The head of the British Army said he felt an "emotional tug" seeing footage of a destroyed UK Challenger 2 burning in Ukraine - the first lost to enemy action.
Chief of the General Staff General Sir Patrick Sanders said it's likely he has been on board that tank and said soldiers have a "deep affection" for the vehicles and equipment they operate.
The 62.5-tonne tank, one of fourteen given to Ukraine by the UK, was earlier this week hit by a mine before being struck by a Russian suicide drone, Western officials said.
All crew members survived, with Gen Sir Patrick hailing the Challenger 2 as the best-protected tank in the world.

Well said. I'd add that any war the west has fought is vastly different to how Ukraine has had to fight this war. Western forces would have first gained air superiority to ensure the skies are uncontested, followed by weeks of bombing which would limit the opponents ability to lay mines, followed by a ground assault. That didn't happen in Ukraine due to its limited Soviet equipment, so tanks face a much more dangerous set of circumstances in Ukraine.

Hatches are CLOSED! Watch the videos! There is even a drone aerial footage, the hatches are CLOSED. That means they never got a chance to abandon. It also means that this "military" guy is full of it. The Head of the British Army doesn´t know to look at the hatches before claiming they survived?? Kinda suspicious, no? Or could it be he knows the truth, but he´s just spreading the "narrative" coming from Kiev, no matter how daft? Even more suspicious is that they think the british audience is so numb to believe it, even though everyone has seen the video by now! So they know they can lie all they want, that your average brit is so clueless, that they won´t even notice the hatches are closed!

@@jjw2520 the fact all crew survived means not a single penetration happened. My point is that even if you don't want to say the armor is better, the fact is the weaponry being used against it was clearly not enough (btw the Bradley who "destroyed" the tank was lost trying to do it again the next day), the only weaponry that could have damaged the tank was the rpgs, which probably is what happened. One made the turret spin, other made the crew bail, after the Commander stopped the turret since he still had control and could override it Unless if it was destroyed by a drone drop, it will probably be recovered as lines move up if wasnt already

At that rate they will soon reach 1 artillery shell per each citizen of Ukraine(that is including 1 day old children). And artillery is what hit that Challenger, so there is that. Interestingly enough, russians used "Kornet" missile afterwards to make an impression that "Kornet" missile was the reason of destruction of the Challenger. Even dumbest weapon used in huge quantities is a force of mass destruction. West made a mistake by providing efficient weapon to Ukraine so late, but it is better late than never. If we were given F-16s before summer 2023, counteroffensive would be way more successful and with far less casualties on Ukrainian side. Each day without new modern weapon support for Ukraine is a day when russians can improve defensive positions of the occupied territories.

the tank could catch fire. If the crew managed to pull the fire extinguisher bracket before jumping out, the flame quickly extinguished, and the insides of the car did not burn out completely. If this was not done, then the tank burned out from the inside to the ground; from the terrible heat, the armor was "released", lost hardening, and it was already impossible to restore the car. After the repair was completed, the tank's fighting compartment was repainted, but, despite this, sometimes the smell of death permeated the entire car. Then the new crews were afraid to take the tank allocated to them, superstitiously fearing to share the fate of the comrades who died in it.

If I took a challenger and shelled it with an artillery barrage im pretty sure the results would be the same if it were a leopard or abrams or anything else. In war, you lose stuff. A Challenger tank is however one of the more superior tanks, it ain't as good as Leopard 2 but extremely close from what I heard but then again Leopard 2 is better than any Russian tank despite its age so as far as tanks go Challenger is a dream to have defending you compared to the Russian tanks. No matter how good the tank, its going to go down, either because of mines, drones, arty, precision arty, javelins and such, etc. but if any Russians find themselves in combat against a Challenger, they better say a prayer before the sendoff

That term at the end "combined arms" that includes air power whilst the Ukrainians still don't have any modern fighter jets, and they are expecting to only get about 60 f16 fighters. So basically combined arms without air power. I'm going to guess you do need air power in order to do combined arms, thats why the UK and all NATO member each have an air force, and use their air force when they are at war. We really do need to get more modern fighter jets to Ukraine.

It's 73 F-16s now, Norway is sending 12. It takes time to introduce something as complex as a modern fighter to a military like is being attempted by Ukraine. And the UK led the way by being the first western nation to start training Ukrainian pilots in western aircraft. Just like it was the UK that opened the door to thousands of Ukrainian recruits being trained there. It was also the first nation that committed to sending MBTs and sent the first long range cruise missiles that have proved invaluable. All while the nation with the largest nuclear weapons arsenal on the planet keeps rumbling about using it on anyone who aids Ukraine. Going as far as producing on its state media videos of the UK being wiped out by massive new Russian nuclear weapons systems. Talk about stiff upper lip, the UK has proven once again the quality of its people, its government and its military.

We organized the first collection point of emergency vehicles (SPAM) on the southern slope of the same hill, near the road passing through Erel in the direction of the Saint-Jean-de-Deux highway. By 9.00, tow trucks T2 repairmen of the 33rd regiment began to bring the first tanks, hit at the beginning of the battle. The first victim was an M4 medium tank, while the body of one of the tankers remained inside. According to the surviving crew members, they were hit on the highway. The German gunners, apparently, did not shoot until the tank approached them literally fifty meters away, after which they put two 75‑mm armor-piercing shells from the PAK 41 anti-tank gun into the tank. It was almost impossible to notice such a squat cannon until you hit it… The first shell killed the M4 drive shaft, immobilizing the tank. The second struck tangentially into the frontal armor of the tower above the shooter's head, killing him on the spot. Avoiding looking at the body in the tower, I climbed up on it to assess the damage caused to the tank. The second shell hit the tower at the top of a large curvature, where the thickness of the armor ranged from 63 to 88 millimeters, and the angle of incidence of the projectile on the armor was no more than 15 °. In officer courses, we were taught that the critical angle is 38°, if it is lower, the projectile usually ricochets. This was especially true in relation to the shells of the American M2 tank guns, with their low initial velocity. After examining the frontal part of the tank, I found that the first shell hit the main gear - a heavy armored box containing a transmission and a differential connected to the tracks. The projectile hit directly into the top of the main transmission box at the point where the armor thickness was maximum, amounting to approximately 115 millimeters. He penetrated the armor, passed through a 30‑centimeter layer of engine oil (the viscosity value of which was 50), cut through a 140-millimeter thick steel driveshaft, then passed through another 20 or 25 centimeters of engine oil and pierced the 25‑millimeter armor plate protecting the tank driver's compartment from behind. By this time, he had lost all punching power and buried himself in the floor under the seat - between the driver's legs. Since the shell was armor-piercing, it didn't even explode. As for the second projectile, although it ricocheted, the force of its impact was enough to break a gap in the armor seven centimeters wide and about twenty-five long. The shooter was killed by an explosive wave that passed right through his viewing slot. It became clear that it would not be possible to repair the tank in the field - it was necessary to sharpen new supports. The car had to be dragged to the repair company.

"Let me explain why I believe he’s lying, because it gets to the heart of the topic. The footage of the actual Challenger kill was released, and was purportedly done by a Kornet ATGM, which created a large explosion. The important thing that people have pointed out, is if you look at the photos of the killed tank, it appears that the turret has actually been completely detached from the hull and is sitting on the edge of the side in a way it’s not supposed to be. Note how the front of the turret sits roughly flush with the side of the tank when it’s turned, and the rear of the turret which houses the ammo hangs over the other side, on a properly fitted tank. But in the destruction footage, we see that the front of the turret is actually hanging over the side and the rear is flush. The destroyed Challenger hit a mine, lost a track, and the crew got out. After that, some Ruzzian sources say, she was hit by a Ruzzian 9M133 "Kornet" ATGM. Obviously to deny recovery by Ukraine. Kornets are one of the most capable ATGM that the Ruzzians have, having been used in the Iraqi War, where they disabled a couple of Abrams, and in the 2006 Lebanon War, were they are credited with destroying 4 Israeli Merkava's. Losing a MBT like the Challenger is a shame, but, the important thing is that the crew survived. That is more critical than anything else in battle.

@JK-dv3qe it matters because you'd expect a British army chief to know precisely which anti-tank missiles we've provided. Especially the NLAW as its final assembly was in UK following joint work between UK and Sweden. It matters. Javeline is a US product by Lockheed Martin which works completely differently and is a lot more expensive.

What gets me is how you Russian trolls start downing around because you are soooo SURPRISED you actually destroyed a tank. There have been some comments questioning whether tanks are still important / effective. I don't agree with the rationale or argument, namely that tanks have had there day. Inevitably the prime military asset on the battlefield is going to be targeted. If you take tanks out of the equation (remove them from the battlefield) then it will simply be the next primary vehicle on the battlefield that will become the focus of attention (and thus you end up with the same argument being used in respect of that type of military vehicle, and so on and so on until you are left with bicycles. If anything there may need to be an analyse of the tactics as to how tanks are used. My gut reaction would be to deploy a couple or three of them in mixed groupings with other vehicles (such as alongside Ukrainian tanks and IFV in a main grouping. The main body (of mixed vehicles) would be supported in its left and right flanks by two or three tanks which would act as QRF in the event that the main contingent is engaged. An alternative approach, would be to address specific assets being targeted by just increasing the weight of numbers of tanks. Big groupings of tanks (playing the numbers game - yes anti tank teams are likely to inflict damage but it would be short lived!) I think either approaches would still require adaption of tactics, such as much closer working with drones and much closer working with the infantry or dedicated anti-tank teams. American tactics involves deploying tanks only with dedicated tank infantry (tank scouts) . Alternatively I quite like the idea of using the German Weasels as an advance formation. The weasels are light small tanks that are very nimble and quiet and apparently are very effective in the anti-tank role (presumably they could double up providing recconiaisence.
