Tip to everybody who want to use this tutorial: DON'T CARELESSLY TRANSFER ANY C: FILES AS MOST OF IT ARE PART OF YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM!!! This is the reason why the computer stops working as the OS will get corrupted. Downloads files and some others are safe to transfer as it is not part of your system.

I think the best use for this is if you have a program that forces you to install it to C: when you don't have space, so change the registry to a drive you do have space, install the program, then immediately switch the registry back.

ALWAYS... Before changing anything in the registry, at the top of Regedit you will find the option to be able to back up your registry. Do so on a USB stick for your own peace of mind. To restore from the back up, just double click on the USB backup. It will restore your computer back to the way it was before.

Thank you for this video! I see a lot of comments saying it broke my computer...What exactly is happening? I feel they don't realize the system is looking for their programs in a different folder. So some programs will not work, depending on where they were originally installed. This is what happened to me. So I suggest you uninstall the programs and reinstall them to the drive you want. Then I saw a comment saying "Go into your settings, click on the search bar, type "default save location", and change the directory." - Easy for everyone! Also before you install a program, most of them allow you to choose where to install it.

I don't have any problems with it anymore, I guess I was just in shock at the time of writing because i ihad just newly bought my pc. I just did this to my new build of windows 11 pro to have all programs install on my second large 4tb NVMe D drive and windows is on m y 1tg NVMe C drive.. I think this will help out if I ever need to reinstall windows and things. Hopefully it runs better with windows on one drive and programs on other drive. @@-bx yes it worked great and happy I did it. Also where some programs don't move thru windows apps where there is a feature to do so theu windows after install to my D drive that I named Data. For apps that don't let you select D to move or install, I purchased AOMEI partition assistant which has an awesome feature under menu "All Tools" and select " App Mover" and it will move pretty much any app to any drive like my D drive. Works flawless. I'm sure in the future, we should be able to install any app onto any drive since many people PC users have more than one drive. Hopefully developers start to add this into their installation media soon. A lot do give that option today.

I think this would have to be done on a fresh install because once you've changed that, it would begin to dump files for specific programs on to the D:\ when its root directory is already established on the C:\ which in effect would cause crashing, bad performance and situations where windows would not be able to locate parts of programs already installed. This does seem like a decent idea but I think people should be weary of trying this unless they're absolutely sure that they know what they're doing (lol).

This kind of process to change the location of program files is only applicable after a clean format of your system. Unfortunately if you already have your programs installed before you do this it will only break the linkage of your other apps. The best way if you already have installed your application is linking them to another drive and to safely move that program to the other drive.

LinusTechTips doesn't recommend messing with your registry, it is better to change the location manually every time you install. Changing the registry like he did may cause corruption to your Windows and will make it so that you will have to re-install Windows. Trust my comment.

Thanks for the upload. I've tried this before, but still my OS (win7 pro) installs by default to the C-drive. I changed it back cause all the shortcuts got mixed up, eventhough the targets were matching. So isn't there another line in REG I need to change? Also if you want to safe space, you might want to change the default folder for USER as well. I really want to make this work cause I want to run my OS from a 150gb 10.000rpm hdd instead of ssd. That is my solution for screen tearing. Suggestions on that are welcome, but I can say already I've tried a lot on trying to solve that issue and came up with the good old HDD. Problem solved. This might work fine in fresh installs, however, if you already have some installed programs at C: program files and program file x64 folders they may break, after I changed the environment variables Outlook and Google Chrome stopped working, fortunatelly RegEdit still worked and I was able to restor the original ProgramFilesDir value to C: and that fixed the problem.

You will have two 'Programs Files' and 'Programs Files(x86)' folders, one at C:/ and one at your new location. This trick is best done after a clean install of Windows before installing your programs.

+Orestes P No, what I would do if you had a small SSD, install Motherboard Drivers and other essential drivers your system needs and install Antivirus, Firewall and Mlawarebytes Pro on C:\ drive and then move ProgramsFilesDir to another drive. Hope this helps.

This BREAKS all my program shortcuts, including in my statusbar/quick launc bar and Start Menu! It automatically changes them to the newly pointed default installation location, for all programs, even those that are still located on your C drive...

It has NOT broken ANYTHING, FFS Simply either make new shortcuts by finding the directory the program is in and right clicking on the Executable and then selecting Send to Desktop ( create Shortcut ) , or right click on your existing Shortcut on the desktop and editing the Path to it . BUT since you already have the Program installed there MAY be files and Config stored in your USER'S folder that might also need editing. As I have previously stated , you MUST know EXACTLY what your doing with your PC when doing this and it is best done to a complete Virgin system,

mozzmann I switched my C:// Program Files (and x86) to the F drive (my external hard drive). I had to do this as it was taking up all of my RAM, and thus making things very slow indeed. I copy and pasted another set of Program Files (plus the x86 one) in case something breaks. Nothing is broken yet: but we shall see tomorrow

Well THAT is NOT a smart move for a number of reasons and the primary one is speed of access , External drives should only ever be used for storage !! But if you edited the registry there is no reason why is will not work but it WILL be slow and had better NOT be USB as your USB Driver's WILL NOT load until the OS has done so . . There are some that should NOT own computer's I think .

mozzmann It’s the only move. My PC cannot run with all 800GB being used on the C drive. I’ve had to move it to my external one so I’m able to even use my PC. I haven’t moved the Desktop to another drive like most on here; just my Program Files and Program Files x86. I still have my most important stuff within the Program Files (plus x86) on the C file that doesnt take much space just in case.

Moving the Program Files and X86 folder structure is fine but simply put NOT to and external Drive as this is in a word VERY counterproductive as I said and especially so if it is USB interface , If you happy and as long as you happy with the results and have edited the registry to reflect to alternate location so new installs will know where they are to be , as well as accept the inevitable slow response with data transfer.

Dooooont do the registry EDIT CHANGES!!!!!!!! NEVER EVER CHANGE YOUR C DRIVE WHERE WINDOWS IS INSTALLED. THAT WILL CAUSE WINDOWS TO CORRUPT. AND will probably need to reinstall windows. The first part is okay.

It worked for me you have to transfer the files to the new drive and remake the shortcuts just look for were the file is located when the error message comes up! - People stop freaking out it doesn't break your pc you just don't know how a shortcut works lol
