There was an event years ago involving a British unit that got ambushed in Iraq. The proximity was close, and several of the British soldiers immediately counterattacked by going in with bayonets fixed. Stuck a couple insurgents, the rest changed their minds, and it got the unit out of the ambush. Seeing somebody getting run through by something like a bayonet, or being threatened by it is still a shocking effect for morale.

As said in the video, the bayonets were psychological. Like how bullets don't get many kills compared to other forms of offense, they're still useful to have to psych out the enemy. Military goals aren't usually to genocide people, but to capture/liberate objectives. The easiest way to do that is to make the enemy run away

Yup was used even in WW2. In the book by Holger Eckhertz I was just reading has interviews with German soldiers post-Normandy (1950's) and it's stated multiple times how the German units were essentially shitting themselves because the Brits were running in with Bayonets and fighting hand-to-hand, especially in all the small bunkers and defensive trenches. Even the look in the eyes of the British unnerved them, one quote (paraphrasing) was that the Germans "couldn't understand how someone who looked just like they did and were from the same stock/race wanted to kill so badly".

The A2 is a great fun. It was the original that left something to be desired - though even that was a perfectly functioning weapon. Most of the time. I got to fire the semi-automatic 'Cadet' version when I was a teenager. Even that felt like a good gun, even if it was 'well used' and the dampness made the bolt a bit stiff after a while. But my goodness was it accurate on the range.

You'll not be fighting them with bayonet. You'll be firing at indistinct shapes on an opposite mountainside as you constantly second-guess which direction the gunfire is coming from. That's assuming you actually get into a firefight, rather than spend most of your time on a base or on patrol, praying you don't hit an IED or get shot by a sniper.

Ello matey, The L85A2 doesn't ave that much recoil to be honest firing in bursts there is barely any recoil at all. The weapon is a bit heavier then most (negligible talking grams here) but the weight actually lowers the recoil not exaggerates it. The bayonet however lengthens the overall length dissipating the main advantage of the weapon, it being a bullpup. Can i just say, the bullpup and compact design make it outstanding in close quarters.

They charged with bayonets in Helmand province, Afghanistan. They did it again in Basra city, Iraq. Before that, they stabbed, chopped, rifle-butted their way up and down Mt. Tumbledown in the Falklands, and before that in the jungles of Borneo, Malaya, the highlands of Kenya. Every year, every generation, arm chair generals and analysts say the spirit of the bayonet is obsolete. Every war, Tommy Atkins proves them wrong. So long as men attack to take ground there will be a place for the bayonet.
@lindgrenland6 жыл бұрын
It always seemed weird to me with bayonets on bullpup configs. Not the concept of the bayonet itself, but just the way they have to grasp the firearm somewhat awkwardly, and some bullpups do look kinda flimsy. I prefer a trusty, good old 1.5 meter long (or ~60in) musket for my personal bayonet fencing needs!

To assume this is the only training they receive is ignorant. The idea of this particular drill is to develop aggression in the troops and get them used to using the bayonet, rather than to simulate an actual combat environment. Granted charging suicidally across open ground is a thing of the past, but this sort of thing will mean they don't flinch when they actually use a bayonet, like in an enclosed space or something, and get the job done.

Wow, this shows how awkward it is to do bayonet fighting (not that you should need to in today's battlefield) with a bull-pup rifle. As to relevance... the important thing about fighting from a strategic perspective is not about being able to defend yourself. It is about having the best offence. This is embodied in Japanese Kendo and the effectiveness of kamikaze bombers in ww ii. It is also much easier to train a soldier in a single dimension, only to attack and to do the best attack.

I see your point there, but the whole purpose of the bayonet is to thrust hard straight through the ribcage. It would be almost impossible to get under the ribs and up with a bayonet thrust in combat. And whilst I have no experience with the Steyr bayonet, I would be very surprised if you actually managed to snap a blade against it!
@robertchubb15182 жыл бұрын
Erm...TEXTBOOK states the rib cage...the bayonet goes WHEREVER in order to kill, immobilize, destroy, prevent them making a move against you or even make them run....l have heard men involved in this for real saying they put the bayonet through the skull...such is the Adrenalin that one musters...one other stated he put his though a mans eye...the results are obvious Look..the whole point of this viewing IS to try to convey to “the civilian, or average Joe” that these young men although in training may well come up within a situation such as this. The recruits are getting a feeling (in a controlled environment) of what leads upto, being involved, and then the aftermath of such an event. However in reality..the event is both shockingly violent and is a scar on anyone’s moral and sane view (Only Edited because yt like to put/spellcheck words that come from the military but make no sense)

Killing that close isn't pleasant, but Professional Troops are trained and indoctrinated to do it, in stressful situations training and muscle memory kicks in, this kind of training is brutalizing but war is brutal, you don't win by being pleasant. It is however relatively rare, although running out of ammunition is not as rare as you'd think, Afghanistan and Iraq had a lot of engagements where it came down to "Bayonets", as long as you've got strength to wield it you are still a threat.
