just told us to run back to the car. He actually saw the tornado when he crested the hill. We raced home (about 15 miles) and got into our shelter when people in the neighborhood started showing up because we had the best shelter on the street. Thankfully it didn’t hit our street but it came within 2 blocks. The man who is now my fiancée lived 4 houses down and he remembers his family going to my house that night. I’ve seen a pine needle that went straight through a tree trunk after a tornado before. That was mind blowing

I love all the homages to other iconic films from the past, especially The Wizard of Oz! The dog in the beginning, Toby, is the same breed as Toto. There was a cow flying the the tornado in Wizard of Oz. Of course, the instrument pack is Dorothy. When they are at the motel, a Judy Garland movie is playing in the background. I also love the big movie screen flying apart right when Jack is breaking apart the door in The Shining. I saw the trailer for Twister in the movie theater before anyone had heard of it. There was a scene in the trailer that never made it in the movie. A piece of a building flew directly at the camera. So cool on the big screen!

Twister is probably my all time favorite movie, I watched this over 100 times as a kid even though it terrified me and gave me nightmares. Sone kids were obsessed with dinosaurs and have dinosaur Trapper Keepers cause Jurassic Park but my friends and I were obsessed with tornadoes. Then a year or two after this movie came out around 1997 or 1998 we went on a class trip to the Franklin Institute that just recently opened a tornado exhibit that had the actual one of the Dorothy props from this movie and was able to touch it. I'm NOT proud of this but some of the paint was starting to peel so I peeled a tiny piece of paint off that was part of Dorothy's blue dress. I think I still have it. But now that I'm older I realize that was a pretty sh*tty thing to do.

I've lived all my life in a place where tornadoes are not uncommon. I'm 62 and I've never seen one. Two times I think there was one that barely grazed my property, causing tree damage....You just have to be aware of the weather. It IS wise to have a place to go when tornadoes happen (basement/inner room/storm cellar). And, I know it sounds insane, but it truly is absolutely possible for a tornado to pick up farm equipment, trucks, move houses, and animals and people.

RIP Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman It's hard to imagine ANY sequel to this masterpiece without the two most standout characters of the original, and genuine amazing humans. What an unbelievable thrill ride this was and movie theater experience as a kid watching this. I personally lived in tornado alley for years in the Texas region, around the Dallas/Fort Worth area and various others and tornado drills were a real thing growing up in school; just as regular or more as fire drills were. Been in two tornadoes that I was fortunate to avoid serious harm, simply by genuine luck if anything. An enormous well built theater as we were watching Titanic I think, that kept us sheltered (the sight from the exit door was out of this world). The other was as a 5th grade living in Plano, Texas that we avoided just out of sheer fortune; bundled up together with family in the closet. I'll tell you, growing up in those regions just in my own experience, heavy thunderstorms are my happy weather. Call me crazy but I love a grey sky. Claps of Thunder, lightening, and rain get me all excited and anxious at the same time.

Tornadoes really aren't that common, but severe thunderstorms are. When the sirens go off we all go outside and chat up the neighbors and look at the sky and then when it starts to "go green" we slowly drift back to our porches and listen to the local weather and watch until the hail starts. After the hail it goes dead silent before the wind really picks up - and that's when you need to head inside. It's so bad around here that we have signs every five hundred yards on the the major roadways that say "When Thunder Roars Go Indoors ⚡" 😊

One crazy aspect to tornadoes is that they are totally unpredictable. Like Joe says it can spare houses right next to yours and destroy yours. Houses totally untouched while houses around them are levelled. Playing cards stuck into trees, stems of straw into the sides of houses . . . . it's almost supernatural.

Not from a tornado, but when I was with the Red Cross, I have seen a house that looked like it was rolled a quarter mile from it's home site onto the center of a roadway, as a result of storm surge during Hurricane Rita (on our way to Cameron, LA). More likely knocked over and floated down the highway. Someone had painted the house address in big white letters on its side, with "Please return to this address". I can't see a tornado rolling a structure, picking it up and tossing maybe.

As someone who studied to be a Meteorologist and wanted to be a storm chaser for a time, this movie holds a special place for me. Still holds up, AND we're finally getting a sequel after all these years. Sadly, Bill Paxton passed away a few years ago and only Helen Hunt is confirmed to be in the sequel (supposedly it'll be about their kid(s) taking up the mantle with an even more insane tornado outbreak). As for when Bill Paxton passed, actual storm chasers in the mid-west etc used GPS and all lined up to spell out his initials on a google map of the GPS because of how actually accurate this movie is to the storm chaser crowd. Obviously not super accurate when it comes to the tornadoes (though not far off to be fair) the storm chaser life is quite a bit similar to the movie, so they paid tribute to Bill Paxton.

They used to have a Twister attraction at Disney World. It was badass.

I hate to correct you on this, but unfortunately, the Twister attraction wasn't at Disney at all. The attraction was located at Universal Studios Florida & the attraction was called "Twister: Ride It Out." I really hope that helps you out! 😀

I’ve seen the “Dorothy” prop from this movie. It’s 650 feet underground in the Strataca salt mine in Kansas. I think they also had a whole bunch of other films stored down there along with the Superman costume from one of the movies. Pretty neat place to visit.

Coincidentally, my sister-in-law told me they had a tornado watch yesterday out where they are in Texas. The actor you are talking about driving the truck was the late Bill Paxton. You didn't notice the antagonist is Wesley from Princess Bride.

My wife and I watched this movie at a drive-in theatre when it was new. We were in my convertible. It became windy with distant lightning and thunder while we were watching the movie. It was exhilarating! Will never forget it!

One of my favorite disaster movies and definitely my favorite tornado movie. There's one called Tornado starring Bruce Campbell that I really like as well. I have a whole collection of disaster movies...well movies in general to be honest. Saw this in the theater abd the surround sound whenever the tornados appeared actually made it feel like the seats were shaking.

My favorite movie reference to natural disasters. The truck continued to drive through the corn field was due to him setting the Cruise Control. And yes, houses do actually roll across the highway.

Still one of my favorite movies till today. The father dying at the beginning still traumatizes me. I live in the Midwest. I have never seen a tornado before. And don't plan to. I have relatives near tornado alley. Everytime there is nasty weather. Or a tornado near them. I ask my dad to call. Luckily their house is protected. Sending prayers to those/communities affected by tornadoes. Very tragic and sad. The communities/families that were affected.

Completely fair rating. I love this movie and yeah, it never gets old. I don’t know for sure, but I think most of it was pretty realistic. And those sound effects. The growling and roars get me every time.

I take it you don't have cruise control on your cars in the UK. Set your speed, press the button, and your vehicle will follow that speed until you tap the breaks.

I was always terrified of storms and tornadoes as a child. I was in my 30s when I saw this movie in the theater and I screamed at more than one part in it lol The first five minutes are as exciting as they last five minutes. Seeing it on the big screen was phenomenal. At the time, the special effects were truly amazing❤

I'm a native Minnesotan, tornado alley is part of us. The scariest part IMHO is at night, when everyone is asleep. Although we, like most here have a basement, ours is extremely small, within 6ft of the furnace and gas water heater. I'm not convinced it's the best area if a tornado comes through. 😮

Fun fact: one of the meteorologists you hear on the TV at Meg's house and the drive-in theater motel, Rick Mitchell, is the chief meteorologist for NBC5 in Dallas/Ft. Worth where I live. He is a FANTASTIC meteorologist and does a stellar job covering dangerous weather events. I've been an amateur weather buff all of my life, my sister is a storm chaser with SkyWarn and Spotter Network, and both of us trust him implicitly.

Tornadoes are one of the most fascinating subjects of weather. They're capable of great destruction, and yet, can be remarkably gentle. One report showed a basket of eggs had been picked up by a tornado, and it was set down without a single egg cracking. Another report showed a group of school children in Japan getting picked up by a tornado, and it set them down without so much as a bruise.A product of nature being capable of so much destruction, yet also being capable of being gentle. It's amazing.

Mark 18:31. This movie is why I've been wanting a "Dodge Ram" like his ever since the movie was new and "Dodge" was promoting it ahead of time. By the way, my best friend is a custodian for "OU" in Norman, Oklahoma, and one of the buildings that he cleans in is the meteorology department that has a museum with stuff from the movie, including the rival instruments. 😎 I have yet to take the tour, though.

Mark 1:46. Howdy! 🤠 Yesterday, I almost viewed this, but I didn't feel like writing then, so I put it off until now. First, that's an "oil pump"! We used to have several on our property back when we had 160 acres. (By the way! We didn't get any royalties because they were here before we were.) Now we're down to a measly 5 acres. But anyway, an "oil rig" is what they use to drill with! A truck hauls it from place to place during the oil exploration phase. Except when they are at sea and become mobile "oil platforms" that get towed by tugs. An "oil derrick" is built on the site. They are seen in a lot of movies and "WB" cartoons. The theme park "Six Flags Over Texas" claims to have "The World's Tallest Oil Derrick"! It looks like a red "Eiffel Tower"! Now that I have that out of the way! Ahem. The movie means a lot to me as segments of it were made in Pauls Valley, Garvin County, Oklahoma & Chickasaw Nation. When I drove through one of the outdoor locations, an on-set night watchman stopped me to ask about the local nightspots. We talked for so many hours, with my car engine idling, that dawn happened before we knew it! Local immigrants were showing up to sneak some fishing in at their usual spots, and he had to go deal with them and so ended our hours long conversation. The diner built for the movie in Maysville still exists but not as such. The locals there already had their favorite diners and didn't need an extra one. There weren't enough tourists to keep it open as a diner. So now it is used for storage, though the exterior looks the same. At least it did during my last drive by it. 🤔 For the locals, it was set too far away. All that's left though of the scenes set at the first local reservoir known as the "Pauls Valley City Lake" is during the end credits as seen from an aerial view. Locals that got to be used during the making of the movie were very disappointed not to see themselves in the final cut of the movie after telling people that they were in it! Unless the business died off over time, people can take the "Official Twister Tour" of the various locations in our state Actress Helen Hunt's family has a big ranch in the state. It is somewhere north of the city of Ada and, by coincidence, I have driven by the big entrance with their name "HUNT" above it! Actress Jennifer Garner bought out her grandparents' big farm where the plants used for her line of health and beauty products are grown. Reba McEntire's family has a 6,000-acre ranch!
