I watched this show from a very young age when I didn't understand a word of English. And the first time I saw the word "Bucket" I read it the fancy way like she says it. And my english teacher thought I was make a reference to the show and said "Hyacinth would be proud, but please pronounce it the correct way so you don't confuse the others"

@@Renzsu It takes a little maturity to realize what makes great acting. She also played in 1971, in a series called: "Doctors in Charge" which I found recently (not many episodes) where she is a bit of a "sorceress". You have to see actors who are mediocre, at best, to appreciate talented actors and actresses. I don't think I would've appreciated her acting if she was on TV when I was a child, either.

I remember watching this on Latvian television as a kid. They kept this gag nicely, changing her last name to mean "jar" in latvian ("burka"), and having her pronounce it with an elongation all the same - Burkaah, to still have her avoid an unglamorous last name. This show fit in nicely with the Latvian ideology, my folks sure found it relatable :D

But it's even funnier when she pronounces it wrong herself in the QE2 special when the car gets stuck in the field. "You're gonna pay for this Richard Bucket, BOUQUET". But if you go to visit her be prepared to take your shoes off and whatever you do, don't brush against her walls. LOL! How about a video featuring the best bits of Onslow's "Oh, nice".

This show cracked me up, I got the humor right away and loved every second of it! My friends thought me strange but I didn't care, I was one of those weird American kids that ended up watching a number of Canadian and British TV shows back in the day.

Frasier borrowed a lot from this show. The false sense of elitism that certain characters have. They always get humbled.

Ever notice how no one has a problem saying the name "Bucket" except Hyacinth? Even the woman at the hotel doesn't flinch when she says it but Hyacinth gets completely upset about it. Also, the man who arrives to survey the house for the alarm installation is Ian Lavender who played Private Pike in Dad's Army. I just saw that he passed away this February. I think he was the last of the cast to pass away. Very sad.

I loved this show as a kid because I had an annoying teacher and her name she insisted had a French pronunciation, despite that it was an English word. So when I would see her at school, I mentally thought of her as MY ridiculous Hyacinth. I didn't know the teacher's first name, so I pretended it was Hyacinth. It was the only way I could survive having that pretentious teacher for a whole school year. Mrs. Chance.

At a job in a southern state in the US, I had a coworker who introduced herself as Thérèse. I had the hardest time getting the pronunciation right when I talked to her. It seemed odd because she seemed like a real Southern “good ol’ girl”. When another coworker referred to her as Teresa, I asked why, and she said, oh she was always Teresa before she decided on Thérèse 😂 Thérèse Bouquet maybe!
