It still surprises me how Brits think eating reindeer is weird. It's a deer. People eat deer all around the world. Just because there's a christmas fairytale about flying reindeer and an old dude shouln't make eating reindeer weird.

Well said. It's just a semi-domesticated mountain deer. And many foreigners think that we eat reindeer all the time, but in reality it really isn't every day dish because it's so expensive compared on eg. pork and beef. For example I don't even remember when I ate reindeer last time. Maybe last autumn.

@@villekaapro8011 Yeah, me too. Usually I buy a big chunk, cut it in smaller portions and put the rest in the freezer. The meat is so lean, you can store it for almost two years in the freezer. Not that it would last that long though.

@@mikkorenvall428 Rice porridge is indeed a recent addition. Much easier (cheaper?) to procure and have that smooth, filling sensation. And a bit of natural sweetness! Regional porridge mixes vary a lot. My personal favorite is a mix of Rice Porridge with Crushed Potato and a bit of Barley Porridge added to finish the texture.

Egg butter, smoked salmon and marinated red onion is my favorite combination. Even though I like adding cheese on many foods, I don't think that combo would gain anything by adding cheese. (Otherwise, cheese is a good topping for karelian pies.)

Stuffed or "rolled" cabbage, kaalikääryleet is a traditional dish eaten for decades. The younger generation doesn't enjoy them so often but when done properly, really good. Usually contains minced meat also in the stuffing, but variations are plentiful. Usually also sweetened with a bit of dark syrup. I've only learned to enjoy them and also cabbage casserole "kaalilaatikko" after going 30+ , not so much when I was younger

It is or at least was still a quite frequent school food at least 20 years ago. And the school version was not the greatest of taste or smell, I think that is one of the key reason why younger people or even millenials like me are off put by it if their only experience is school lunch version. Later on as an adult I've grown to like stuffed cabage with cream sauce, if well prepared.

People can have their opinions about the overall comparative merits of Hesburger vs McDonalds. But I hope every reasonable person can agree that Hesburger's sauces are way better. 😀
@Velgar_Grim
@Velgar_Grim 25 күн бұрын
I usually tell people that difference between Hese, McD and B-King is the amount of mayo. Hesburger has the most and their game on that front is absolutely amazing. The mentioned sauce. But if you're not that into mayo, McDonalds is great, much more sour than the almost creamy Hese. And if you don't like mayo, Burger King. Mostly just BBQ sauce everywhere with little to no mayo. But still tasty. Not to mention all of the above are perfectly safe options in Finland, anywhere in any city or rural areas that have them. No spitting, shitty hands or anything in any reportable quantities.
@r2dezki

I also prefer Hesburger over McDonald's. Every time I go to McD's I get soggy fries, whereas Hesburger's fries are always crispy. It's strange, it used to be completely backwards.

As a Finnish person I don't get the idea of reindeer stew and salmon as being typical Finnish foods. Reindeer is only produced in Lapland by mostly Sami people, and it's way more expensive than beef if you buy it from the grocery store. Nearly all of the salmon consumed is mass produced in Norway, and the only reason it's popular is because it's cheaper than local fish.

Not sure if they are particularly Finnish, but cabbage rolls is a common dish. Usually the filling is minced meat and rice. They are usually flavored with some syrup, so they are slightly sweet. Karelian pies are traditionally eaten with egg butter, but you can eat them with any topping of your choice. When you cook them in a proper oven and eat them when they are still warm, they are actually rather delicious, and can be served in any occasion: "Karelian Pie, Karjalanpiirakka, a deliciously rich and savory dish". And if you replace the rise porridge with potato mush and make the pie a round shape, you get another commonly eaten pie: a potato pie. That one you can eat E.g. with butter and slice of cheese. The graduation parties are on their way, which means sandwich cakes: "Finnish Sandwich Cake | Voileipäkakku". Those reindeer fly everywhere like flies, so it's easy to drop one on your yard and throw into a grill. Here's one delicious fish dish: "Loimulohi: Finnish smoked planked salmon/trout (Blazed Salmon)". Fish dishes are common: "Finnish fish delicacies on an open fire". There are different kind of rye breads: "Quest for Sourdough Finland - the tradition of rye breads".

A Finn here. Coffee as coffee. No milk or sugar or any of that crap. I once went to Liverpool for New Year's and on the first morning of the year I ordered a cortado as a double from a coffee car. The barista had to ask me what I meant so I repeated that I want it double, like with more coffee. He then pointed out to me it would be 4 shots of espresso so I replied "yes, that, thank you". A woman taking an order before me asked if I was tired, it was the morning after parties after all, but I just told her "no, just Finnish".

The inside of a "Carelian pie" IS rice porridge. Congee is much more liquidy. And yes, you can have one any time of the day, often with coffee. Girl, put some butter on that rye bread! ( not the shrimp-salmon combo but plain rye bread and then toppings, if desired, that way it isn't dry.) In my family "Carelian stew" was served with peeled boiled potatoes but I can forgive a foreigner who doesn't know any better... My dad's stew included beef, pork, lamb and veal and beef liver and kidneys and carrots and rutabaga. Delicious!

Karelian pie (mashed potatoes inside instead of ricepudding) and the crust made of rye flower must be warm and a good amount of salty egg-butter on top is how my late father from Karelia taught us kids to have them. And karelian stew is served from christenings to weddings to funerals in my family. And the stew is made of onions, carrots, beef and fatty pork cooked with low temperature (150 C) in the oven at least 4 hours so that the grease from the pork melts in your mouth. Before cooking add some bay leafs, whole black peppers and sea salt and the feast can begin. And don't forget the delicious mushroom salad as a side dish + mashed potatoes of course. Greetings from 🇫🇮.

There are more reindeer than people in Finnish Lapland. So it is not at all strange that Finns eat reindeer. Santa Claus has his own reindeer and doesn't eat them, but there are so many reindeer living free in the nature of Lapland that eating them is not at all strange. And this is not only limited to Finland, but reindeer is eaten equally in Norway, Sweden and Russia, that is, at least in those areas where reindeer live. However, at least in Finland, it's not about any cheap meat, but even the cheapest ones are talking briskly about prices above 20€/kg (1kg= approx. 2.3lb), then you can easily pay 60-70€/kg for the best pieces

👩🏼‍🌾👋🏼😊 Hello, Dwayne! Thanks for another great reaction video! It's a pity that these two nice Canadians are being presented with what looks like just mushy foods, which don't even resemble the original dishes. Here's a few comments: -- Lingonberries are just called lingon in Swedish and puolukka in Finnish. The forest floors are covered by them starting in late summer until the frost hits. They are intensely red and very tart, but can be eaten raw. Usually, they accompany dark meat and venison dishes. Lingonberries can be crushed with sugar to obtain a fresh sweet and sour mush. Usually they're boiled with sugar to make an ordinary sweet jam. They may be made into a pudding, like a bavarois, for instance. People gather buckets of them and put them in the freezer to be used in wintertime. -- The vorschmack is not a very common dish, and, frankly, I personally don't like it. A bland paste with some pickled gherkins... -- Reindeer meat is not commonly eaten in southern Finland. Only in restaurants catering to tourists. I've never eaten reindeer meat. Oh, yes, I have! The shreaded type with mashed potatoes. Very uninteresting and bland. -- The Carelian stew (homemade by dear old mum) is very tasty, by contrast. It is composed of goodsize chunks of beat, porc and lamb. All seered in a frying pan to get a nice colour, them placed in a casserol with onion, salt, pepper, whole black peppercorns and chunks of carrots, maybe leeks etc., but the meats should remain the main focus. Baked in the oven until the meats are really tender but still keep their shape. Usually served with boiled or fried potatoes. Very flavourful and juicy! Nothing you'll ever get in a restaurant. The young generation have lost most of the knowledge of making everyday, long-baking traditional Finnish dishes, which is too sad. -- In Finland, we still follow the seasonal food tradition, although not at all as much as previous generations did. Today, it's all pizza, kebabs, tacos, fast foods - and more pizza. By the way, Finnish beef is top quality and usually very tender. I'm guessing that that's because it's allowed to hang long enough to tenderise it correctly before putting it on the market. -- In the mid-sixties, when lived in Paris, I was very surprised and disappointed by the toughness of the meat used in châteaubriands and tournedos. Not in restaurants (couldn't) afford to go to restaurants), but at the dinners of the well-to-do family that I lived with. If you didn't cut up your meat un tiny pieces that you would be able to swallow whole, you would end up chewing on.your meat 'till the cows came home'. No so, in Finland, unless you ended up somewhere in the godforsaken wilderness - or the only available eating place in some remote village. We do like fish, though. Many people like to fish themselves. After salmon and rainbow trout, white fish like pike, perch-pike and flounder are very popular, as are crayfish, which used to be very abondant until a crayfish pest decimated them severely. Now, most of the crayfish sold is of am imported type. Their claws are not as meatly as those of the original Finnish ones. And then there's the case of the herring and the Baltic herring, very popular in all of the Nordic countries. Fried, smoked or pickled in so many ways, with all kinds of sauces, they go so well with boiled or fried potatoes, with hardboiled eggs on many types of Finnish dark ryebread fresh from the oven, or warmed up in a toaster for a moment. -- The ämmi (memma in Swedish) is strictly an Easter dish, like the Russian pasha, another very rich dish eaten around Easter in the Orthodox countries. It is a sweet pudding (dessert), which should be eaten with a sprinkling of sugar on top and surrounded by heavy cream or milk. It's so filling that just a small portion will be enough. -- Carelian pies have a very thin rye crust, a filing of rice or potato mush and should definitely be eaten with a lot of a salted mix of chopped hard-boiled egg and butter. Slightly warm it tastes better. Personally, I rarely eat Carelian pies. Yhey do not go with coffee, in my opinion. But they would go with salmon soup (too much hyped). We used to have a lot more soups in our daily diet, and every soup was accompanied by an open-faced sandwich, usually with toppings, and which is just perfect as accompaniment to the soup in question. To just have a soup is a little too meager as a meal, I think.

Eating Karelian pie without egg butter is against the law in Finland and you will go to jail for life. Also you have not eaten rye bread in England. (80% wheat) Tell me after you visit Finland if it was the same. 😉

True. My friend from the US once told me "oh we've got rye bread too, I love it!"... I had to tell him "no, no you do not have rye bread". It definitely is not the same. At all.

Long list below: #1 Reindeer Mash: It's perfect. I prefer noticeably more buttery/fatty version (has a bit more of the "sauce"). And if you're using Lingonberries, you should have them as is or just-barely sweetened jam. Too much sugar and the you'd might as well eat strawberry jam! #2 Vorschmack: Almost never even heard about it. Must be either very fancy or regional thing. Doesn't sound like something I'd eat. Looks rather dry, which is another no-go of mine. #3 Stuffed Cabbage/Cabbage Rolls: Very common food. Maybe not technically most native food but then again lots of Eastern European stuff is very similar to each other. Selection of meat and other stuffing varies a lot. I like mutton-based filling myself. Has to be pretty firm but juicy. "The thing" they're having looks like a Cow Pile to me.. Not appetizing tbh. Curious about clearly pretty mushroom-y filling tho! #4 Karelian Pie: Savory pasty treat or "flat bread"-kin. Thin Rye Crust with VERY regional filling: Some sort of Mix from either of barley, potato (and other veggies!), millet and boiled rice - all of these in thick, porridge-like state. Should be enjoyed warm with thick salty butter or better, Egg Butter. Tends to become "Meh" when dried up in lukewarm environment. And if not done by hand, the filling loses the little flavour it should have had. Properly done and with egg-butter.. Heavenly! Very strict on how and from what it's made and the size of it! Not all pasties are Karelian pasties! #5: Salmon Bread: Any Rye Bread and Cold-Smoked Salmon. What else you'd need? Maybe that pinch of Dill? A spray of citrus/lemon? A slight swipe of butter or plain cream-cheese? Personally feel shrimp-mayo and Roe are step too far. I'd rather have them on their own slices of bread! #6 Salmon (meat): It's salmon. Can't really go wrong. If "fried", my personal favorite is blazing it over open fire. Add salt. Enjoy. Oven-fried is good but depends SO MUCH on the fish itself. Way too often you get "fishy" salmon which is bad. Salmon shouldn't taste too "fishy". #7 Karelian Stew: Often regarded as one of the most traditional "feast foods" for some reason? Nothing about it is especially celebratory! Very common food overall cause it's easy to make and again: you can't really go wrong with it. Simple Slow-cooked meat (game or beef). I prefer adding big slices of onions and/or whole pickled/pearl onions with a bit of mixed root veggies? Add handful of whole mixed peppers. Salt to taste, can be quite salty! Serve with boiled/mashed potatoes and fresh "summer coleslaw of your choice" and/or picked cucumbers and/or red beet.

Karelian pie is made in rye bread, with rise inside. Before rice was introduced potato was used. Its delli good with butter. None of these foods here are " posh ", these are common man food, simple and doing its job just like the people.

It's a common everyday food. Nothing to do with Christmas or any other festival. Never understood why in the hell are some people/regions regarding it as some sort of fancy, special, celebratory food - same with Liver Casserole. They are NOT "Xmas foods". If I'd want microwave food, I'd ask for it...

@@krompus8180 Only the part about "meat not always being available" was somewhat right in that sentence. Timeframe is completely off, tho. Time it takes isn't that much longer than prepping and cooking for a bit larger dinner or for larger amount of people. And if you put it in the oven when you get home from the work, it's done after you've done the most immediate housework and have relaxed a bit..
