It's WAY easier to just use Handbrake. And if you learn how to use it properly, you can create presets that will keep 99% of the video quality, using AV1 or h.265 for the video. And handbrake can, depending on your hardware, be very fast, running several streams at once.

I've been using VLCs Media/Convert/save function to recode MKVs from OBS into MP4s before a s/w guy in work told me that OBS could do it itself. - Nice to see how to actually do it inside OBS though , Thanks Brian!

I use the simple solution to rename the extension .mkv to .mp4 and it runs fine. I guess there must be some sort of difference but it loads into my video editor either way.

Recording in mkv format in OBS does have its advantage though, as the file will be recoverable should an event occur during the recording process as described by the “Warning” that pops up when changing the format from MKV to another. Guess it is up to the individual user to assess that risk.

I've learned from experience that it's worth recording in mkv to start and remuxing later. I've had OBS crash during recording an mp4 and lost all content as a result. There is an automatic remux feature in OBS, which I use all the time now. This remuxes to mp4 after recording is done.

Muxing is for audio. This method is only wrapping the file and not reencoding it.

Well called Remux so maybe take up your issue with the creator of OBS

I've been using a small and basic free piece of software called Xmedia Recode. It appears to be able to perform a remux, even though the word "remux" is not mentioned.

for converting video batch OBS is fine but for more video options like split/cut and remux at the same time Avidemux is awesome application.

MP4s i hate them, why would you want to turn MKV file to a MP4 file? Other than to be saving space, you take away the quality of the video in doing so i find in my option

its a screen cast

I do this in FFMPEG, but that's a command line tool, so not suitable for everyone.
