Co-operativism would basically be a disaster as it would make British equity markets effectively redundant. Much of new capital generation relies on financial investors from banks to ordinary consumers. These people wouldn’t be able to trade equity in a completely co-operative system as there would be none to trade and issue as only workers would hold the shares. So although this would mean workers would receive greater dividends off of the shares giving them higher pay, it would also mean that raising funds for the company (especially for any new, smaller business) would be virtually impossible. This would massively slow down innovation for only a very marginal benefit to workers.

For me, the Co-Op end of the Labour party would be more appealing (I speak as a Classical Liberal, swing voter, who spoiled my last national election ballot). I like that it still focuses on the individual, but how individuals can come together and co-operate. That's admirable, and feels quite centrist, appealing to the benefits of the individual and community. Too many left leaning ideologies, from Communism, Progressivism and Socialism, sacrifice the individual too much at the expense of the collective, for example with "positive discrimination"/quotas that make it difficult for me to support. I've honestly never heard of this party, but I hope they continue to do well and get more attention. Thanks for sharing!

To confirm from a co-op member then, is the goal to make every business a co-op? If so then why can't you make such a structure be a popular one through free market results? My current impression of the party is state mandated private business structures.

@Tim Jones well, it's not so black and white. whilst many private firms do often outperform coops, it's important to note that we're looking at successful private firms. effectively only 40% of private businesses are successful, compared to 80% of cooperatives. furthermore, coops tend to fair better during recessions. this is even more so the case with credit unions (the cooperative versions of banks) doing better than regular banks due to having more automatic stabilisers (in the macroeconomic sense)

What the hell is a "Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer" That sounds like something from a fantasy book.
@TheRambunctious

The UK has two major parties, labour and conservative, when one in is power they form a cabinet, made up of chancellor of the exchequer, home secretary, foreign secretary etc. The party not in power, the opposition party, also forms a cabinet, a shadow cabinet. They have no power, it is kind of like that party saying "if we get into power, this is what our cabinet would look like". For example, the shadow chancellor draws up labours economic plans and criticises the tory ones, despite having no actual influence on which becomes law, unless their party is elected at the next election. Not sure if the USA political parties have a similar system. Oh, and chancellor of the exchequer is like "secretary of the treasury" in the USA I believe

@@Bushflare they struggle to find Investors because they are more focused on benefiting the workers than the shareholders. So even when they are just as profitable, they get less development. They also tend to lack infrastructure, banks and lawyers know less about coops so it's harder for them to work with coops. I think a small subsidy and enough public exposure could allow coops to be a major sector as influential as the private or public sector. I think the main problem is just public exposure though.

@Bushflare
@Bushflare 3 жыл бұрын
@@koalasquare2145 Why would anybody complain that Co-Ops struggle to find investors? Of course they do, they're fundamentally opposed to the shareholder model. Shareholder model is just top-down version of the Co-Op model, they cannot coexist. That's not something legislation will fix, that's just how Co-Ops naturally work. And subsidising Co-Ops is just poor legislative principle. I'm all for encouraging new businesses regardless of their structure but it shouldn't be the duty of the people to fund these start-ups. If the Co-Op party has been around for 100 years now then surely the lack of public awareness and infrastructure's gotta be laid at least a bit on their shoulders, right? Why not construct a list of banks/building societies who are able to work with Co-Ops and form that infrastructure naturally over time? It just strikes me that Co-Ops are less being disadvantaged by the government and more that they're being disadvantaged by the quality of their advocates/community.
