Here is one story that dates back to 18th century, on how men were recruited into army or navy. A King's Shilling or 12 pence was around 6 days payment as daily earnings was around 2p. Thus to "take the King's shilling" was to agree to serve as a sailor or soldier in the Royal Navy or the British Army. The term is still used informally. Be safe
