It's not that long ago these were protesting over there army pensions in London. my son in laws father worked with them when he died, and he left them all his money .some vultures in the family weren't happy my son in law thought it was brill .He still had some of his weapons under his bed, which the family had to hand in .

My father was with the ghurkas all his working army life. He was born in 1900 and joined the army here when he was about 14 (went to an army school and then to Sandhurst.) Soon as he was trained he went back to India (was Irish- scottish British born in India) and spent over 20 years with the Ghurkas. He never really settled back in England. I have known about the Ghurkas all my life and have my father's memorabilia, including a kukri.! I am nearly 80 now so memories go back to the very old days of the British in India! In my father's days the Ghurkas were not considered to be mercenaries but an honoured, important part of the British Army. Thank you for having a post about them.. The Ghurka Society over here has helped me..... and my father although British had learned the toughness of the Nepalese Ghurkas. As an old man he was so independent, honourable and fit and lived like a Ghurka!! Thank you Shady. My Dad would be pleased the ghurkas are living here, (if they want to do so) - they were and are so loyal to whom they give their service.

Just over 10 years ago after a time at the MoD headquarters, I spent sometime with the Gurkhas in Cheriton (Folkstone), UK for 2 weeks. They were incredible and the stories were fantastic.

I...(And every veteran) Of the British armed forces have the utmost respect for our Gurkha brothers, sadly, our governments don't hold them in the same regard, I witnessed the met police abusing 3 Gurkha veterans who were on a peaceful hunger strike, the police were trying to confiscate camping chairs and blankets from the 3 elderly Gurkha veterans, myself and several fellow veterans stepped in to try and stop the met bullies. All they wanted was equal pension s and equal treatment, our consecutive governments have treated Gurkhas (and other British armed forces veterans) with disdain and disrespect. Nice one for highlighting our Gurkha brothers and sisters Shady, nice one 👍🏻

My Dad fought in WWII and he always said the only time he felt he could sleep safely was when his unit was next to a Gurkha unit, and if the Gurkhas went on a night raid, if they came across a camp they would identify which side's camp it was by feeling the laces on the soldiers' boots - the German Army and the British army lace their boots differently - and if it was an allies camp and one of the soldiers woke up they would say "OK Tommy, I'm Gurkha" then they would disappear as silently as they had arrived. I don't know what they did if they entered a Germany camp and a German woke up, but I suspect a corpse was found the following morning. I have so much respect for these heroes.

Ghurkas policing knife crime love it 😂😂😂 And I've worked with Ghurkas, trust me. You don't want to fight with them. Those stories ain't made up. I believe a Ghurka patrol was near some Argentine soldiers in the Falklands war. A regiment surrendered to one Ghurka patrol rather than fight 12 men.

You should take a look at the British Army selection process. There's an informative video on the British Army selection programme that provides a clearer understanding. The UK is the only country permitted to select recruits from its entire population; no other country has this privilege. Families often train their children from a young age in hopes that they will pass the selection process for the British Army.I strongly suggest you take a look; it will be an eye-opening experience. You'll be amazed at what they have to achieve to be selected.

People talk about intergration. Ghurkhas and Sikhs are a perfect example of cultures who have immigrated but also intergrated while also keeping their own religion, traditions and cultures. I think most british people are happy to call them countrymen.

Ghurkhas and Sikhs are both peoples who not only aided Britain through thick and thin but also still support and contribute to society. The UK would be weaker and a lot lesser without them which unfortunately isnt shown as much as some modern fashionable social media idiots are.

I watched a YT film about a group of young men wishing to serve as Gurkhas. They were four or five of thousands who attended rigerous testing for entry to the regiment. Only a handful would be accepted, yet those boys had trained since mid childhood in the hope of being chosen.dangerous I knew a lot about Gurkhas from my father who served with them, but was still amazed by the video.

@@ShadyShaemy town has a big Gurkha community, there used to be army barracks nearby. Thank you for bringing their warrior heritage to the forefront. I’ve researched India since I became a vegetarian age 12 (now vegan) & their worship of cows. Nepal & Tibet then became of interest. Hinduism, Buddhism & Rastafarianism are of interest to me because of their attitude towards their food & animals & respectful lifestyle. I’m liking your teaching. Knowledge is Power ✊🏽 so they say.

My grandfather was waiting on a ridge line in Tunisia ww2 in the hills and he and his battalion of Gordon Highlanders for a gurkha battalion to put in a attack on the opposite hill my grandfather was lying next to his c.o when they both got a tap on there boot with 2 gurkhas telling them the job was done. They had crept through British lines killed the germans without making a sound and got back through the gap between the Americans and Highlanders my grandfather had mad respect for the gurkhas and many other commonwealth troops.

After the 1st & 2nd Sikh Wars of India, the British also invited the Sikhs into the Anglo-Indian Army. They too are wholesome & friendly but tigers on the battlefield. They had proved their worth. Their military exploits both in the Bengal Rifles & Bengal Lancers are legendary. Prior to WW2 the Bengal Lancers gave up their horses for Armoured Cars & served in the North Africa Campaign. I'm a native Briton but have the pleasure to have both Hindus & Sikhs within my neighbourhood. 🇬🇧 🇮🇳 ❤

Hi shady in 1815 the Nepalese couldn't beat the british and vice versaso the brits out of respect asked them if they would like to join the british army history was made the gurkhas have won numerous victoria crosses for bravery for one instance a gurkha with only one hand took on 200 Japanese soldier's in ww2 there's more stories on you tube about these fearless warriors i have got so much respect for these people bravest of the brave

Shady, as you can see the Gurkhas are amazing soldiers and have the everlasting respect of the British people if you are interested in finding out more I can wholeheartedly recommend a visit to the Gurkha Museum at Peninsular Barracks in Winchester. Although the museum is not large it is well worth a visit and gives a unique insight into these courageous men. The Gurkhas are a small regiment but have received more VCs than any other British regiment, their bravery and loyalty are second to none. Thank you for this video .... we love the Gurkhas.❤ Edited to say the Gurkhas are NOT mercenaries they are an esteemed regiment in the British Army and fully a part of the British Army, they do not fight for the highest bidder but are loyal to the Crown in exactly the same way as every other British soldier. They were badly treated by the establishment in the past but the British people led by Joanna Lumley fought to get them the equal treatment they deserved and I'm delighted to say that battle was (eventually) won. Apropos your comment about immigrants being ambassadors for their countries of origin may I just say that you are a fantastic ambassador for Nigeria and definitely one of the good guys. 👍

Governnents take notice and include in proper education of our English lessons, with biology, history, culture freedom of how our military fought our ww1and 2 and our wars of Afghan, Irac, falklands et al. Great bunch of blokes, was skateboarding outside one of the gates to Bisley range when I was a kid when a army land rover pulled up out jumped 5 ghurkas spent 15 minutes watching them fall off our decks, big love to them all

Those old enough to remember The Falkland Wars will know about their reputation. It was the sight of the Gurkhas charging towards them with their guns and traditional lives that put the fear of god into the Argentinian soldiers. literally a wet your pants moment. When their honour is at stake they take no prisoners . If you read about the recruitment process you will see how many apply for a relatively small number off places. It is a great honour to your family to be chosen. Never mess with a Gurkha on the battlefield.

I was brought up (from WW2) to think very highly of the Gurhas but never knew the unfairness given here. I think most people didn't know and if it had been known there would have been an outcry and things made right a lot earlier. I feel ashamed that we took so long to make things right.

My dad was 19 when he was in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War, he worked with two Muslims from Pakistan. They were torpedoed by the submarine of Captain Viktor Ohern, who, seeing the men in the water, ordered his men to fire at them as they were trying to get into the lifeboats, (against the Geneva Convention). Over half the men were killed. One of the Muslim men swam with the Koran in his mouth as shots were fired around him. Viktor Ohern suddenly ordered his men to stop firing, because it is said, 'he had a fit of conscience.'

I get sick and tired of hearing Britain slandered for it's actions by people with no knowledge and no interest in understanding. The Gurkhas were fine when conquering Nepal but as soonas they were helping Britain conquer their actions were suddenly controversial and the reason British Gurkha veterans were given less than native British was a complex web of international politics going back to their founding Britain couldn't unilaterally make changes to their employment conditions without agreements from the Nepalese government the Indian government and without risking problems with China. In the original treaty allowing Gurkhas to serve Britain the Nepalese government was understandably concerned about loosing their best and brightest permanently so insisted all recruits had to return home afterwards this meant Britain couldn't offer Gurkhas citizenship without breaking the very treaty that allowed them to exist. British Gurkhas were already far better paid than their Nepali and Indian counterparts increasing their retirement benefits would make the job of Indian and Nepali recruiters convincing the better recruits to join them even harder and force those armies to offer better terms something they couldn't afford or didn't want to do. The Nepali historian makes a valid point and he isn't wrong taking your defeated enemies best men for your own weakens them and strengthens you a sound policy what isn't mentioned is that when those men retired they returned home with a vast wealth of trianing and experience after serving as an elite part of the most dominant military on earth passing all of that on to the Nepalese military making them a small but exceptional modern military to this day. Nepal hasn't had a serious war since largely because of geography and its friendly relationship with both india and Britain and is still quite a poor nation however it's small military is more than capable of turning anyone stupid enough to invade into finely chopped hamburger just like they did to the east india company so long ago.

Shady I am picking up a distinctly lefty bias off this narrator, possibly slightly Anglophobic too. And sadly you repeat the usual misinformation regarding our Empire. It did not as a rule spread by conquest and battle but was more ad hoc security arrangements to enable trade of all kinds to flourish. The British were surprisingly often invited to build trading stations and help local rulers with security problems. The places we left we did so peacably leaving behind solid and just institutions, railways and roads and ports. In the course of three centuries there were scandals and crimes but also a great deal of remarkable cooperation which benefited those colonies.

Shady you need to do more research than just this one piece. The Gurkha soldiers were paid. They receive pensions. They could live like kings in Nepal and many do. Come look around and see how it is on the ground for them and us in reality in this country. Immigration doesn’t always work out for the best for all involved. And I’m disappointed to hear you bandy the ‘racist’ word about so readily. It’s insulting, unnecessary and completely wrong.
