The reservoirs look like that because they were formed by damming a river and thereby drowning its valley. If you look at the reservoirs in Wales, which were also formed by drowning valleys, many of them have a similar look.

1) At 3:00, there's a good reason why the sparsely populated island of Ni'ihau gets few visitors. Known as "the Forbidden Isle," it is off-limits to all outsiders except the descendants of the white woman who bought it in 1864, U.S. Navy personnel, government officials, and invited guests. Most of the 84 residents are Native Hawai'ian and speak Hawai'ian as their primary language. 2) At 10:26, the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was mentioned. An area of 27,000 square miles (70,000 square km) was covered in flood waters up to 30 feet (9 meters) deep. Hundreds of thousands of people, predominantly African-Americans, were made homeless and moved to the cities of the North as part of the "Great Migration." The Army Corps of Engineers has worked for decades since then building levees and other flood protection measures to prevent such a severe flood from happening again, we hope. 3) The town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, was originally named Hot Springs, because of the nearby hot springs. It sounds too absurd to be true, but in 1950 the town changed its name to that of the radio trivia game show "Truth or Consequences." It was a publicity stunt for the show, which promised to broadcast its 10th anniversary special from a town that changed its name to that of the show. 4) At 14:40, the "Finger Lakes" were carved during the last Ice Age. The ice came from and retreated to the north, which is why the lakes run north-to-south. 5) At 25:35, Nevada's was the first saline lake.

I'm from the U.S. (Chicago, to be exact) and I'm familiar with a lot of the lakes on this list. The lakes that you say look like rivers actually ARE sections of rivers that have been dammed off to flood a portion of the river to form a lake, but they are always still connected to the river by it's dams, so I share your sentiment about them not being true lakes. I would have preferred it if this list included only natural lakes and not manmade ones.

The eastern edge of Lake Michigan which forms Michigan's west coast has some of the best beaches, anywhere. The sand is like finely ground sugar except for the taste, I suppose. :D Up and down the coast there are also several places where there are sand dunes that are really fun to play on. In my early 20s, I was a camp counselor. I would take kids over to the Lake Michigan shore. We would cook our dinner over a fire, goof around on some sand dunes, watch the awesome sunset over the lake and then sleep over night on the beach under the stars. Those were some great times.

So, he found the name of the Massachusetts lake amusing? Maybe he wouldn't be so amused if he actually pronounced it correctly. Quabbin rhymes with "robin" and is a word from the native Nipmuc language that means "meeting place of many waters". Now if he wanted the oddest names of lakes in each US state, Massachusetts would be at the top of the list with Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. It's the longest name of any geographic location or formation in the US. It has several other spellings but all trace back to the Nipmuc language. There are several translations but many allude to "neutral fishing place". That led to the not-so- authentic translation " you fish on your side of the lake, we fish on our side and nobody fishes in the middle". It is also called Lake Webster... much easier to pronounce.

@@patriciafeehan7732 The point is that in UK and US usage differ in how much artificial plant curation is needed to call an area a "garden". In the UK merely having grass you mow is sufficient for the term, thus the *ENTIRE* back yard is the "back garden" because it's not being left to grow wild. In US usage, merely having mowed grass isn't sufficient, it needs to be something a bit more involved than that. So in UK usage, the entire yard, including the plain grass lawn as well as the fringe of azaleas would be your "garden", but in US usage, only the bit with the azaleas would be "garden" and the grass lawn it surrounds wouldn't be.

Wisconsin is slightly larger than England and we have over 15,000 lakes, there are a bunch of huge lakes. Lake Winnebago has the biggest area but it's more of a shallow lake. Some of our lakes are small but in most places they would be considered a good sized lake. I believe we have ponds that are larger than some state's lakes. We also border Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and the Mississippi giving Wisconsin more coast land than California and yes we do have surfing on Lake Michigan.

Number 18 Maine - Moosehead Lake will surprise you by the sound of it. You had paused and mentioned the islands in the lake and how the lake is in a rural area the island, therefore, probably is rarely traveled. Well, as it turns out, Moosehead Lake is a popular place for summer only residents from out of state and some other visitors to vacation. It is rural in that area but in summer there's definitely more people. And one of the islands (I think one of the ones you hovered over if my memory serves) is Mt. Kineo. You can go over to the island and hike Mt. Kineo (a state park) and then if you so fancy you can go to the golf course also on the island. There's shuttle boats over so you can get to the island to hike or golf. I've kayaked over and hiked Mt. Kineo. I did not take part in the golf though - not my sport - and more so not my forte. So in the summer season you are unlikely to be alone on the island. In the off season though when all the vacationers from out of state leave, well, that a different story.

I know that the largest lake in England is The Windermere. I've actually been there and took a short afternoon cruise to view the surrounding scenery from the lake. It's just shy of 6 sq miles.

The salt in a saline lake comes from the sodium (in crystal form) that naturally occurs in the bedrock (ground) under and around the lake.

I grew up in New Hampshire and when I was a kid I had a friend whos family had two cabins on Lake Winnipesaukee, and we spent some time there. It was just beautiful!

16:30 i was up at moosehead lake last september on a fishing trip so we took a boat out there and we were only in the southernmost tip of it yet it felt like we were SO far from any land it was actually crazy. and we weren’t even in one of the more empty areas of the lake. some of those islands in the lake have little shacks or off-grid homes. i don’t think anyone lives in them full time but rather go out for a weekend or something but im not even entirely sure. He mentioned in the video how greenville is really the only “built up” town along the lakes shoreline and that is where we were staying. only about 1000 residents living there to give you an idea of how rural the area is
