This is, in my opinion, Britain’s best public train. With a full service Pullman restaurant, a first class carriage, classic HST diesel haulage and a trip into England’s riviera county, Cornwall, this is the real deal. This one’s called the Royal Duchy after the Duchy of Cornwall (the Duke himself is Prince Charles).
The only thing that could make this trip better was the weather! We start at Paddington and wend our way down the Great Western Main Line, past Exeter, the Dawlish sea wall, and Plymouth, and crossing the most iconic railway bridge in England - Brunel’s magnificent Royal Albert Bridge.
My journey took me to Newquay so I alighted here at Par for the branch line to take me there. The cost of the ticket? £38.00 in first class. The meal in the Pullman car? Well that was more than the ticket! Well worth it though and I STRONGLY recommend you take this train or another of GWR’s Pullmans (all the Pullman trains are here: www.gwr.com/pl...) if you can manage it.
Enjoy the report.
Oh, here’s the Realtimetrains link (it’s free to use and totally awesome): www.realtimetra...
PS: as a couple of you have pointed out, that's not the Dart river, but the Plym. My mistake!
Do you have any ideas for future trip reports? Something you've never seen on KZbin before? Why not suggest it to me in the comments? I read every single one! 👍🏻

Had my first ever on train dinner on this route in the 70s. Back then, waiting staff were ex RN stewards, used to serving soup from a tureen while the ships, then trains, rocked around like mad and never a drop spilt. Has always been brilliant. Peter Cook the comedian would always go to the galley to help out on his way home to Somerset. This video will be a great marker as the new trains come on stream. Sad the on board cafes are going though. Can’t stand the trolley service as they’re awful and just obstruct the aisles constantly. No more bacon baguettes in the morning 🙁

Was a great trip. Compartment train, vicar to chat to, amazing dinner as he recounted sailing across the US in a yacht. The curate of St Martin’s in the fields. And yes. Food way better than I see on here in first class on airlines. I reckon a meal like that for £50 way better value than huge hike on airlines fares for pretty mediocre offerings. Done that too 😉

I haven't been to Paddington since the early 90s, and I hardly recognise it - it's so clean! Back then the train shed roof was so blackened from diesel fumes (maybe even steam soot...) that there was almost no natural light coming through. It was so gloomy. It's been transformed now. Nice to see these wonderful old stations finally given the care that they deserve.

I've used this service a couple of times, and what really impressed me most was the staff - they were absolutely top-notch, friendly, efficient and helpful. That kind of esprit de corps in a team is hard to define and maintain but easy to recognise and - for the lucky customer - wonderful to experience.

@@pygmygiant Save your pennies, take the bus instead. Why? 1. Amtrak runs some weird 1:00am or 2:00am schedules. The train stops are not safe, you WILL get mugged! 2. The Conductors and staff are rude and entitled. 3. They refuse most heavy baggage. 4. No diner cars and if you are unlucky enough to have one, the food is airline crap. Most trains reduced to snack cars. 5. And worst of all, they are late, often by three to four hours and there is no guarentee that you'll get to your destination. 6. No wiifii or plug ins and no movies. Congrats! That is the crappy train service purchased with your taxpayer dollars. Better to handit off to the States or dissolve it entirely!!

Southern American from Greensboro, North Carolina here. I have really enjoyed your videos. Due to health reasons, I'm no longer able to travel. So every Sunday I accompany you on one of your trips. You share a lot of information on the history, the scenery, the itinerary, and geography of the trip without getting bogged down in minute details. As for this trip, I feel that the overall price of everything was fair. You're basically paying for the experience, which in my opinion was awesome. Please keep posting your wonderful videos, so I, and others like myself, can keep traveling:) Thank you!!!

I've spent two lovely weeks in Newquay. We were a US Navy flight crew temporarily detached to RAF St Mawgan. We took side trips to Plymouth, Penzance, St. Ives, Padstow, Tintagel (Yea, Arthur! King of the Britons!) and some other little towns that were charming and quaint. There was one evening in Padstow that we found ourselves in right in the middle of a festival. You folks help me out here (I'm a Yank, so there's a cultural divide), the townsfolk were split into the Blues and the Reds, and the motto was "Oss Oss Wee Oss!" It was quite a spectacle. All in all, I'm not sure who had more enjoyment - us, or the locals watching us soak up the customs (Cream Tea, Lawn Bowling, "chips" with everything, including pizza, some of the best beers I've ever had, including McCaffrey's '3 minute' Ale). Good times, to be sure.

In comparison to a rather annoying young American I've seen, he is neither pushy nor brash, perhaps this is peculiarly British and it doesn't appeal to those who prefer that style. It is also about travel not just airline travel. These videos require you sit back and watch attentively. They are not, as some are, poorly disguised adverts promoting something or other. In the mad world of KZbin, this is a pleasant backwater through which I am presently pootling along at a gentle pace. Mind you, being retired helps me have an excuse to pootle.

Some of the finest food we have ever experienced has been on this excellent service. I remember having trout served up on the same route in the dining car from Paddington to Penzance in the 1980s....amazing experience. When the staff serve you up the food whilst the train is moving it's surreal. 100% recommend the Pullman service too. A great railway experience, particularly when the train leaves Exeter to Plymouth gliding along the coastline down to Dawlish. Just one minor point Paul, and don't take it personally, Coca Cola is not a good thing to drink with fillet steak! A lovely glass of that Malbec would have complemented the meal perfectly! Thanks for this, my 3 loves, nice trains, good grub , and the West Country. from far away Australia, I now feel hungry and very jealous and hugely nostalgic for all the wonderful times I have spent at the end of this line over my life.

I travelled the opposite route, Edinburgh to London in 1979. It was an overnight trip. So looked forward to a cozy sleep in my berth, but a horrid gas bubble kept me awake all night.

I also recommend the Welsh Government sponsored Cardiff to Holyhead - food is free and was on par with the Pullman quality wise IMO

Thank you Paul - very nice. Because of this video I will make a point to someday return to Paddington Station, and buy a First Class fare to anywhere, just so I can walk in that lounge. I am the kind of person who is impressed by walking in the same footsteps as people like Queen Victoria and I appreciate you pointing out this important historical fact. And yes, the menu looked too expensive but for the ambiance, service, and nostalgia I suspect it it worth the cost, especially compared to some schlok at a fast food chain here. I'll pay almost anything just to not have to hear the same tired-ass phrases we get in the cookie-cutter chain restaurants here in the US. One point of minor disagreement on the "freebies:" I teach my children there is no such thing as "free." Somebody worked to create wealth to purchase those items so I teach them the items are included in the price paid for the ticket. They are "included" but far from "free." Thank you again and I encourage you to keep producing this good work.

Don L I am not trying to be rude because I fully understand your point, but my dad is a driver for the GWR so I get a free travel pass. That means that if the train manager allowed my family to sit in first class the freebies would be truly free. It doesn't happen often though, usually when we are going somewhere as a family. I mainly use it to get to school!

Nice train trip report with beautiful scenery throughout London - Par. Can't wait for another trip reoport using train again, especially using High-Speed Train in Europe, because your latest video about High-Speed Train in Europe is using PKP EIP Warsaw-Krakow.

I will geting always tears in my eye's when i watching anything from the UK ,then i was living their over 20 years and i have been . paying my Taxes and been in Employment all this years . My partner and i was living and Working so that we can pay up our House in Kingston upon Thames, he died in 2012. This year i was told i would not get a residence permit to stay in the UK after almost 30 years living in the UK. I was so sade and i put in a Contradiction ,but still it got a NO again. Then a verry good friend of my said to me go the whole way and applye for citizenship and it took quite sometimes, but in the end was worst it and i could keep my German national as well. This should not be longer availabel after next year i am so pleased to be a part of a great nation.

I do like the Brunel bits. Here in USA bridges are built as cheaply as possible (profits ) :) I recall the first newspaper I saw - read "sunny spells" while we would write "partly cloudy" - when we met my friends , our the local kids wanted them to keep talking :)

Thanks for another great train video. Yes, most pullman s are great e.g. The Yorkshire Pukkman ( Kings Cross-York), The Flying Scotsman (alas, not been a Pullman for decades), etc.

Sadly there are no public Pullman trains any more in Britain except the ones on the Great Western. Even the Yorkshire Pullman "died" in 2004. :-(

I find it strange how on intercity GWR they stop at loads of stations in southern Cornwall but after Truro they only stop at a few in Cornwall and Devon and after Devon all you've got is reading and then you're done

Love these videos! I also happen to think that the class 43 HST is the best train ever built, I have travelled on them scores of times over the 40+ years and just to think that a train that came into service when I was a teenager is still a mainstay of GWR and other operators schedules now I have turned 60 is fantastic.

..my goodness gracious, Paul...what an uber-deluxe pullman service on GRW...but you certainly pay...and pay...and pay.... Here in the states, if you ride sleeper car roomette or deluxe rooms, your meals and beverages are all inclusive...though, granted, nothing to this Michelin-star worthy fare....am sure you felt like visiting royalty on this trip.... ....as my late-best pal, Andrew Hunt from Bedford and a Sr. Long-Haul Attendant for British Airways. would say..."...the ride and the service were truly lovely....absolutely lovely...."
