British Airways BA492 Gibraltar Aborted landing 25th Feb 2019
Film from inside the aircraft from about 7 minutes out of Gibraltar. Starting at 05:30 we hit significant turbulence and the landing was aborted with quite some roll. We landed safely at Malaga 30 mins later.
Mentour Pilot has done a brilliant explanation from the flight crew's perspective here • The "Rocky" Gibraltar ...
Short version of this vid here • British Airways BA492 ...
And here is the safe landing at Malaga • British Airways BA492 ... quite an anti climax after this one.

@Ryan Gross Mentour Pilot said that he thinks the plane was still flying on autopilot. For some reason Airbus autopilot wasn't able to stop the oscillation faster. I guess the oscillation was within safety parameters and autopilot software decided to do nothing but wait.

There was an incident some years ago over the pacific, can't remember the airline but I think it was a Korean 747. At one point it was inverted in a dive and overspeeding - rivets were popping off and firing through the aircraft, yet it landed safely in I THINK KLAX. Aircraft are very very very strong, like, so strong that nothing really will really knock it out of the sky (unless there was something wrong with it or the flight crew mishandle it)

Thomas Müller This doesn’t really stress the airframe......this was just involuntary pitching and rolling. G loads are what stresses an airframe, ie pulling out of a dive too quickly and very steep turns while maintaining height.

As a Human/Plane hybrid, I can expertly say that the issue was that the plane had excess gas, causing bloating and pain in the cargo bay, and the plane was rolling from side to side in order to encourage the gas to be farted out through the APU exhaust.

I was on that filght!. Before embarking we had been told we were going to Malaga due to the wind conditions, but it was announced as we were boarding that the Captain had made the decision to fly to Gibraltar. BA pilots take pride in landing on Gib when others can't. The BA planes earlier in the day and later both landed. Our Captain did say it might be bumpy ahead. In my experience this is normal for Gibraltar. There was a sudden drop in height and roll which caused most people to gasp. Some were alarmed and crying. Even seasoned travellers to Gib hadn't experienced that level of turbulence. After the event, the Captain stated that she hadn't liked that very much, and she would circle around at 9,000 feet whilst she conversed with the control tower, and then later told us that as the wind conditions wouldn't change for another hour she would divert to Malaga. In my opinion, whilst the crew went round to reassure the passengers, they did seem relieved, and a bit anxious - so it was out of the ordinary in that sense. Most seasoned passengers to Gib also thought this pretty unique. Quite a few of us shared the thought that we might be about to die (in the after incident chat, when we had landed)

A lot of people seem to think it’s the pilots flying. This is an Airbus and when you press toga for an aborted landing, the autopilot carries it out and so it was trying to level the plane off as it was affected by rotor turbulence.

Patrick Eruimy Tell me about it.... Generally fun though and adds a bit of excitement to the landing. I’m sure there must be pre-cautionary measures that could be taken (like flares, etc) to identify unusual wind patterns around The Rock when a plane is on approach? Or even wind buffeting measurements around The Rock? Hardly rocket science these days with good prediction modelling.....
@Juraberg
@Juraberg 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, it is definitely a spectacular place. Short term met forecast is excellent nowadays. The problem is the unpredictable wind sheer and turbulance in the final approach. And it is a handicap for pilots as circuit and approach are not ideal because of the border to Spain with a prohibited air space. Interesting, however.

Give her a break guys. They hit severe turbulence on the way in and it looks like the rock produced a rotor effect. There's no way to be able to predict which what effect the rotor will have and I'd like to see anyone else do anything better. There's no question that the aircraft was in the right configuration.....it's what we do all the time. And despite unsettling, passengers are so used to being flown around so the gins don't get spilt you never get to see anything close to aircraft limits. Good job well done, right decision made and most likely the autopilot was in to reduce workload and better manage the wind shear. Enough said.

@joshuam20

Stefan Margraf So it’s caused by the southerly winds over the large rock in Gibraltar causing rotor turbulence where the wind is forced over the top and sort of rotated back round. The autopilot in the Airbus stays on during aborted landing with toga so the autopilot would be attempting to level the plane.

Great video.☺️ I saw this on Mentour Pilots Channel.☺️ It’s not dangerous it’s just “moderate to moderate plus turbulence” as quoted by Mentour Pilot.☺️ The reason why that happened is because of the high pressure winds going over that big rock, that’s why you experienced that. Apparently, that’s normal at that Airport.☺️ I just subscribed to ur channel.☺️ Metour Pilot showed us this video from two angles, one from the inside (this video) and another one from the outside looking up.☺️
@joshuam20
@joshuam20 5 жыл бұрын
Joshua Hall a.k.a. Controlla Yeah you are correct. He explains that the winds being forced over the rock causes rotor turbulence. This causes some rocking and thus the autopilot tried to level leading to a larger rocking motion.

Excellent. Surprised the Captain didn't have another attempt. Was it BA or ZY? That wind is Levante and sometimes creates an updraft off the Rock. In the 'good old days' (up until about 2004), you couldn't divert straight to Malaga. You had to go to Tangier and refuel/fill a new flight plan.

Having been in aviation all my life, I have never seen a recovery take as long as this with the aircraft in constant roll left to right. the wind rolls over those mountains and causes turbulent air. it looks like pilot induced oscillation but its most likely the autopilot correcting and then over correcting causing this undulation. as he draws in line with the mountain ridge the bad air stops and the problem stops.
