@@BriTheMathGuy I was struggling the whole week, and thank you very much for your clear explanation it's absolutely clear now. What about if I leave 2 as a coefficient at 5:39 and eliminate 3 to make 0 the underneath? Should the coefficient always be 1?

Well, I came to this video to find the difference between these two algorithms and I must say I did *not* obtain the answer. What is presented in the video are not two different algorithms, but two viewpoints on the same algorithm. You are doing literally the same computations. I think (although I am not sure, I am still looking for some reliable reference) that the point is that you are *never* supposed to normalized the rows. Then it actually becomes different, because in case of Gauss you do the divisions during the back substitution, while with Gauss-Jordan, you do them at the very end. Due to this difference, Gauss uses less operations, while Gauss-Jordan is maybe more numerically stable.

I know right! This basically works because of basic algebraic operations work on equations, and the fact that adding(subtracting) equations is a valid thing to do. The main difference here is we are just doing a shorthand notation by using a matrix. Have a great day!

Thank you for the video, it was incredibly helpful. For Gaussian Elimination, do you always need to have leading 1's in the diagonal? My instructor said that the numbers along the diagonal do not matter as long as whats underneath them are 0's. Is that true? Or is it better to stick with using 1's along the diagonal?

You could do it from top right to bottom left, but the method in this video is the standard (and probably most natural) way to do it. Thanks for watching!
