This film caused what was called the "Twister Effect" where loads of people got into meteorology and storm chasing. Many modern storm chasers acknowledge that Twister wasn't very accurate, but still inspired them to get into their field.

That’s very cool. So it’s essentially the meteorological world’s version of the Indiana Jones movies. Those movies are even less accurate to archeology, but many American archeologists cite one or more of those movies for igniting their love for studying history.

Kristen thought this movie was about the cut-throat, high stakes world of professional Twister; the game ;) I love how "the new woman" in this movie isn't portrayed as an absolutely nightmarish shrew and alos gracefully bows out with her head held high once she sees the writing on the wall. It's so rare in movies.

You've just watched the most legendary movie. This is what I grew up with as a SKYWARN storm chaser. It never gets old. Seeing it brings back great memories. The movie is very realistic aside from a few scenes. My family has a tradition. At the beginning of storm season we cook Aunt Meg's dinner to kick it off. It brings good luck to the year's storm chasing. I myself will listen to Van Halen's "Humans being" on the way to a major storm. Get ready for "TWISTERS" July 19th, 2024. Will be based off Bill Paxton's original idea for a sequel. Storm chasers like I & big chasers like Reed Timmer have already been watching them make the movie. They know they CANNOT screw it up. Timmer himself said "Go big, or go home." Rest in peace ❤ Bill Paxton "The extreme" & Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Us storm chasers miss them. Wish he was still here to see his ideas be brought to life.

...No? The original pioneer of storm chasing is generally agreed to be David Hoadley, who started storm chasing in 1958. By the 60's, there was a handful of storm chasers working with state highway patrols to track and monitor extreme weather. In 1969, the Alberta Hail Studies project became the first storm chasers to have actual funding for their work, and in 1972 the University of Oklahoma began the Tornado Intercept Project, which was the first major coordinated project to specifically chase tornadoes. This movie came out in 1996. You may be thinking of storm chasing tourism - THAT'S what was kicked off by this movie. The storm chaser community knew they'd be flooded with a bunch of amateurs because of the movie, so some of them hesitantly offered to be storm chasing tour guides, both to make some cash, and to help keep amateurs safe and out of the way of the professionals, and it was a roaring success. But actual storm chasers have been at this for like 70 years, it just wasn't mainstream knowledge.

"It's so far" -- when talking about the storm shelter at the start of the movie. I used to live in Arkansas, part of Dixie Alley and in the past included in Tornado Alley, and had friends in Oklahoma. You do not want a storm shelter under your house or near it or near any large structure that if destroyed will likely dump what can be massive amounts of debris, maybe an entire roof or wall or house, on top trapping you inside. The idea is to not wait until the last moment to go to your shelter. Once there are severe storm warning and or a tornado watch (meaning conditions exist that could spawn a tornado, you get in it then. You don't wait for a tornado warning (meaning a tornado has been verified to be on the ground) and if close have to attempt to outrun it and all the debris it's throwing to only then attempt to reach your safest place to ride out a tornado.

The only part of the film which is incorrect is the talk about the Fujita Scale. You cannot LOOK at the tornado and know what it's rating is. You determine the rating by looking at the damage left behind. Like the next day or whenever the folks paid to do damage assessments. I've been chasing since high school in the mid 60's. I have seen my share as have my sons. As they became old enough they would go with dad to watch. You guys were really into it. Great film. I always enjoy seeing reactions to it. Twister is such a great movie. The FX might be a little outdated by today's standards but it has such a great story, wonder characters and some good fun moments also. The characters brings some wonderful humour to the movie but not over the top or dumb and the choice of actors is spot on. Helen hunt is a stunning woman and a wonderful actress. I also have a love for tornadoes myself, one I've had since I was a child. I used to dream of them and now and again, still do. I've always wanted to go storm chasing. Of course, ut would be rather frightening at times but also an amazing experience. If you can face one of those then you can do anything or at least, face anything that life throws at you. Great video ladies. Have a fantastic day, take care!

True story: While in the theater watching this movie, it was suddenly stopped and the lights went on and we were asked to seek shelter. The movie watchers thought it was a joke giving the movie, but as the first giggles and gufaws started to escape their owners lips the REAL tornado sirens started to blare across the city. Luckly it was just a powerful downburst that took out half a new housing area, so no one was seriously injured. Enjoying your content!

Love is being crazy... but on the same page. I like how you saw how Jo villainized Mother Nature because of her history, but while in reality tornadoes are not random they form because of the right combination of terrain and conditions.

OMFG. I looooove this movie. Yeah the science and all that is wonky and inaccurate. But the camaraderie and likability with each character is so true. One of my childhood friends went to college in meteorology and does storm chasing during twister season. It truly is a fun thrill like in the movie. AND they’re making a sequel called Twisters with Glen Powell. CAN’T wait for that one 😀

Amazing!!! The characters were GREAT! The new "Twisters" movie coming July 2024 is nothing without the original cast. Bill Paxton died and Philip Seymour Hoffman died as well. Helen Hunt wanted to do a sequel but the studio said no. Shame. This movie is incredible!

When Melissa heard bill say what he said over the radio. She didn't think she was a filler. What she realized as a therapist was that Joe was traumatized by the loss of her father and got a bit obsessive, which drove a wedge between her and a guy who was perfect for her, and who truly loves her. As well as knowing from this couple of days experience what his true passion really is and that she is kind of pulling him away from what his passion is. While simultaneously realizing that she doesn't really love him for who he is, just the facade, he has put up to get away after falling away from Joe.

The first movie I saw with the Fiance' Melissa, was called "Crossroads" (1986), with Ralph Machio, (The Karate Kid). Another really awesome movie too. Her character was like polar opposite from her role here in Twister.I think she was about 16 or 17 at that time. You guys should really consider reacting to that one as well.

So I lived in Kansas from age 3 to 11 and while I thankfully never got close to a tornado I did experience storms that did almost as much damage. And yet I still love this movie. It truly captures the horror and the thrill of storm chasing. And nowadays some chasers actually build their own ARMORED VEHICLES to not just chase storms but to get purposely in their way, drop down some anchors, and have tornadoes run over them while pointing cameras and other meteorological equipment up the funnel. There was a show on Discovery channel over 10 years ago called Storm Chasers where 2 groups of chasers with their own armored vehicles did just that. One with an IMAX camera. Also I can tell that these gorgeous and clever ladies have never been within 100 miles of a tornado or even a damaging Midwest storm. Take it from me, Bill Paxton’s instincts were right for a reason, and that reason is you have to respect the power and unpredictable nature of tornadoes. You think they’re going one way and then without warning they turn on a time and can wind up right on top of you in mere seconds.

15:58 You definitely have a life while chasing. You only spend 2-4 days out per setup, and setups basically end between October and March, with about 5-20 strong setups per year. Also, most chasers don’t chase in “the woods” (East of the Mississippi River), so they only go out for the first couple of days on each round of weather. The only people brave/crazy enough to chase in the woods have tech that also allow for night chasing, and they aren’t bothered with getting super close (good filming range), since it’s all about the data from the Dopplers. Filmers chasing in the woods are psychotic (sorry, Sean Casey, but I’m calling you out on this).
