At one point it was inverted in a dive and overspeeding - rivets were popping off and firing through the aircraft, yet it landed safely in I THINK KLAX. For decades Gibraltar Airport has been well known for its special exposure to winds around the very close hill ("the Rock"). Difficult for pilots, adventurous for passengers and spectacular for viewers on the ground. ✈️😅👍🏼
@stevies.19755 жыл бұрын
Patrick Eruimy Tell me about it.... Generally fun though and adds a bit of excitement to the landing. I’m sure there must be pre-cautionary measures that could be taken (like flares, etc) to identify unusual wind patterns around The Rock when a plane is on approach? Or even wind buffeting measurements around The Rock? Hardly rocket science these days with good prediction modelling.....
@Juraberg5 жыл бұрын
I agree, it is definitely a spectacular place. Short term met forecast is excellent nowadays. The problem is the unpredictable wind sheer and turbulance in the final approach. And it is a handicap for pilots as circuit and approach are not ideal because of the border to Spain with a prohibited air space. Interesting, however.
@1199SSB5 жыл бұрын
I was on that filght!. Before embarking we had been told we were going to Malaga due to the wind conditions, but it was announced as we were boarding that the Captain had made the decision to fly to Gibraltar. BA pilots take pride in landing on Gib when others can't. The BA planes earlier in the day and later both landed. Our Captain did say it might be bumpy ahead. In my experience this is normal for Gibraltar. There was a sudden drop in height and roll which caused most people to gasp. Some were alarmed and crying. Even seasoned travellers to Gib hadn't experienced that level of turbulence. After the event, the Captain stated that she hadn't liked that very much, and she would circle around at 9,000 feet whilst she conversed with the control tower, and then later told us that as the wind conditions wouldn't change for another hour she would divert to Malaga. In my opinion, whilst the crew went round to reassure the passengers, they did seem relieved, and a bit anxious - so it was out of the ordinary in that sense. Most seasoned passengers to Gib also thought this pretty unique. Quite a few of us shared the thought that we might be about to die (in the after incident chat, when we had landed)
@Mersaul45 жыл бұрын
This was not mere turbulence. I read the bank angle was 45 degrees at one point, which is completely outside of normal flying limits. This is not normal at all and I suspect pilot error in the form of pilot induced oscillations.

Give her a break guys. They hit severe turbulence on the way in and it looks like the rock produced a rotor effect. There's no way to be able to predict which what effect the rotor will have and I'd like to see anyone else do anything better. There's no question that the aircraft was in the right configuration.....it's what we do all the time. And despite unsettling, passengers are so used to being flown around so the gins don't get spilt you never get to see anything close to aircraft limits. Good job well done, right decision made and most likely the autopilot was in to reduce workload and better manage the wind shear. Enough said.

Just imagine if this were an american flight... Rather than the passengers remaining calm, laughing and chatting amongst eachother, they'd be screaming, crying out for jesus, and throwing themselves on the floor hysterically!! You know I'm right.....

Can confirm. When I was flying to Des Moines with American Eagle and we came into pretty harsh turbulences and we were in free fall a couple of times. The whole plane started to scream. I think my row was the only row who remained "calm". I don't know if it's an European thing to stay calm in situations like these or if the other people were too hysterical.

Just a correction on your note of the "spikey things on the tips". Those aren't for lightning, they are for dissipating static build up as the aircraft flies through the air.

Thank you for filming this from inside. Such a pity that you can't see the control surfaces when the wing is going down. This would have helped to understand whether the autopilot overcorrected or if the turbulence really was that bad.

@flywithtb50055 жыл бұрын
@@clough99 Yeah I can imagine that. But now it is not that far away in time. Can you remember whether the control surfaces such as ailerons and spoilers were extended until the wing went up again or did they retract very soon before the wing stopped going down? Greetings, TB500

Well it looks like the problem ended just as they passed the mountainous ridge visible at 7:52. So maybe they flew into turbulence coming off its lee side.

Definitely a mountain wave or rotor, you can also see that the trouble started more or less as they got below the hills.

I wonder if pilot briefed them before.
@C2K7775 жыл бұрын
As @Net said I get the impression that the flightdeck probably briefed pax that it might be a bumpy ride in. In fact the fact that they then said "I think we'll be going to Malaga" pretty much ensures they were advised ahead of time. There's no way for your regular passenger to know where the alternate airport would be. We would need the poster to confirm this of course but it makes sense to me and imho it's a good move by the Captain as it prepares pax for anything that comes and as we heard there was a lot of( perfectly understandable) nervous laughter but practically no screaming aside from a little when the plane 1st started getting hit by the rotor effect winds
@thomas.leitner5 жыл бұрын
Well, passengers are always getting briefed about a possible rocky go-around and diversion. So it's no surprise and well explained here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXPOgJqQhc-NjpY
@clough995 жыл бұрын
We were warned before boarding we could get diverted to Malaga due to the windy conditions. Clearly the captain had updated information and made the decision to attempt the landing . As soon as the turbulence hit she started the rapid climb clear of the bad winds .
